Chapter 151: Alliance by the Blade’s Edge

Sylphera used her magic to summon the key figures to the hospital, gathering those involved or asked by Bel.

Inside, Bel walked beside Sylphera. Novaria followed closely behind him. Aurus stayed near the king, who was still in shock after hearing about Edward. The Sacreds behind, all silent, and Crest walked next to Airi, sneaking looks at Novaria, clearly confused about what to make of her.

Sylphera continued their discussion.

"So, based on what we’ve seen, I think Midas uses a sort of curse to switch his fate to someone else. Basically, when he is killed, his death goes to someone else."

"Though so," Bel replied with a nod. "I was suspecting that. I killed him again and again, but each time, he came back. Now it makes sense."

The others looked at each other. Astros frowned. Airi seemed surprised.

"You... fought a demon lord?" Gaia asked.

Bel kept walking.

"Yes. He ran away. But I’ll find him again... and finish it."

His voice was quiet but carried weight. It wasn’t anger, it was certainty. Midas was already done for.

A long, uneasy silence followed. No one responded at first. Some exchanged hesitant glances. Astros furrowed his brow. Airi raised an eyebrow, as if seeing nonsense. Gaia’s lips parted slightly, but no words came. Even the king, still dazed, blinked slowly as if trying to process what had just been said.

Astros hesitated, then asked.

"What’s your connection to the other demon lords?"

All eyes were fixed on Bel, but no one dared to speak. The question that had hung in everyone’s mind was finally asked.

Was this demon lord an ally... or another threat?

Then Bel spoke.

Bel finally answered.

"Murderer and targets."

Three words, that’s all it took. His words landed heavily, and no one questioned him anymore.

"By the way, Midas," Bel added, glancing over his shoulder, "his real name is Mammon. If you say his name, you’ll force him to show his real face."

Everyone, except Sylphera, gasped. The youngest of them, the Sacred with a wand, muttered, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Is this really happening... a demon lord helping us?"

The words echoed in the silence. For a moment, no one else spoke. Eyes turned to Sylphera, expecting her to correct or deny the claim.

But she didn’t.

Even she looked faintly surprised, lips parted slightly. A demon lord helping them, it didn’t sound real, but it was really happening.

Then, Kardraxt let out a dry laugh.

"If we’re giving names, your Lord, what’s yours? I mean, your real name?"

Everything stopped. The room froze. Faces turned to Kardrax as if he’d just crossed a sacred line.

Sylphera didn’t move, but her expression darkened. Airi’s hand hovered at her side, fingers twitching. Novaria’s smile faded. Bel alone remained calm.

Kardrax lifted his shoulders in a mock shrug, pretending innocence.

"If you want us to trust you, shouldn’t you give us at least that much? After all, one of the only ways to kill a demon for good is to do it while they’re in their true form. If you’re really our ally, this would be enough to believe in you."

Everyone slowly turned toward Bel, tense and quiet, waiting for his answer. But Bel gave no sign of having heard the words. He kept walking, unbothered.

Kardrax frowned, then spoke again, louder this time.

"So it’s—"

"Sure," Bel cut in, his voice flat.

The word hit them like a slap. No one had expected a response, let alone so casually. There was a brief moment when it didn’t register. Then, their eyes widened, breaths hitched, and the air seemed to freeze.

Kardrax blinked, confused.

"Wait... for real?"

Bel didn’t stop.

"Yes. I’ll give you my name. And after that, I’ll kill one human every minute until you kill me. You’re all free to take your chance."

Everyone stiffened. The air felt heavy, and no one spoke. Bel hadn’t raised his voice, but something about the calm way he spoke sent a chill through the room.

But then he added, just as casually.

"Or I give you ten names. You guess the right one. Until you do, I turn one human into a demon every second. Choose your game."

Kardrax narrowed his eyes, but before he could answer, Gaia stepped forward.

"Don’t overestimate yourself, you might be a demon lord, but we’re not weak."

Bel turned his head slightly, the corner of his mouth twitching.

"You fought demon generals.

You held your ground one-on-one, but you got crushed when you got outnumbered. A demon lord would erase a general without blinking."

"I’m fine giving my name. Just decide the price you’re willing to pay."

Though uneasy, everyone seemed almost relieved. Bel’s blunt honesty was what they had expected. He wasn’t pretending to be kind or safe. If anything, he dared them to react.

Kardrax gave a dry look and muttered.

"Well, at least you have balls. Guess can keep playing with this guessing game."

Bel turned his head slowly, speaking in a steady voice that felt heavier.

"If you keep pushing me, you’ll get your chance to see how you fight a demon lord."

Kardrax froze, then looked away, clicking his tongue in annoyance. No one else said anything.

They reached a waiting room where the Baron stood at the door.

