Don't Want to Be Ordinary Even Though I'm an Extra Character-Chapter 49: [48] A Resolute Stand
-Rainer Astoria-
I slowly opened my eyes, the blurry vision before me gradually sharpening. The ground beneath me trembled violently, accompanied by deafening roars that reverberated throughout the cavern.
I struggled to my feet, every movement weighed down by an invisible burden. Small rocks fell from the ceiling like a rain of rubble, the dust choking the air and making it heavy.
As I scanned my surroundings, my gaze finally landed on a figure lying motionless not far from me.
Clara.
Her body was lifeless on the floor, blood dried around the wound that had ended her. The face that had once been so gentle, so warm, now seemed hollow, devoid of the brightness it had carried.
"It’s true... Clara..."
I let out a long, shaky breath, my emotions swirling in a storm of anger, sadness, and confusion. This girl—once a source of inspiration for the villagers and a beacon of hope—had been the mastermind behind all of this destruction.
But regret wouldn’t bring her back. It wouldn’t fix what had been broken.
The ground quaked even harder, shaking me out of my thoughts. I needed to move. If I stayed here any longer, I would meet the same fate as Clara.
I turned toward a rope hanging near one of the cavern walls. Each step toward it felt heavier, as if an unseen force was pulling me back. My body screamed with exhaustion; every minor wound felt like a dagger piercing my flesh.
"No. I don’t have time for this," I muttered through clenched teeth.
Raising a hand, I tapped into the power surging deep within me, the one thing I still had left to rely on.
Force.
The energy coursing through me wasn’t much, but it would have to suffice.
Force: a supernatural strength that allowed warriors to push beyond the boundaries of human capability. Only a small fraction of the population—three in ten warriors—could wield it. I could, thanks to my family’s noble lineage. While I’d never excelled at mastering its full potential, now wasn’t the time for doubt.
"This is going to hurt," I muttered, bracing myself.
I surged upward, my body propelled by a sharp burst of energy. Pain seared through every muscle, a brutal reminder of how far I was pushing myself. But I didn’t care. The adrenaline pounding in my veins drowned out everything else.
When I finally landed on the cavern’s upper ledge, the cold night air washed over me, soothing in its contrast to the stifling chaos I had just escaped.
I gasped for breath, savoring a moment of relief—until a thunderous roar shattered it.
Whipping my head around, my blood ran cold.
Not far from where I stood, the centipede loomed. Its massive body, now glowing with an eerie crimson light, writhed as though channeling the life force it had stolen from the village. Each movement shook the earth beneath its weight, its power more terrifying than before.
And in front of the beast...
Him.
There he stood—Arkan.
A man I had dismissed as a mere tinkerer, someone who just patched things together with odd scraps and riddled every conversation with dry humor. But now, bloodied and battered, he faced the monstrosity head-on. His hand hung limply, likely broken, and blood trickled down his face, yet he stood tall.
"Arkan...?"
My voice trembled, caught between disbelief and awe.
His eyes met the beast’s glowing red ones with a ferocity I had never imagined possible. There was no fear in him, only an unshakable resolve that seemed almost unreal.
His eyes...
Those eyes...
They burned with an intensity I couldn’t describe, filled with determination as vast as the skies. Despite his fragile appearance, those eyes conveyed one simple truth: he would not give up. 𝘧𝓇ℯℯ𝑤ℯ𝘣𝓃ℴ𝓋𝑒𝑙.𝑐𝘰𝑚
No matter how hopeless the fight seemed. No matter how broken he was.
I swallowed hard, the weight of his resolve cutting deeper than any physical wound.
This... This is what a true warrior looks like.
And then, I glanced at my own reflection in the blade of my sword—the weapon I had clutched yet never swung, held yet never wielded when it truly mattered.
My lips curled into a bitter smile.
"Ah... so that’s how it is."
Tightening my grip on my sword, I finally felt the embers of something rekindling deep inside me—a faint light amidst the suffocating darkness.
"I’ve been a coward all this time."
-Arkan Lawrence-
Pain.
My body felt like it was shattering into a thousand pieces. Every breath I took pressed against my chest with an unbearable force, making it harder to move.
I stood on trembling legs, the small dagger in my hand feeling like a child’s toy. In front of me, the massive centipede roared once more, crimson light dripping like blood from the cracks in its armor-like scales.
"Why... Why am I still here?" I thought.
I didn’t understand why I was doing this—standing against a supernatural monster with a body this broken. What was I expecting to achieve?
"Just give up, Arkan..." I whispered to myself.
But the thought refused to settle.
I knew, deep down, that if I gave up now, I wouldn’t just die—everyone would. Rainer, the village, and every soul who depended on this moment... they would all be gone.
I couldn’t die.
Not yet.
"Dammit... I don’t want to die..." I growled, forcing the words out even as my body began to crumble under the weight of its injuries.
The centipede lunged again, its massive maw opening wide, ready to consume me in a single strike.
"Come on, you stupid monster!" I screamed, forcing myself to move forward, even as each step felt like a hammer striking my bones.
I dove to the side, narrowly dodging its devastating bite. But the beast’s massive tail lashed out, slamming into me with brutal force.
I was sent flying across the battlefield, my body crashing into the ground and skidding to a stop.
"Ugh..." Blood trickled from my mouth as my body protested even the slightest movement. My vision blurred as the pain threatened to pull me into unconsciousness.
