Chapter 300: Legend of firefly forest

Luciana and Cardan left the Enchantment forest before dawn.

A few guards were left behind to protect the flower even though it was not needed anymore.

According to their calculations, the Duke must have escaped by this time.

When they reached the northeast, Luciana helped Cardan sit near a tree.

He leaned back on it, his face was slightly pale.

He insisted that he was fine but Luciana did not believe him.

Her blood provided him comfort but his internal injuries were probably too deep to be healed so fast. Otherwise, his appearance would not have been as such.

She knelt in front of him and rubbed his shoulder, ’’Does it hurt anywhere?"

Cardan nodded, ’’Will you kiss wherever it hurts?"

"_"

She would have slapped him had he not been looking so miserable.

Cardan coughed knowing that if he pushed her further, she would throw him into the sea.

The sky was still as dark and suddenly something sparkled in the distance. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

’’Who is there?" Luciana was alert.

Cardan pulled her into his arms, ’’Let your guard down, Lucy. Not everything is dangerous.’’

She glared at him, ’’I think there is something. It is not an illusion. Let me see what or who is it," she did not think it was fine to let their guard down. The more alert she remained, the better.

Cardan smiled.

’’What are you laughing for?"

He stretched his hand and a golden ray shot through the wild bushes.

Suddenly, countless fireflies emerged behind it.

Luciana was startled. She had not noticed them until now.

This place...

As Luciana looked around, she was startled.

Under the soft glow of the fireflies, Cardan could not help but admire the look on her face. She seemed a little wary and a little lost. Her eyes always lacked trust in everything yet they had a shine in them as if there was a little hope that she hid behind her unfeeling exterior. The hope to be able to trust, to let herself be free, and to not hold back anymore.

She was a capable woman but in moments like this when he caught her off guard, when she seemed startled by something so small, he found her lovely.

He wanted her to lean on him.

In a moment that terrified him, he realized that forever felt like too short of time with her.

He wanted more.

He wanted lifetimes with her.

’’Lucy...’’

She looked at him as if she realized something. Before he could say anything, she straightened up, ’’I remember now.’’

He pulled her back into his arms, dissatisfied. She could remember everything in his embrace, ’’What do you remember?"

Luciana was about to pull back again when he winced, ’’It hurts,’’ he whispered, brows scrunching in pain.

Luciana remained motionless in his arms and rubbed his chest to comfort him, ’’I just remember that there is a legend about this place.’’

’’Oh?"

’’Look at these fireflies. They are magical,’’ she whispered.

He glanced at the fireflies that seem to appear and disappear at their wish. Although it was not noticeable at first glance but they were not ordinary fireflies.

’’I am not certain about how true this is. But many tales revolve around God Zephyr. This is one of them,’’ Luciana glanced at him, ’’It is said that when God Zephyr was dethroned from the heavens, this is the place he first appeared. And they say that all the creatures in these places were blessed by his magic.

Years later, God turned a woman into a mermaid and married him for the sake of the mers’ bloodline. But he never touched her. She conceived heirs with the help of God’s divine powers."

When Luciana was young, she always wondered why there were statues of God Zephyr everywhere yet his Queen was barely mentioned. And even if there were statues of the Queen, she did not appear like a wife, but just a woman serving the God.

Luciana had mentioned it in her diary which ended up being read by Esme.

But, she never thought that the legend of the firefly forest was true.

Cardan raised a brow, ’’What happened after that?" This God was certainly full of mysteries. And he was crafty as well.

Had it been before, Cardan would have wondered why Zephyr put himself through so much trouble for conceiving heirs. Using divine powers for something like this was not a simple matter and even for the most powerful gods, going against heavenly rules would have its drawbacks.

The children conceived in such a way might or might not survive. If they survived, they could be blessed but it was fate if they inherited the heavenly powers from their father.

Seeing that there were no heirs of the God in Defire and the bloodline of the Kings was selecting capable heir apartments for the throne, Cardan understood that the God achieved his motives. He was able to carry on with the bloodline of the mers but his children were mere mortals.

Or they might have disappeared with him. Some believed that God Zephyr had perished.

But Cardan had his suspicions. True gods were born with the power of the heavens and earth. Unless heaven and earth started perishing, they would continue to exist in one way or another.

A god or a descendant of the god cannot be rid of their immortality unless they were of impure origins.

Even he, as a son of a true god and a witch clan descendant, would not be able to strip his immortality at will.

When Luciana heard his question, she spoke up again, ’’The Queen knew her responsibilities and she was aware that the reason she was created was for the existence of mers. She was meant to carry the bloodline and expect nothing more...’’ As Luciana recounted the story that was told by old storytellers, she remembered how she used to take these things lightly and believe that these were myths.

But after she thought about the tales and statues of the lone God, and even a few statues of the God and his wife where they seemed so aloof from each other, she had different thoughts now.

The Queen was never mentioned. And this place existed.

Every part of the story resonated and it was too much to be just a coincidence.

"But the Queen gradually fell in love with him. The God reminded her of her boundaries and her position. She would stop for some time and would approach him again, intending to move his heart. But over time, she realized that he never had eyes for her. He respected her, and he gave her the crown but he never loved her.

So after the last heir was born, she brought him to this place where he had created her and told him that she had given birth to so many heirs for him. The sea Kingdom was prosperous because the creatures of the sea were transformed into mers, hence becoming their subjects. She reminded him that throughout the whole ordeal, she was by his side. And he must not refuse the only wish she was about to make after decades of their togetherness.

God Zephyr was confused but he told her that he would comply with it as long as it was reasonable. When she said she would not ask for his love again, he was assured and gave her his word.

She asked him to take the life that he had given her. She said that she was exhausted and wanted calm.

She might not have been God’s lover but she was his companion, a friend. He was heartbroken by her words. The subjects pleaded for her to reconsider her decision but she just smiled as she looked at her husband. He complied with her wish and with a wave of his hand, her life was extracted. Her body shined as it started disappearing and all the magical fireflies rushed over the sea to give the first lady of the mers a proper farewell."

A/N: Just a small casual reminder. Do you remember the first time adult Esme and Al met when she was going to Visteria? This is the same location~
