Chapter 738: 737 on the edge of life and death

“Felix.”

“Felix!”

“Calm down, first tell me what happened?”

Li Wei quickly seized control of the situation with an emergency break.

But on the other end of the phone, Felix was plunged into deep helplessness.

“I don’t know, I just… I’m right at the corner of Hudson Street and Canal Street. I, I might need a little help.”

...

Wait, that was only two blocks away from Li Wei’s apartment. Could it be that Felix was coming to find him? Was this the reason Felix had called him?

Without hesitation, Li Wei said directly, “Felix, stay where you are and wait for me.”

He hung up the phone and dashed out, racing through the hallway to leave his apartment.

The apartment was noisy with the merry atmosphere of the game about to start, and only Mahomes noticed Li Wei’s figure, but before he could react, Li Wei was gone, leaving him looking around in bewilderment, only to find no one else noticed anything amiss.

Kelsey was an exception; he noticed too, but he looked at Mahomes, puzzled, and shrugged to show he had no idea what was going on.

Thud, thud, thud; thud, thud, thud.

A frantic run.

Li Wei sprinted through the howling wind and as he approached the street corner, he saw the car from afar, skewed awkwardly on the shoulder, avoiding the main road, not affecting traffic, but clearly out of place.

The situation was grim.

Li Wei’s heart pounded uncontrollably, the short distance fuelled by a surge of energy in his blood amidst the tension and unease.

“Felix.”

Li Wei pounded forcefully on the driver’s side window, trying to wake Felix, who lay slumped over the steering wheel.

“Felix!”

The car door, opened.

Li Wei grabbed the handle fiercely and yanked the door open, quickly scanning the situation. Felix was drenched in sweat as if he had been fished out of water, his pale cheeks marked with an unnatural redness that contrasted starkly against the deathly pale of his lips, the whole scene bleak and gray.

“Felix, talk to me, what’s going on? What’s wrong with you?”

Felix lifted his head, his eyes, red and pained, looked at Li Wei in despair, not saying a word but just lifting his shirt to reveal a wound on his abdomen.

Li Wei had no understanding of cancer treatments; the wound looked like it might be from a treatment or surgery, neatly dressed, but the skin around the dressing had a waxen yellow pallor with a touch of gray and a dark red, which even someone with no medical knowledge could tell was not right.

“Felix, the wound is infected; we need to call for help…”

Felix shook his head repeatedly, “No, no, no, don’t…”

Vomit.

Before he could finish speaking, Felix began to throw up, spewing out a thick, murky green liquid that spilled onto his clothes, as if his very insides were being expelled.

Vomit.

Felix, struggling, looked at Li Wei, pleading desperately, “Don’t call 911, no… don’t call my mom, please… Li Wei, I beg you…”

Li Wei stood there, stunned, his fingers poised on his phone, ready to dial, stopped, “Felix, what happened?”

Felix, limp with weakness, slumped over the steering wheel and turned to look at Li Wei, “I, I just wanted to deliver the jerseys Annie and the others had made for you.”

“They hand-painted them, spending the entire afternoon. Every one of us was involved, not just for you, but for others as well.”

“We… we wanted to cheer you on…”

“But… I couldn’t… I don’t know what happened… I’m useless, I’m really so useless…”

“I beg you, don’t tell my mom. I just wanted to prove I’m not worthless, that I can do this on my own, that I don’t need my mom for everything, if she knew…”

“If I get put into the ICU, I won’t be able to go to Arrowhead Stadium to watch the game, Li Wei, I beg you, please…”

Words, fragmented and disjointed.

Felix’s face was flushed, his breath thin as gossamer, his entire body drenched in sweat, as if one could clearly see his vitality ebbing away gradually.

Tears. Mucus. Saliva. Vomit.

All mixed together, his eyes bloodshot, Felix looked at Li Wei in despair and agony.

Li Wei shook his head, took a deep breath, “Felix, we need to call 911.”

Felix, “No!”

Li Wei, “I have to do this.”

Felix howled in despair, “No…”

But Li Wei had already turned, pulled out his phone, “911, I need an ambulance at the corner of Hudson Street and Canal Street, my name is Li Wei, my friend is in critical condition, please hurry, okay?”

Felix pounded the steering wheel heavily, “I hate myself… ah… ahhhh…”

One blow, then another, he used all his strength, but couldn’t kill even a mosquito.

Li Wei hung up the phone, looking at Felix, who was in a struggle of agony—

This was the first time.

Since knowing Felix, this was the first time Li Wei saw his other side, not always smiling, not always bright-eyed, not always full of confidence, but as a child, not yet an adult, having to face his own death, stealing every day from the clutches of the Grim Reaper.

Felix wanted to always stay humorous, keep his courage, and face death positively and brightly, showing his calm and composed manner until the very last moment, but… reality was not like that.

Although everyone knew how terrible cancer was, only those friends and relatives truly by the patient’s side could understand the ferocity and horror of the disease.

It would seep into life little by little, then make oneself and everyone around become unrecognizably transformed, helplessly plummeting into despair.

All that soul-soothing talk was nonsense.

The ambulance finally arrived, and the paramedics recognized Li Wei immediately, but there was no time for excitement, they showed their professionalism, lifted Felix out of the driver’s seat, onto the ambulance, and started treating his wounds and administering fluids to Felix right away.

Li Wei got on too.

Watching Felix, who lay on the hospital bed, his consciousness foggy, Li Wei swallowed all the words in his throat, not knowing what to say.

Hang in there? Fight? Hold on a little longer?

At this moment, such words seemed so hypocritical, so lightweight, devoid of any strength.

Standing in front of birth, aging, sickness, and death, humans seemed so powerless and so insignificant.

“Eh… ah…”

“It hurts so much. Wuu… I, I really hurt, I’m sorry… I’m sorry…”

That forever sunny and brave Felix, at this moment, had tears sliding down from his eyes, whimpering softly, his will blurred.

He clenched his teeth, he tried his best, but he couldn’t keep standing tall.

“Mom, it really hurts…”

This was too cruel.

Li Wei couldn’t imagine what Felix was going through, and even more so, couldn’t imagine what Karen had endured over the years.

Death, more tangible than ever before, he felt as though he could see the Grim Reaper standing at the foot of the bed, overlooking their pitiful struggle.

Taking a deep breath, Li Wei barely regained his composure.

“It’s okay, it’s okay, Felix.”

“There’s no need to apologize, you did well, you’re doing well now. You know, I finally understand why you’re a true Chieftain, so brave, and so strong. Just hold on a bit longer, just a bit more.”

“God, imagine how happy and overjoyed the players are when they see the jerseys you’ve prepared for them, we always admire your courage…”