Then, I heard it—a voice breaking through the chaos.
"Arkan!"
I lifted my head, and there he stood.
Rainer.
His figure seemed almost radiant, his sword faintly glowing with the subtle yet unmistakable energy of Force. His stance was firm and unwavering, though his expression carried shadows of uncertainty.
But there was something different in his eyes—something I hadn’t seen before.
Hope.
-Third-Person Perspective-
Harnessing the Force within him, Rainer delivered a crushing blow to the giant centipede’s massive body, sending the beast hurtling away from Arkan, who lay unconscious and face down on the ground.
It seemed that Arkan had reached his limit. After seeing Rainer arrive, the tension that had held his nerves taut finally relaxed, causing him to collapse into unconsciousness.
Seeing Arkan in such a state, Rainer felt a pang of guilt. But there was no time to tend to him now.
His priority was to kill this monster once and for all.
This was the moment he had waited for—an opportunity to redeem himself, to ensure he would never experience the same failure twice.
Rainer gripped his sword with both hands, the Force coursing through his body, causing the blade to shimmer faintly in the oppressive darkness. Even the air around him seemed to shift, resonating with the power he exuded.
He cast a glance at Arkan, lying face down and barely breathing.
"Wait there, Arkan. I’ll finish this," he muttered, his resolve as firm as steel.
Turning his gaze back to the giant centipede, which slowly rose again despite its injuries, Rainer braced himself. Its massive body writhed with fury, the cracks in its hardened shell dripping thick green blood. Yet its glowing red eyes still burned with hatred.
The beast let out a roar that shook the ground, a declaration of its wrath.
Rainer stepped forward, each movement deliberate and heavy with intent. His aura grew stronger with every step, and his blade gleamed brighter, as though it too shared his determination.
Then, the centipede attacked.
Its colossal jaws opened wide, lunging straight for him with terrifying speed.
Rainer leaped to the side, his movements swift as the wind, leaving only a cloud of dust in his wake. The monster’s bite struck the earth, gouging out a small crater in the spot where he had stood moments before.
"You’re too slow," Rainer said coldly, his voice steady and sharp.
Using the opening, he dashed toward the beast’s side, channeling the Force into his blade. With a powerful swing, he slashed through one of its many legs.
The strike was swift, slicing clean through with the force of lightning.
Green blood gushed from the wound, and the centipede let out a shriek of pain, its massive body writhing violently.
But Rainer knew better than to think it was over.
The monster retaliated, whipping its colossal tail toward him with the speed of a giant whip.
Rainer raised his sword to block, the Force reinforcing his body to withstand the oncoming impact.
BANG!
The collision echoed like thunder, and Rainer was pushed back several meters, his boots digging furrows into the ground to hold his stance.
"If I don’t go all out now, I won’t get another chance," he muttered through ragged breaths, his muscles aching from the strain.
He focused the entirety of his Force energy into his sword, the blade now glowing even brighter. With a deep breath, he launched himself forward, moving faster than the naked eye could follow.
This time, he aimed for the head.
Swinging with everything he had, he tried to pierce the centipede’s glowing red eyes. The creature, however, snapped its jaws shut to defend itself, its razor-sharp teeth narrowly missing Rainer’s body.
Forced to retreat, Rainer took a step back, assessing his opponent.
"This thing is massive. Its attacks are strong, but its movements are predictable. I need to exploit that weakness," he murmured, his mind racing to devise a plan.
Rainer began to move, circling the creature in search of an opening. Dust swirled around his feet with every step as he evaded the centipede’s wild, desperate attacks.
Finally, he saw it: an unarmored spot beneath its massive body. The soft, exposed underside.
"There! That’s your weakness!" Rainer shouted, leaping into the air with Force-enhanced speed.
He slashed downward with every ounce of strength he could muster, driving his blade deep into the vulnerable area.
The monster let out a bone-chilling scream, its body thrashing violently as green blood gushed out in a flood.
Rainer didn’t let up.
He yanked his sword free, ignoring the blood splattering across his face and armor, and retreated just long enough to prepare his next move.
"I can’t stop now. One final strike..."
Positioning himself, Rainer funneled every remaining shred of Force energy into his body. His aura surged with newfound intensity, enveloping him in a radiant glow.
"This ends now!"
With a determined cry, he leaped onto the centipede’s head, dodging its flailing limbs, and drove his glowing sword directly into the core of its skull.
The blade pierced through with a deafening crack, shattering the creature’s glowing red eye and driving deep into its brain.
For a moment, silence hung in the air.
Then, the massive centipede let out one final, pitiful screech before collapsing to the ground with a thunderous crash.
The earth trembled, and a cloud of dust rose, signaling the end of the battle.
Rainer stood atop the now lifeless creature, his body shaking from exhaustion. His armor was stained green, and his sword was chipped and dull.
But he had won.
"It’s over," Rainer said softly, his voice hoarse but steady.
He sheathed his battered sword and carefully descended from the creature’s head. As he approached Arkan, still unconscious on the ground, a pang of guilt welled up in his chest.
Rainer knelt beside him, gently lifting his ally into his arms. "Arkan... I owe you my life."
With staggering steps, Rainer began carrying them both away from the battlefield, leaving the dead monster behind amidst the rubble.
