Chapter 948: Dinner at Luna’s

After dropping off Sam, the Pegasus continued its journey north east to the place that used to be called the Navajo nation where the lycanthropes had made their settlement. Along the way, however, they were able to catch a glimpse on the megacity of New Texas which they expected to be in ruins by then, though it actually looked better.

The walls were in perfect condition, the auto turrets had been upgraded and more importantly, the previously gray skyscrapers that tainted the skyline looked more modern in a white style that highlighted the city in the distance.

"This must be their doing." Medusa scoffed thinking on what knowledge could the gods be sharing with the megacity’s engineers. She was somewhat envious, although she too had gained a portion of the divine knowledge of technology thanks to their brief expedition in Chichén Itzá.

"Uhm... you just passed the village." Luna said awkwardly.

"Sorry! I was distracted." Medusa steered the wheel with such force the ship performed in the sky the equivalent of a race car drifting.

The zeppelin landed by the outskirts of the village, which was marked by the totems that kept the cryptids away and the landing bay kissed the ground allowing Luna and a few others to climb off the ship.

"Why?" Luna asked in her accustomed stone face.

"He did it for all of us." Miss Dragonfang wiped a tear off her eyes as she saw the Pegasus fly away.

"Not that, you moron," Phlox buried her face in her hands as she usually did when her friend acted stupid, which was way more common that she would have preferred. "she’s asking why did we come along."

"You said your mother knows a lot about hybrid history so I want to know what kind of hybrid I am." Lizzy said poking out her tongue.

"I just want to ask your mother if there are other kanaimas on this world." Amy said blushingly as the reason for her curiosity was actually finding a boyfriend. She knew kanaimas were supposedly extinct, but Uriel had told her there were a couple in the Dolminicos which meant there could be more.

"Not you, why did he come," Luna looked at Mister Scofield then looked the other way in a subtle hint of embarrassment. "we don’t have a library."

"A library you say? That is a shame, books are wonderful companions and I would love to have something to read while I recover. But the reason I came here is because I need a safe haven. Being a holy rank hunter comes with many perks, but if I set foot in the wild I will catch on the attention of all the foul cryptids that scour the land."

"Respectively," A calm feminine voice came announced the arrival of the town’s leader and Luna’s mother, Moonblaze. "you’re not a hybrid; there are a few kanaimas, but your chances of meeting a mate are slim to none; and I would be delighted to provide you a safe place while you recover, General Scofield, or should I say Quill?"

"You may call me Xavier, madame." Scofield said as he kissed the hand that was extended to him by Moonblaze who reacted by looking to the side with feigned shyness.

"Oh my! There may be other things I can offer to such a gentleman."

"Mother." Luna scolded in a monotone that somehow carried more weight than a shout.

"Books, I meant books. We may not have a library, but we have plenty of books stored. What kind of illiterate people do you think we are?" Moonblaze pretended to be offended.

"I will graciously accept anything you have to offer."

"Such a flirt." Moonblaze replied and the atmosphere became dense as both Luna and Lizzy did not know how to react. Most of the people who landed did so because it was the last stop in the continent before Medusa headed to Europe to seek for her mother and they had different purposes, but one thing they had in common was they were all taken aback by the back and forth flirting scene in front of them which lasted a while.

Moonblaze led everyone into town which was pretty much the same as it was when Luna left, though there were more houses and more people in the outside and the place seemed to be thriving. There was also a huge difference though not many noticed it and it was the crops that were being planted around the town were not wheat anymore but ambrosia.

The plant itself did not stand out, though it yielded what Luna described as a super food that a single ration could stock up a hunter with enough energy for an entire incursion. That food, however, was only good for hunters and regular humans who attempted to consume it would die without fail.

"Don’t you like the dinner I prepared?" Cassandra said with an expectant look in her eyes as the guests hesitated before taking the first bite.

"Where is the meat?" Luna poked at the dish served in front of her with disinterest as she only found greens.

"Eat it, it’s good for you. You too, Xavier, this will help you recover much faster." She said as she served an extra portion to the general whose plate was already full to begin with.

"Why are we the only ones here?" Miss Dragonfang asked with suspicion.

"Don’t worry about your friends, they were taken in by other families and are being treated well. It’s just that we couldn’t accommodate everyone in this house alone." Moonblaze lied so blatantly Lizzy felt tempted to tilt the table and go wherever Phlox was to eat with her. But two things stopped her.

The first being the odd behavior of her father who was usually completely unconcerned about women. From a very young age she had seen him being hit on by multiple women almost everywhere, even though she failed to see what did everyone see in him. The second reason being that while she unwittingly grabbed a bite just because there was food in front of her, she realized something.

"This is delicious!" Lizzy cupped her cheeks as the rich sensation of the hunter’s meal filled her with a sensation she had never experienced before. Her eyes widened as pleasure traversed her body giving an electric feeling that conveyed shivers to her skin and gave her goosebumps.

"Careful, my mother has a knack for mind control. I would not be surprised if this was a drug." Luna let out a low growl.

"Nonsense, this is what we all eat everyday. We cannot hunt anymore because the game was infected and our town was about to face starvation. Isn’t that precisely the reason why you gave us the seeds?" Moonblaze asked, this time with sharp eyes that pierced through Luna’s tantrum.

"Yes, it is true. This plant should be safe to consume to all hunters and while it’s not addictive, it does cause dependency like coffee, but only because it is highly nutritious. So much so, in fact, that it’s the god’s preferred meal source." Luna explained, though she was a second late for stopping Miss Dragonfang from spitting a mouthful chewed food.

"Geez! It took me long to cook this." Cassandra glared at Miss Dragonfang who seemed to shrink under the gaze of the former general of the army.

"So, is it true? Did the gods actually come?" Moonblaze asked.

"I’m afraid so, they took over at least one of the megacities, but I’m sure there are plenty more if not all," Scofield said after wiping his mouth with a blanket then continued after looking at the host. "you knew gods existed and you don’t seem surprised by what I just told you."

"I’ve been anticipating this for a while, it was only a matter of time anyway. The first time this happened the world was thrown into such chaos and I even lost my husband." No one at the table missed that she found the chance to drop the fact that she was a widow in the last sentence.

"You always do this." Luna said as she grabbed her plate and went to her room to eat and the conversation at the table proceeded without her. Not that it made any difference as nothing Moonblaze said would be news to Luna.

She knew the gods existed, she knew the arrival was a fated event triggered by the amount of flux in the atmosphere. The arrival was not a coincidence, but a conscious attempt from both sides to release as much flux energy in the outside as possible in order to strengthen the world and make it suitable for divine beings and titans alike to walk the earth.

Moonblaze was as knowledgeable as someone who lived at the top of the hybrid community her entire life, but Luna was one step ahead as she not only knew what was recorded in history and passed down from generation to generation.

Thanks to her investigation she also knew the reason why it had to be that way, but more importantly, she knew how it would end.
