Douluo: Transforming Xiao Wu into a Zerg Queen Was Just the Beginning-Chapter 23: Genetic Fusion Experiment
Chapter 23 - 23: Genetic Fusion Experiment
Lin Fan turned his gaze toward the first spore pod.

Inside was a century-old tiger-type soul beast, classified as an agility-attack type.
Due to the physical strain of gene fusion, the process required stronger host bodies.
So Lin Fan had ordered his Zerg forces to capture and transport various robust ground-type soul beasts from within the Star Dou Forest back to the hive.
"Overmind, open the gene database interface."
[As you command, my Lord.]
A long list of gene entries appeared in Lin Fan's mind, dazzling and overwhelming.
The hardened armor and venomous stingers of the Earth King Beetle, the iron hide and claws of the Vajra Tiger, the resilient silk and venom of the Man-Faced Demon Spider...
An array of soul beast genes filled the database like a shopping catalog, and Lin Fan couldn't help but feel like he was browsing through product descriptions in a mall.
Even among the same species, individual soul beasts yielded different genes.
For example, the Zerg had hunted over a dozen Man-Faced Demon Spiders—yet extracted over ten different types of genes.
Normally, a single soul beast would yield one or two traits at most. But even within the same species, variations in physique and talent allowed for the extraction of dozens of unique genes.
Lin Fan browsed through the data, noting a few unusual gene types.
One Vajra Tiger had a gene for rapid digestion—useless in combat. Even more absurd, one Pink Empress yielded a gene related to... libido.
The corner of Lin Fan's mouth twitched uncontrollably. He glanced at the Hydralisk standing by the door.
With its grotesque, insectoid features, it was impossible to tell if it was male or female—and frankly, who would even want to know?
Not to mention, one wrong move and you'd probably get sprayed in the face with a mouthful of corrosive slime.
He shook his head. That gene was the most useless of all.
After skimming the endless list for a while, Lin Fan sighed in frustration.
There's way too much here. I'll never get through it all.
After a moment's thought, he said, "Overmind, delete all genes currently unusable by the Zerg and organize what remains."
[Acknowledged.]
The interface in his mind began to scroll rapidly as rows of data vanished one after another.
[Update complete. Usable gene count: 351.]
Lin Fan was stunned. From 1,351 down to just 351?
Over a thousand genes completely useless?
But he quickly accepted it—after all, he had only explored less than one-tenth of the Star Dou Forest.
His soul beast hunts had been limited, and most of the specimens were weak or repetitive.
To still end up with over 300 viable genes was actually pretty good.
Looking over the refined list, Lin Fan noticed several genes with overlapping effects.
The iron hide from the Vajra Tiger, the carapace reinforcement from the Man-Faced Demon Spider, and the armored scales from the Abyssal Python were all variations of the same trait: enhancing defense and durability.
These could totally be merged into a single superior trait.
An idea struck him.
"Overmind, begin fusion and upgrading of all genes with similar effects. Delete any redundant genes post-fusion. Only display the final results."
[Understood.]
[Fusion process requires hosts for testing. Please grant authorization.]
"Permission granted. Proceed."
[Authorization confirmed. Beginning now.]
Zzzhhh—!
The fleshy walls of the incubation chamber suddenly extended hundreds of writhing, vein-like tendrils that tightly wrapped around three large spore pods.
Each pod held a millennium-level soul beast.
Since gene infusion placed tremendous stress on the body, the tests required soul beasts with high physical endurance.
Capturing ten-thousand-year soul beasts alive was still beyond the Zerg's capabilities...
And most hundred-year beasts simply didn't have the toughness required to survive the process.
These three were all relatively weak, just having recently broken into the thousand-year level.
Even Lin Fan, hardened by the sight of countless soul beast deaths, felt a tinge of reluctance.
No, not because he pitied the soul beasts.
But because these were his only three thousand-year specimens—and if the gene infusion failed, he'd lose them permanently.
He had planned to use their strong bodies to create advanced Zerg strains...
Gurgle—!
A strange fluid noise echoed from the chamber walls as blue biofluid began flowing through the veins and into the first spore pod.
Simultaneously, the Overmind's voice rang in Lin Fan's mind:
[Phase One Gene Fusion: Physical Reinforcement. Gene infusion initiated.]
The massive Earth King Beetle inside the pod began to tremble violently, its face contorted in silent agony.
Crack! Crack!
The unsettling sound of bones snapping and carapace shattering echoed from within.
Its pitch-black exoskeleton shattered piece by piece, and its enormous pincers fractured inch by inch.
Soon, the entire shell had disintegrated, exposing raw, quivering flesh beneath. Through the spasming muscle tissue, exposed blood vessels and nerves could be faintly seen.
Ka-ka-ka—!
Suddenly, a crisp, echoing sound rang out. A new layer of dark, glossy skin rapidly grew over its body, fully encasing it.
Its broken pincers regrew as sleek, curved blade-arms, sharp and deadly.
Before long, the creature inside the spore pod had transformed—its entire body now encased in shimmering, obsidian armor nearly an inch thick.
Even through the pod walls, Lin Fan could feel the oppressive, suffocating aura it radiated.
It was like standing before a towering mountain. The sheer pressure pouring from its form filled the room with dread—just a glance was enough to invoke despair, as if facing an insurmountable chasm.
[Phase One Fusion Complete. Finalized Reinforcement-Type Gene: Titanium Body.]
[Phase Two Gene Fusion: Explosive Mutation. Commencing fusion.]
This time, golden liquid slowly flowed along the bio-veins into a much smaller spore pod.
Inside was a mere ten-year-old spider-type soul beast.
They hadn't used a beast over a hundred years old because explosive-type genes were too volatile.
These genes had been extracted from soul beasts like spiders, lizards, and snakes with massive venom sacs in their bodies.
And they all shared one trait: their venom sacs were highly unstable and would detonate on contact!
The resulting explosions weren't just powerful—they also splattered highly toxic fluids everywhere.
If they tested this kind of gene on a stronger soul beast and it failed? The consequences could be catastrophic.
It might even destroy the entire Level-3 Hatchery and blow off the roof in the process.
Gurgle—!
The golden liquid was fully injected into the spider's body.
Suddenly—
The spider's tiny body began to swell rapidly!
From palm-sized, it bloated into a grotesque, balloon-like shape.
Its surface split open in multiple places, with golden, unknown fluids slowly leaking from the wounds.
[Warning! Warning!]
[Severe energy fluctuation detected!]
