Ensnaring his Dark Moon-Chapter 228: Questions
Esme’s wary expression dropped at his words. She always thought she had exceptional hearing. She did not expect him to be like that.
She glanced at him suspiciously but his face did not give anything away.
Before she could ask another question, there were knocks on the door.
Aleister snapped his fingers and the door was opened.
The two sturdy men stepped inside first holding an exquisite round table and two chairs. The beautiful gold vine carvings on it caught her attention a bit before she glanced at the maids who started arranging food on the table which was set beside the window.
Soon, more maids entered the room and in the blink of an eye, the table was filled with various dishes.
Esme did not know whether it was because this was heaven but she felt like even the water was sparkling or maybe it was because of how ruffled she was.
If the people were curious about her and Aleister, they did not show it on their stoic faces. Either they were used to seeing their Prince with a new woman everyday or they were just that stoic.
Everyone emptied the room and closed the door.
Aleister pushed himself to his feet as he approached the dining table which was beautifully set.
He pulled a chair for her, ’’Come,’’ he said.
Esme quietly went to take a seat, maybe this would be the opening for her conversation.
He pushed the chair back and snapped his fingers.
The light from the candles was gone.
The room turned dark, leaving only the starlight glistening on the crystal chandeliers.
’’What was that for?" she asked him, dumbfounded.
’’Let us eat in the dark,’’ he said calmly taking a seat on the opposite chair.
At other times, Esme would have felt angered by his actions but for some reason, his calm voice and those words stirred something inside her that made her shut her mouth.
She did not know what he was up to.
’’You said that I can ask you anything,’’ Esme said as she picked up the glass of wine.
’’Start asking,’’ Aleister leaned back on the chair.
She glanced at him doubtfully before she opened her mouth to ask, ’’Why were you not blessed when you were born? And why now? Why three days?’’ she let the questions slip past her mouth despite knowing how intrusive she might have sounded.
But there was nothing to lose here. If he found her offensive, he could stand up and walk away and if not, he could keep sitting there and feed her curiosity.
"So many questions,’’ Aleister leaned forward as he looked into her eyes, ’’It is good to know that you are trying to get to know me better.’’
Esme’s mouth turned a huge ’o’.
Aleister’s gaze shifted to her lips, full lips that had a sheen on them from her constant licking. That mouth...
He sighed and before she could spew some hatred-filled words, he answered her questions, ’’You must have heard that my mother was a mortal, a human.’’
Esme nodded, ’’I have heard.’’
’’I grew up there in the mortal realm and my father was unaware of my existence.’’
Esme blinked. The way he said it with ease made her hold her breath.
She did not know what it was like to have a father and mother but if it was anything to go by then was he not hurting? Why did he sound so nonchalant?
’’This blessing ceremony is a disguise. I was injured and I was losing control over my powers,’’ Aleister sighed, ’’And hence this whole thing was orchestrated to stabilize my condition.’’
Just like Luciana had said, ’’You are telling me this despite knowing that I can hold this against you...’’ she mumbled under her breath. If the blessing ceremony was so necessary for him then all the five main gods’ powers were as essential.
He was confiding in her like he was not wary of her. Like if she ran away from this whole thing just out of spite to harm him, he would not mind.
’’If you want to have my life, I will hand it to you without you even needing to lift a finger,’’ Aleister’s eyes sparkled.
’Thump’
Esme ignored the rebellious skip of her heart, ’’I don’t want anyone’s life,’’ she curled her mouth in disdain, ’’It’s even bothersome to hear something like this from a stranger. So strange.’’
Aleister chuckled, ’’Then let’s say I was not serious about it.’’
While his words seemed serious, his eyes however had no conviction.
’’Are you healing?" Esme asked him as she took a sip of the wine to divert her attention.
’’I have healed a long time ago,’’ Aleister said.
Esme frowned.
’’This is just a way to stabilize my powers,’’ And lessen the effect of Marilyn’s curse if that is possible.
But Aleister left the latter part unsaid.
’’Then... Then..’’ Esme blinked, ’’Who injured you?" From what she heard, he seemed to be powerful.
Who could hurt him?
Aleister smirked, ’’I will tell you only if you exact revenge on my behalf.’’
The corner of her lips twitched, ’’We are not close enough,’’ she sipped her wine, letting the sweet taste swirl in her mouth.
The man grabbed her wrist, ’’Eat. Don’t keep drinking like that.’’
She pulled her hand back and placed the glass down, ’’I don’t want to eat,’’ Esme pushed herself to her feet, ’’I am not hungry.’’
Just as her words dropped, she walked past him but before she could go far, he wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her onto his lap unapologetically.
Her eyes widened and her heart thudded at his sudden movement.
’’Have you been surviving on wine all this time?" he mumbled, almost in an inaudible voice.
But she heard him anyway, ’’Why do you ask?" she whispered, looking for any expression on his face that could explain the reason she was not able to pull away from him when she should have thrown a tight slap across his face for the audacity, ’’Are you certain that we were not familiar with each other?"
