Educated Youth in the Countryside: She is the Village's Embroidery Queen!-Chapter 486: Don’t Blame Me If It Turns Out Ugly
The scorching sun couldn’t stop farmers from working with their faces to the soil and backs to the sky, sweat pouring out.
Wen’s mother returned home in the evening, dusty and tired, washed her hands and face, and prepared to cook. Upon entering the house, she found that Yi Chichi had already made the meal.
Chichi even brought out a bowl of cooled tomato and egg soup.
"Didn’t I say I would cook when I got back?"
"I didn’t feel like working today, so I cooked to improve our meals a bit."
Placing the soup bowl on the table, she asked, "Mom, have grandpa and the others come back?"
"They’re back!"
As soon as Wen’s mother heard this, she knew what Chichi intended to do. She ignored her own meal and entered the kitchen with her daughter, "Did you pack all the food for them?"
"Yes!"
I made quite a large amount, with two steamers full of steamed buns, "Mom, could you help me pick out twenty buns?"
"Okay."
Wen’s mother took a basin and packed twenty large buns inside, each solid and heavy.
Given their appetite, three buns per person would be enough.
"Mom, should I save you some fatty meat?"
I made a dish with rich pork, mostly fatty meat. It’s oily and looked intimidating.
Wen’s mother peered over and was instantly terrified, "This is way too greasy, I don’t want it, you can give it all to grandpa and the others."
"Alright!"
I used two pounds of meat, with the stew making about one pound. The remaining pound was enough for the two of us.
So, Yi Chichi didn’t argue further and instead carried the dishes and headed to the barn with Wen’s mother through the back door.
Then, she was scolded by the old man for not knowing how to live frugally.
"Are you reckless? Who cooks two pounds of meat all at once?"
"Hard work requires nourishment,"
Yi Chichi justified confidently, "Besides, we’re not short on meat vouchers."
Not only did Wen Shi send tickets every month, but the Friendship Store also provided fixed vouchers monthly, as did the commune from time to time. She had enough tickets to buy meat.
Seeing the old man about to continue talking, she got anxious, "Eat what’s given, health is the foundation of revolution. It’s not like we can’t afford it, why fret so much?"
The old man was about to speak more but hesitated due to Wen’s mother’s presence and helplessly waved his hand, "Alright, I get it, I’ll eat it all. You two should go back and eat too."
If only it had been like this sooner.
Yi Chichi cheerfully linked arms with Wen’s mother to go home. As she stepped over the threshold, she reminded him, "Eat it all, don’t leave anything. It’s hot, and the food will spoil."
"Got it."
So, the two departed at ease.
While eating together, Wen’s mother recalled the old man’s earlier expression and couldn’t hold back a chuckle, "Chichi, do you know why your granddad reacted that way?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
"... No idea."
She’s not a mind-reader; how would she know what he was thinking?
"Why did he react that way?"
She was curious, leaving her food temporarily.
Wen’s mother laughed, "He worried I might feel uncomfortable."
And, not wanting to scold her, he simply said nothing.
Yi Chichi paused before understanding, feeling both amused and annoyed.
"That old man worries too much."
Indeed, he worried unnecessarily, but it showed he cared, fearing she’d suffer, hence his concern.
"Your granddad truly keeps you in his heart."
Yi Chichi knew deep down, she handed a piece of sweet and sour pork to Wen’s mother, "Mom, don’t worry, I keep you in my heart too."
Wen’s mother laughed silently, aware that Chichi said this to prevent her from feeling jealous.
"No need, you should keep Wen Shi in your heart, or else I fear he’ll feel jealous."
"Let him be jealous; he can manage to be jealous of his mother-in-law."
When the man isn’t around, the mother-in-law takes precedence.
Wen’s mother was speechless, "Just eat your meal."
She then fed Chichi more food to silence her and bring peace to her ears.
Unaware of Wen’s mother’s thoughts, Yi Chichi ended up eating to her heart’s content.
In the late evenings before July, Wen’s mother didn’t let her do the dishes. Bored and full, Yi Chichi wandered around the house and decided to go for a walk to aid digestion.
Upon informing Wen’s mother, she happily agreed, "Go ahead, and have fun."
"Sure!"
Hence, Yi Chichi strolled off to find Liu Lan and the others for some play.
It turned out Liu Lan, Zhou Qiuyu, Wang Nan, and Ge Sujuan had gathered together again, with the children now able to run and jump being taken to the Youth Corps Courtyard by Bai Chen and Wu Yongfei.
Liu Lan’s children joined in as well.
The four huddled together cutting hair, but their skills weren’t great, and they messed up.
Luckily, they were aware of their skills and kept their hands light, leaving room for ample correction.
Upon Yi Chichi’s arrival, a worried Ge Sujuan staring at Zhou Qiuyu’s hair immediately spoke as if she’d seen a savior, "Chichi, quick, help fix Qiuyu’s hair; at its current length, it’s neither easy to tie nor neat when let loose."
Yi Chichi clicked her tongue, "How can each of you be this clumsy yet daring enough to cut hair?"
"It’s too hot in the fields."
Wang Nan’s face was sunburned red, as Yi Chichi picked up scissors and trimmed Qiuyu’s hair, she asked, "Did you not wear a hat while working?"
"I wore it at first but then it got unbearably hot, so I took it off."
"Even if it’s hot next time, don’t take it off. If you get sunburned a few more times, you’ll worsen your face’s condition completely."
"Why would sun exposure ruin my face?"
Concerned about her appearance, Wang Nan was obviously worried.
Ge Sujuan and the others felt the same, as their faces weren’t much better.
"Sunspots, damaged skin layers, pigment accumulation can cause one to age quickly."
Not wanting their good faces ruined by sun damage, Yi Chichi meticulously explained the importance of facial care and how to maintain the skin.
Initially unfazed by sun exposure, after hearing her explanation, they glanced at Chichi’s face, then compared their own faces, feeling a chill permeate their hearts.
"Can our faces be saved?"
Touching her face, Ge Sujuan voiced her concern.
Yi Chichi nodded, "Yes, you’re still young; your skin has good self-repair ability. Just apply Uncle Yaozi’s ointment and avoid sun exposure, and it’ll recover over time."
That’s a relief.
They had the ointment, finding it unbearable when their faces cracked in winter, they bought plenty.
Uncle Yaozi’s ointment wasn’t expensive and worked better than other creams, their homes still had leftover supplies.
Originally planning to save it for the winter since their faces were no longer cracking, now it seemed they had to use it.
Soon, Qiuyu’s hair was fixed.
Yi Chichi cleaned the hair fragments from her neck, "Okay, who’s next?"
"Me."
Ge Sujuan went first, settling into the chair as Zhou Qiuyu stood up, with a request, "Chichi, I want to change my hairstyle."
Yi Chichi looked at her face shape, "Alright, how about short hair?"
"Sure."
"But let me say this first, if it turns out ugly, don’t blame me."
"I won’t."
You can’t expect too much from a free hairdresser, moreover, Yi Chichi’s skills were trustworthy.
"I trust your skills."
Yi Chichi chuckled warmly, "Alright then, I’ll do my best to make it look good."
Ge Sujuan gave her full trust, and of course, she would return 100% of her skills in return.
