Chapter 70: Echoes of Disaster (1)

[—:Warning! Warning! Warning!:—]

[Apocalypse Descent Imminent]

[City: Lorsine]

[Two Hours to Descent]

[1:59]

It was the first time Ark had ever seen this screen and yet he knew exactly what it was, very soon the city would become a war front.

The three of them hurried into the car, and the engine roared to life as Kiera quickly pulled into the street, stepping on the gas.

She reached into her dashboard, pulled out her phone and quickly dialed Thalia’s number before handing the phone to Ark.

Ring Ring

Thalia answered the phone immediately.

"Get back immediately or we’ll leave without you."

That was all she said before she hung up, no doubt trying to get everything in order. Fourth squad was in charge of the resident military unit in Lorsine, she would no doubt be mobilizing them that very moment.

Before Ark could even place the phone down, it buzzed to life a warning message appearing on the screen.

[Apocalypse Decent Imminent]

[All citizens are to find their way to nearby shelters. Secure your homes if you are unable to make it to a shelter]

"I never thought we would experience one this early." Emma said from the back, a troubled expression on her face.

"We haven’t even visited the second realm yet."

She was right, currently they were even worse than mediocre curse bearers in terms of training. Normally, a curse bearer would visit the second realm to get experience with battling beasts as well as to boost their core capacity.

They had not experienced any of that and their core capacities were relatively low. If they were to be tossed into the apocalypse this way...

Ark didn’t want to think about how it would go.

Immediately after they arrived at the house they hurried inside and right into the dining where everyone else was gathered, staring at a large television that was now active.

The news was already live, reporters who had been tipped off by curse bearers were already announcing the situation to the general populace.

Within ten the ten minutes it took to get here the city had turned to shit. There were gridlocks at all major streets leading out of the city, people were already looting shops and slowly overwhelming the resident security.

Ark frowned as turned to face them.

Only Thalia and Natasha were missing so he stared at Vivian.

"Where is Thalia?"

The woman then turned away from the screen to face him.

"She’s at the military base, she’ll be back in an hour. Our orders are to get ready for battle."

"Battle?" Elise asked, staring at Vivian.

Vivian didn’t meet her gaze, staring at the television instead, but Elise continued.

"They are complete noobs, they haven’t even visited the second realm? Well trained curse bearers die in these kinds of situations, what chance do they have?"

An uncomfortable silence settled in the room before Luke spoke:

"You aren’t wrong Elise, but we can just sit back and watch the city burn."

Elsie frowned but she knew he was right.

Emma pulled out a chair and sat down next to her before speaking.

"What about the commander?"

Vivian shook her head. "The commander along with the rest of the squad are in the midst of another apocalypse descent, a joint operation in another city."

She placed her hand on her face and sighed.

"Thalia is trying to contact him but there is not much hope on that front."

There was no way around it, they had no choice but to partake in the operation. Even if Thalia wanted them to stay back it would be impossible to make that decision because she would be risking the life of thousands of people in the process.

With nothing left to do, Ark walked over to the fridge and pulled out a bottle of yoghurt, popped off the lid and downed the entire liquid.

It was going to be a rough couple of weeks.

***

True to time, just at the one hour mark an obnoxiously large horn blared from outside the compound and then the front door was practically kicked open.

Thalia walked into the room, wearing a grey sleeveless shirt and camo trousers.

"Let’s move!"

Her normally playful expression was gone and replaced by one worthy of a vice captain.

They immediately rose to their feet and exited the building, just before he left, when he was sure Thalia wasn’t looking. Ark quickly grabbed another bottle before hurrying outside.

In front of their street was a large modern military truck and surrounding these trucks were smaller military vehicles that were loaded with heavily armed military personnel.

Thalia led them into the largest one.

Ark thought he would be greeted by just a slightly better version of what a bus interior looked like but was pleasantly shocked.

The interior was nothing like that of any regular vehicle he had seen. Single comfy chairs were arranged at opposite sides of the vehicle, seats that could rotate 360°.

There was a seat in the Center of the cabin, most likely the captain’s seat judging by its position, there were two driver seats with a slightly more complex panel and to Ark’s surprise, Natasha was manning the wheel.

There was also a mini kitchen, toilet and a few other quality of life improvements.

Thalia walked over to her seat and sat cross-legged facing the screen that showed the outside of the vehicle.

"Full speed ahead, we are paying the Wielder’s Center a visit."

There was the sound of screeching tyres as the multiple military vehicles roared to life, dominating the streets.

It was a scene straight out of an Independence Day parade, a full show of military power.

Countless of the vehicles, including their own, had triple barrel torrents on their roofs, no doubt to shred through monsters they would encounter on the roads when the apocalypse began. 𝗳𝚛𝗲𝕖𝕨𝕖𝗯𝚗𝚘𝕧𝕖𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝕞

Thalia picked up a manual from her seat and tossed it to Luke.

"Memorise it, it is the torrent control manual."

She turned to face Kiera and Emma. "You both will handle rear defence in the event that we get surrounded. But for now, Kiera will be the backup driver."

Kiera nodded and walked over to join Natasha.

"Elise and Ark, you both will be our vanguard, if the road needs clearing you will both handle it."

Ark wanted to frown but just remained. The vanguard was by far the most difficult job among all of them.

Not only would they be leaving the safety of the bus, they would also have to confront the beasts face to face.

"I’m guessing this means we aren’t getting any help from the commander?"

Thalia’s eyes twitched slightly.

"We are on our own, me, Vivian and a band of rookies."

Vivian sighed from her seat.

"May God help us all."
