Wufu made sure the restaurant wasn’t in complete chaos before he planned to leave, only to be stopped by Ah Jiu. frёewebηovel.cѳm
"Where are you going? It’s a mess out there."
"I have to find my mother, I have no idea where she’s watching the lanterns." Wufu said, frowning.
"The city is so big, where will you start looking?" Ah Jiu said, "The trouble is likely just on this street, isn’t Jadeite with your mother? That girl will protect her and take her to a safe place."
Wufu’s brows knitted together.
"Wait here, I’ll send Xiao Li to your house to check if they’ve returned. If not, we’ll send someone out to look for them." Ah Jiu added.
Wufu fell silent, and Ah Jiu didn’t give him time to think it over, immediately calling for Xiao Li and giving him instructions, and Xiao Li went on his way.
Ah Jiu then had Yuan Ye bring some people to help maintain order in the restaurant, while on the other hand, he had Su Luo go to the streets to see how the situation was.
Seeing this, Wufu had no choice but to accept this kindness.
An hour later, Su Luo returned to report that the lantern pavilion at Pearl Tower had collapsed. Just so happened that the County Magistrate was patrolling the city, and he immediately called the Yamen Guards to maintain order. Additionally, a few children had gone missing, and now that street had already been cleared of people.
"If it’s safe now, let those downstairs disperse as well." Ah Jiu immediately ordered.
Su Luo saluted and went downstairs to arrange things, and it wasn’t long before people started trickling out of the restaurant in small groups.
"A fine Lantern Festival night has turned into a night of terror instead!" Wufu exclaimed.
Ah Jiu, sipping tea, remarked, "Such things happen everywhere; whenever it’s a major festival, some people will take the opportunity to cause trouble."
Wufu looked at him in surprise, "You don’t seem surprised by these events."
Ah Jiu, with his eyes lowered, said, "This is still peacetime. If it were during troubled times, it would only be more chaotic."
"In times of chaos, there wouldn’t be any lanterns to admire; people would probably be hunkered down, trying to get by." Wufu scoffed.
Ah Jiu didn’t speak, and the private room became quiet.
Light footsteps were heard, and Purple Jade announced from the doorway, "Miss, Jadeite has returned!"
Wufu immediately stood up.
Jadeite and Xiao Li walked in together, and as soon as they saw Wufu and Ah Jiu, they hurriedly paid their respects.
"There’s no need for such formalities. Jadeite, is Madam alright?" Wufu asked urgently.
"Miss, rest assured, when I arrived at the Wu Residence, Jadeite was just getting out of the carriage with Madam. Madam is unharmed," Xiao Li spoke up first.
Wufu breathed a sigh of relief but still looked at Jadeite.
Jadeite said, "Miss, you can relax. We were some distance from the collapsed lantern pavilion. The crowd only became panicked and pushy, but I immediately led Madam through a shortcut back to the residence. Madam was just a bit startled, and once back home, she was fine. She ordered me to come and attend to you, to look after yourself well and not worry about her."
"It’s good that nothing happened. What about the other members of the family?"
"Everyone from our household is unharmed, we all returned home safely," replied Jadeite.
Wufu finally felt completely at ease, "That’s a relief."
"Miss, during the commotion, I thought I saw a kidnapper carrying off a child," Jadeite hesitated before saying, "I was protecting Madam at the time and couldn’t spare the effort to save them."
Wufu frowned and turned to Ah Jiu.
"Under such circumstances, it’s not unusual for criminals to take advantage," Ah Jiu said, "Those who said their children are missing are probably exactly those taken away by such people!"
Wufu spoke coldly, "If they’re found, all well and good, but if not, who knows how many families will be ruined, how many more orphans there will be. This is simply heartless."
No one in the room responded, just the sound of sighing.
