Dungeon Raider System-Chapter 954: Humanity’s grudge Part 1
Chapter 954: Humanity’s grudge Part 1
It had taken long to make the preparations for Uriel’s plan and what would likely be the Dungeon Raider’s last mission as a company, but the results were evident the moment they stood in front of the city gates.
From left to Right, Luna, Nika, Uriel, Medusa and Sam awaited for the gates to open bearing a serious expression each, not a hint of anxiousness leaking through their faces despite the fact that they were out in the open at the fringes of the enemy territory.
Be it confidence, arrogance or the fact that each of them had already forfeited their life, it couldn’t be said, though those who looked at them assumed it had to be confidence as they appeared to be the strongest hunting party they had ever seen.
Luna, being the smallest in size, may have seemed like the weakest of them all, though the brand new orichalcum armor gave off the ominous look of a barbarian beast lord. It was made with micro metric precision and it was perfectly detailed, though its design somewhat conveyed the wildness of the beast that resided within her.
The next one was Nika, whom despite the lack of armor carried herself with the confidence of a veteran. Her camo pants and black shirt somehow revealing and at the same time perfectly appropriate for every occasion, at least according to her.
Medusa, already standing tall over most of her companions, seemed to be even bigger with the pneumatic arm guards that served both as protection and empower her strikes with the force of her industrial grade equipment, though thanks to being realized in orichalcum it allowed to far surpass the limitations of the original blueprint.
Contrary to the rest of his companions, Sam didn’t look intimidating at all. If anything, he seemed like a charming young man completely out of place if not for the grandiose wings he fluttered behind his back. This was made possible only thanks to him being a holy rank hunter, though his flux reserve had increased by leaps and bounds from the time he became possessed by Water warlock.
The last one on the team was Uriel, though recognizing him would have been difficult even by his own mother. Not that she knew him well to begin with, but even his own companions seemed barely able to keep their eyes off of him.
For starters, other than what seemed like a tribal wear that covered his modesty, he was completely naked to the point where he wasn’t even wearing his fedora which was already odd. Even stranger were the tribal tattoos that covered him from top to bottom in what resembled mystical patterns though recognizing which culture did they belong to was impossible. If anything, the only reason why the guards knew it had to be him and not anybody else was that he carried the Red thread of fate in one hand and a revolver on the other, but more telling was the presence of the jaguar spirit that had turned Uriel into a legend by the name of Raider in the city.
"Call the gods, they’re here." Said a guard somberly.
"That’s so weird, calling them on the phone." The other guard replied with an amused laugh.
"Hurry up and call them, they might suspect you delayed the information on purpose if you don’t." The first guard grunted then pressed the button that opened the giant doors to the megacity of New Texas.
"Are you nuts!? Why are you letting them in?" The second guard rushed in to attempt to stop his colleague from opening the door, but he was too late.
"Why are you calling me names? The gods themselves warned us about them, what makes you think we could hold them off even if we closed the doors and sounded the alarm?" That was what the guard said, though deep inside of him a spark of hop lit up the moment he saw them.
In all of his years working as a gate guard he had seen many things, from young hunting parties heading out filled with dreams only to never be seen again to large incursion teams organized by the army, returning as nothing but a bunch of wounded soldiers. He had also seen and heard some pretty weird things, probably caused by cryptids trying to get inside or maybe just loitering around. Night shifts were particularly cumbersome for the mind of the gate guard and he wished he could erase most of his memories about his work. It affected him to the point where keeping social relationships was impossible and even sleeping came at the price of weekly therapy and medication.
However, there were also a few moments that made him appreciate his work, apart from the high salary he received that is. From time to time, special people would show up and even though he always attempted to keep his expectations at a minimum, he still kept an eye on those hunters.
One of said hunters was Uriel, whom he first noticed after he returned from an incursion in which the guard later found out a shapeshifter was killed. Uriel himself was branded as someone who abandoned his team out of fear, but the guard never believed such rumors to be true. Especially after some time passed and saw his growth first hand.
Uriel could not tell one city guard from the next, not that it would have been easy anyway considering most of them wore full armor including a mask to prevent their identities from being known. But he was always sure to remain cordial with them unlike most hunters who didn’t even acknowledge their existence. And even when Uriel was persecuted and had to run away from the gate guards, he always kept in mind they were only doing their job and didn’t hold it against them.
At that moment, watching the five hunters walk inside the megacity, the guard realized he had made the right choice by opening the gates. Not because he feared for his life or because the gods had told him to let him in if he came, but because he knew it in his heart that along with those hunters he had also let the winds of change inside the city.
From the moment they passed the tunnel, hundreds of people crowded around the newcomers though they dared not to approach them or get in their way. Their determined looks that ignored all around them was more than enough to know they weren’t just visiting but on a mission that had to be carried out.
Thinking they had to be famous, some people grabbed their smartphones and started recording. Their smiles grew larger as they noticed the amount of people that joined in their streams far surpassed their expectations. Most of those who watched did so at first because of the novelty, but the news that someone riding a jaguar had entered the city even the mainstream media started covering it and displayed it in every corner. free𝑤ebnovel.com
This would have worked against the Dungeon Raiders had they decided to sneak inside the city, but their plan was the absolute opposite as they wanted to draw all the eyes of the city directly on them. For such purposes the girls insisted on Uriel taking off his shirt and even though it hurt Sam’s feelings that they didn’t demand the same of him, he didn’t miss the opportunity to propose that they wore more revealing clothes than usual.
Little did he know that his suggestion was already a part of their plan and not even Luna opposed it, though it didn’t matter much considering how even though the only thing she wore in regards of clothes was the skin tight orichalcum underarmor, the rest of her body was covered by the actual armor Medusa crafted for her.
In that sense, the only one who caught most of the stares was Medusa who had no qualms on wearing a provocative outfit, if it could even be called as such considering how little fabric it actually had. After all, thanks to Medusa’s martial arts prowess she had no need for armor and decided to focus on the offensive gear instead.
Although unfamiliar with the technology, there was no way the gods didn’t notice the presence of the defiant hunters whose purpose only they knew. Not because of their divinity, but because Aphrodite had warned them several times against the hunter who defeated an albeit weak god but a god nonetheless.
"I knew they would come," She said bearing a smile, not just because she confirmed her suspicions, but because she had enough time to prepare for this precise event. As the goddess of beauty, she had taken the already beautiful vessel that was Tina Celes and turned her into the objectively most beautiful woman on earth, but now that her following had become numerous making people beautiful was nothing but a parlor trick. "it’s about time we teach them properly, that humans are nothing but bugs to be squashed." she finished with an eerie glint in her eyes as she looked through the window the various TVs that displayed the Dungeon Raider’s position.