At first, the man looked distant, as if lost in thought. Then he saw Bel. His expression changed. He blinked, processing what he was seeing. His face went red.

"You... you... YOU!!! IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!!!"

Sylphera stepped forward, raising a hand.

"Baron, do not—"

But Bel didn’t slow down. He stepped once, and a wave of pressure pulsed from him. The Baron’s body shook, his eyes rolled back, and he collapsed.

The group stood frozen in shock, staring at the unconscious man.

Bel said nothing. He simply opened the door and walked inside.

They entered Dusteria’s room quietly. The mood was heavy, everyone tense. Bel looked at her, her body covered in blood-stained bandages. After a moment of silence, Sylphera asked the question on everyone’s mind.

"Can you save her? Like you did with Sienna?"

Bel took a moment, almost frozen in appearance, then shook his head.

"No. It’s not possible."

He walked closer and raised a finger toward Dusteria’s face. As it neared her bandages, tiny sparks of dark light crackled around his hand. Everyone watched closely.

"She’s already filled with the presence of another Demon Lord. If I try to turn her now..." The sparks grew more violent for a second before he pulled back. "Our powers would clash. It would kill her."

The room went still. Then came a soft thump. Everyone turned. It was Sienna, or rather, Novaria. She had hit the wall with her fist, cracking the surface, her face clenched in frustration.

"So there’s nothing we can do?" she asked, barely holding back her emotions. Her eyes turned to Bel, pleading.

Crest glanced at her, surprised. That reaction... it was pure Sienna. Different body, different power, but the same soul. That frustration, that heart, it was still her.

Bel looked at her for a long moment.

"Not right now," he said. "But if she stays alive, I’ll find something."

He turned to Sylphera.

"You said Elysia was heading to Castella?"

Sylphera nodded.

"It’s a dense city. That’s where we sent Maël, the Hero, to hide. Elysia being able to copy him so perfectly means she knows his exact location. But the fact that she didn’t tell you could also mean she probably kept that information from the other Demon Lords."

Bel nodded again, processing it.

"Castella, then. That’s our only lead."

Sylphera looked at him with thought.

"We plan to head there to check on Maël and follow Elysia’s trail. You should come with us. If we join forces, we might actually stand a chance."

Bel crossed his arms, thinking, then shook his head.

"I get why you want that. But I have things to finish before going. I’ll reach Castella in my own time."

But Airi couldn’t handle this answer. She stepped forward, crossing her arms, voice sharp.

"So you’re running off again? Just like today. Too good to fight with us?"

She gave him a look filled with frustration. Bel glanced at her calmly, saying nothing. Astros stepped between them, making a quiet gesture to calm her down.

"Airi. I understand you, but this time, please..." he said softly. "We should focus on the bigger picture."

Airi gritted her jaw.

"If you were in the capital back then, maybe there wouldn’t have been so many dead. And now you’re doing it again. Leaving, right when we might have to face another demon lord."

Bel looked at her, unfazed.

"Then this is your chance. You always said you were special. Prove it."

His words cut through the room. He looked around at all of them.

"You keep expecting me to act like we’re on the same side. But I’m not one of you. We have the same enemies, that’s all. Our alliance is just an exchange of services. I kill demons. I free the cursed. In return, I want one thing."

He turned to Aurus.

"Guard the children in the orphanage that the viscount visited. Make sure they stay safe. Every single one."

Aurus frowned. This information came out of nowhere.

"Why do you care about them?"

Bel stared back with cold eyes.

"It doesn’t matter. You do your part, I do mine, and everyone survives."

Aurus looked like he wanted to argue, but Sylphera stepped in.

"We’ll head to Castella first. You’re free to move as you like. I just hope our timing lines up."

Bel nodded.

"You should be safe there. Like I said, for some monsters, a battle is as normal as sleep. And the more they fight, the bigger they become."

He turned toward the door and headed out.

"Sienna." He called.

Sienna, standing quietly behind, nodded and followed him.

But just as she reached the threshold of the door, she heard her name.

"Sienna!" Crest called out, his voice cracking. He took a few steps forward, almost desperate. "Please... don’t go. Come back."

She stopped, her hand hovering near the doorway. For seconds, she didn’t move. Her back stayed turned, but then, her voice came through.

"I used to think if I just waited, if I stayed still, things would go back to how they were. That somehow, normal would return."

She turned just enough to glance over her shoulder, her eyes catching his.

"But now I have power. Real power. And I’ve seen too much to believe in that kind of foolishness anymore. There are other ways."

She paused, her gaze lingering on Crest’s pleading face for one final heartbeat. Then she looked forward again.

"I’m not running away," she added quietly. "I’m choosing to move forward."

And with that, she stepped through the doorway, disappearing from sight, leaving behind Crest and the others, locked in heavy silence.
