Chapter 672: Chapter 671: Accident

Wen Congrui held a flower lantern in his hand, somewhat absent-minded. He had thought Wufu was in the tavern but found he had stepped into empty space.

He looked up and out, but his gaze suddenly sharpened, he stepped forward and looked at a boat on the river.

On the deck, a man and a woman were looking at each other and laughing, their smiles pure and at ease, utterly sincere, without a trace of falsity or pretense.

Wen Congrui’s grip tightened slightly.

The people on the boat seemed to notice his gaze, looked over, and nodded at him.

"Who are you waving to?" Wufu saw Ah Jiu’s expression and couldn’t help but turn to look. There were so many people coming and going on the street that it was hard to tell who he had seen.

Ah Jiu laughed, "I just happened to see Lord Wen, that’s all."

"Really?" Wufu looked around, "I can’t see him."

"He’s probably gone by now. With Lantern Festival celebrations everywhere, crowds are dense, and chaos can easily ensue. It’s not strange for him to come out on patrol," Ah Jiu said with a smile.

Before Wufu could respond, a loud bang echoed from afar, as if something had collapsed, followed by a clamor.

"Someone fell into the water!"

"The lantern pavilion collapsed."

"My child, my child is missing."

Cries and screams pierced the night sky of the Lantern Festival, making the otherwise harmonious and beautiful night somewhat eerie and restless.

Wufu sprang up and indeed saw people plunging into the water not far ahead, and some boats on the river had already sent people with rescue nets to help.

"We need to get to shore," Wufu said with a frown.

On the bank, a family’s lantern pavilion had collapsed. People were running away, pushing and shoving, and the cries were deafening.

"Get to shore!" Ah Jiu immediately commanded.

This path was not a dock meant for mooring, but it was easy enough to get to the edge. With a light tap of her toe, Wufu leapt ashore, followed closely by Ah Jiu.

Wufu glanced at the running, crying people above and said to Ah Jiu, "Let’s call it a night. Why don’t you go back first?"

"Where are you going?"

"This is near the city river. I need to check on the tavern, and besides, my mother went out to watch the lanterns as well. I need to make sure she’s safe," Wufu said.

Ah Jiu immediately responded, "I’ll come with you."

In the midst of their conversation, Yuan Ye and the others had already stood beside them.

Feeling a warmth in her heart, Wufu nodded, said let’s go, and headed towards her family’s tavern.

Ah Jiu closely followed by her side, protecting her as they moved forward, while Yuan Ye and a few others spread out, encircling the two to avoid the colliding crowds.

Seeing the panic in the people, Wufu looked towards the area where a fire had started and frowned; indeed, places with heavy crowds were prone to accidents.

They quickly returned to the tavern, which was also packed with people. Yuan Ye and Xiao Li made way, and Wufu entered.

"Host, you’re back!" Manager Zhong was sweating profusely.

"Give me a status update."

"I’ve heard that a lantern pavilion collapsed and a child is missing. Some people ran into the tavern for refuge. I took the liberty of letting them in," Manager Zhong reported.

Wufu glanced at the crowded hall, children crying, and women soothing them in soft voices, and her brow furrowed.

"Let them stay for now," Wufu approached the counter, "Have the staff serve some tea, and if anyone is injured, give them some care."

"Yes!" Manager Zhong went off to make arrangements.

Liu Jin ran down from upstairs and said upon seeing Wufu, "Miss."

"Are there people upstairs too?" Wufu glanced towards the private rooms above.

"No, there are only a few tables of guests. Manager Zhong said not to let people go upstairs to disturb the guests," Liu Jin answered.

Wufu nodded, that was correct; she was kindhearted, but guests came to spend money, and she needed to ensure their safety before anything else.
