Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 379: Surrounded by enemies
When the presenter finished rousing up the crowd Uriel was taken to the 'champion step' where he took the place that used to belong to the last hunter he defeated when he took the challenge. There, he was supposed to wait for his turn in fighting the challengers that would come one after the other since it was a private event.
Uriel had no intentions of keeping his spot on the ladder, he also didn't care for winning. But he needed to buy enough time so Nika would be able to find Medusa's whereabouts. Thankfully, since he performed well last time he didn't have to face any small fries and all he had to do was to wait and see the matches.
The first few challengers were evolved with combat suited traits, which came as a surprise to him since they should have been able to join the army, the rangers or even any company they wanted. That kind of trait was highly sought by everyone, even if the hunter was only of the evolved level, since most hunters had the possibility to rank up after killing a certain amount of cryptids.
Just like the first time he participated on the ladder, every time a challenger defeated his enemy he would face the next 'step' on the ladder, but things were different now. As soon as the defeated hunter received medical treatment, he had to face the next opponent. Explore more stories at novelbuddy
This meant they didn't have any time to rest or recover flux energy and as soon as it was Uriel's turn to fight he realized that throwing the fights wasn't an option as it would only result in him being injured.
The first challenger Uriel needed to face was a man with razor sharp nails and a smug look on his face. Since he was the first challenger to reach Uriel's step all the attention of the crowd was set on him, though no one expected much from his fight since last time most of his fights were considered boring.
Uriel didn't care for the approval of strangers nor was he really interested in winning the fight, but he decided to buy as much time as he could by wasting his opponent's time. He dodged each and every strike sent his way until his opponent was sweating buckets and on the verge of falling due to fatigue, but Uriel didn't attack and simply waited for him to recover.
"What's wrong with you? Don't you know how to throw a punch?" The man snorted and then spat on the floor. Because of how long the fight was taking there was already a line of challengers waiting for their turn and people in the crowd were already starting to boo, when the presenter hurriedly grabbed the microphone.
"Oh! It seems that Masked man isn't taking this seriously, what do you honored guests think if we up the difficulty a notch?" The crowd bursted in excitement as three hunters joined Uriel's arena.
"Crap..." Uriel muttered as sweat began trickling down his forehead. It took but a glance of his new opponents to notice that two of them were ascended, but not everything was lost. The third one was an evolved, but it was someone Uriel knew. An intense shimmer surrounded Uriel and a power surge coursed through his body and he hurriedly thanked the one responsible with a polite nod.
"Didn't expect to see you back here so soon, boss." Phlox said with a smile after landing a punch that sent one of the ascended flying out of the arena and an intense roar emerged from the crowd.
The presenter didn't know what was going on, since Phlox was supposed to attack the masked man instead of joining him, but she was already sick and tired of all the underground fighting and all she wanted was to become a salaried employee again.
All the hunters waiting in line to defeat Uriel suddenly joined the arena. More than a fighting match it looked like a battle royale, but that only lasted until the contestants realized that Phlox and Uriel were siding together.
One by one they defeated the enemies that ranged from mildly annoying to almost as strong as them, but no one could last long against their team effort. Uriel was so immersed in the battle that by the time they finished the last opponent he forgot he was being watched by so many people and grabbed an energy drink from his trait to recover some stamina.
They waited or a couple seconds for the presenter to either introduce a new fighter or to declare the end of the fight, but that didn't come to happen. Instead, a dead silence took over the whole place as everyone looked directly at Uriel. The formerly excited crowd was now filled with people staring at him in silence.
"What's going on here?" Phlox asked, but Uriel refused to answer as he was still trying to wrap his head around the fact that everyone in the crowd looked exactly the same and just when Uriel thought things couldn't be any worse, Nika walked slowly towards them carrying a wounded copy of herself.
"Well, well, what do we have here? It seems someone infiltrated our home."
"Miss Nika!?" Phlox gasped.
Luna didn't seem to realize what was going on until she saw Nika walking to the arena, then she jumped out of her seat since it was too tall for her to reach the floor and she too proceeded to walk towards the arena.
Uriel thought the Nika in front of him was a doppelganger, at least until she winked and showed him a silver coin.
"I'm so making you pay for this, Nika." he said as he gritted his teeth preparing himself for battle.

Each and every one of the spectators was either a skinwalker or a doppelganger, which was confirmed by the lights of the arena turning off as soon as they walked in close enough for their field of disruption to take effect.
It was Uriel's team against a crowd of hybrid and entity rank cryptids that an ascended shouldn't be able to defeat in single combat, but for some odd reason, Uriel was smiling.
