Educated Youth in the Countryside: She is the Village's Embroidery Queen!-Chapter 455: Frozen Like a Foolish Deer
In the evening, the couple sat in their chairs, staring blankly at the two bucks on the table.
After a while, Wen Shi asked, "Wife, how much does it cost to buy a doll?"
"I don’t know."
She had never bought a doll, didn’t have the need, and naturally wouldn’t know the price.
Looking at Wen Shi’s face, she asked, "Why, are you planning to get Sisi a doll?"
"No, I can’t."
If he bought it, Old Zhou wouldn’t just take it for free; he’d pay for it, and that’s a burden for him since dolls aren’t cheap.
When giving gifts, you should hit people right in the heart for it to be effective.
Otherwise, it’s just a waste of a gift.
"But I can buy some candy for Sisi and them."
This was indeed feasible.
So, Yi Chichi stuffed the money into his pocket, "You take care of it yourself."
Wen Shi made a sound of agreement, lifted her in his arms, and said, "Wash up and go to bed; from now on, we should cherish every minute we have together."
The next time they meet might be in a few months at the least.
The mere thought of it made one feel melancholic!
But feeling melancholic was useless, and appreciating time was useless too; meeting was tough, and parting was easy.
After bidding farewell to Uncle Ning and the others at the Friendship Store with his materials, Wen Shi stayed silent all the way while escorting her onto the train, setting her luggage in place, and reminded her, "Wife, the first thing you do when you get home is send me a telegram."
"Okay!"
"Write me a letter, preferably once a week."
If she really wrote at that frequency, given the current mailing speed, they’d probably pile up and be sent all together.
The key point being, there’s not that much content to even write about.
But seeing Wen Shi’s eyes full of expectation, she sighed inwardly, still unable to convince herself to fulfill his small wish.
Mainly, the situation didn’t allow for it.
"Mr. Wen, let me remind you, it’s already started snowing back home. Do you think it’s appropriate for me to brave the biting cold and strong winds to the commune to send you letters?"
"Not appropriate."
He answered quickly too, "But when spring comes, once a week is okay, right?!"
Makeshift arrangements for winter trips to the commune showed he cared about her, spring would be different, with temperatures rising, trips to the commune were convenient.
"Okay."
That indeed was doable, more frequent trips to the commune when spring came.
"Then I’ll take mom to get a picture and send it to you."
Wen Shi, "Why didn’t you take one earlier?"
Yi Chichi chuckled awkwardly, "I just didn’t think of it earlier."
She didn’t have the habit of taking pictures, even when selfies became popular later on, she never did it on her social media, never liked taking photos.
Coming into this world, the only time she took a picture was when she got married to Wen Shi, needed it for the marriage certificate, otherwise, she wouldn’t even go take it.
"After spring, every month I’ll take one and send it over, you and mom together."
"Okay."
"Send me some food; have mom make more soybean paste, Old He also loves it."
"Doesn’t Zhang Xin know how to make it?"
"Not as good as mom’s."
In other words: neither he nor Old He liked it much.
"Okay!"
While they were talking, a sharp whistle sounded, Wen Shi opened his arms to hug her, "Wife, I’m leaving, be cautious on the road, have you packed the medicine powder and needles?"
"They’re packed." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶
Wen Shi gave her a deep look, got off the train.
He didn’t leave in a hurry, instead, stood by the window until the train gradually departed, completely out of sight, then turned away and left.
Yi Chichi wasn’t faring much better, she lay by the window, watching Wen Shi’s silhouette being left behind by the speeding train, turning from a large figure into a small black dot, completely disappearing from her sight, only then she accepted the reality of their parting again.
However, her emotions were always steady, and she consistently believed that if you could meet again, the parting wasn’t a true farewell.
So, after a brief sense of loss, she went back to her normal routine of eating, sleeping, reading, and knitting.
Five days and seven nights passed in a flash, and the Baoshan Commune finally arrived.
With the intense snowstorm, stepping off the train, Yi Chichi was almost stupefied looking at the icy world outside the station.
It’s only October, and there’s such heavy snow; it’s more frightening than she anticipated; now what?
The clothing she’s wearing isn’t enough.
While she was fretting, Captain Uncle appeared in her sight.
Dressed up in a heavy cotton jacket, fully armed, looking like a bear, wrapped snugly, Uncle Captain held a big jacket in his left hand and a bulging big cloth bag in his right hand, came in from the entrance, looking around like he was searching for something.
Her eyes lit up, darting over quickly, "Uncle, I’m here!"
"Lucky I came just in time, or you’d be freezing like a silly roe deer."
Yi Chichi felt embarrassed, just about to speak, the big cloth bag was thrust over, "Your mom prepared clothes and shoes for you, put them on quickly."
"Okay."
This was not the time for courtesy; inside the station, many people were being dressed by family or friends who brought them clothes, and Yi Chichi also didn’t intend to find a place to change, just quickly took out thick sweaters, pants, and padded coats to put on.
Once changed, she was warm indeed, but so thick that her arms couldn’t come back together.
But it doesn’t matter; in this weather, warmth was the priority.
She pulled up her scarf to cover her face, leaving only her eyes exposed, and then pulled down the hat ears to cover her ears, asking, "Uncle, are we going back now?"
"No, we’ll go to the department store first."
Yi Chichi, "??? Isn’t it a supply and marketing cooperative? Why did it change names?"
"The front expanded, new varieties added, and so a name change."
"That’s good."
The Captain nodded, carrying her luggage, walking out, "Chichi, do you have any industrial coupons?"
"I do, how many do you need, Uncle?"
"Not for me, Uncle Zhuzi needs them. His third son is getting married in spring; the bride needs enamel crockery, thermos flasks, these things, and they don’t have enough coupons."
Yi Chichi responded with an "oh", "How many?"
"Ten, and Uncle Zhuzi will exchange them for money with you. How about that?"
"No money needed, I want fine grains."
Her family isn’t short of money, nor tickets, but they do lack fine grains.
Mother-in-law isn’t fond of coarse grains, nor is she.
Qin Jiu, the kid, can’t handle coarse grains for long; it’s bad for his throat and not good for digestion.
Great Uncle and others, being old, need more easily digestible fine grains.
So the more fine grains, the better.
"Alright, I’ll tell him when we get back."
And so, that topic ended.
Once out of the station, the two headed straight for the department store, having a big spree.
Entered empty-handed, came out burdened with bags.
The horse cart parked at the large cart shop, the weather too cold, sparing Old Ma a little frost as possible.
The two walked to the cart shop, sweating all over from the walking.
Only the eyelashes were covered in a layer of ice crystals.
Bringing Yi Chichi to the cart shed, the Captain said, "Climb up, wrap yourself with the sheepskin pad and quilt, I’ll get the horse, and we’ll head back."
"Okay."
Underneath the shed, thick dry grass was laid, walking on it made squeaky sounds, but it was warm and soft, so the noise was bearable.
Once everything was arranged, the once spacious shed became cramped.
Once wrapped with the pad and quilt, even more cramped.
The Captain bringing back the horse burst into laughter seeing her wrapped like a round ball in the shed, "Cold now?"
"Not cold!"
"So shall we go?"
"Let’s go."
The sooner they get home, the sooner she’d be free.
And so, the horse cart carrying the two, trudged through the snow towards Kao Shan Village.
