Chapter 299: Is he alive?

Duke Maverick did not realize Rowan’s intentions until he was pushed out of the dungeon. He was in disbelief and denial yet he could not do anything about it.

Rowan pushed him out of there but he did not consider that even after his sacrifice, he would not be able to escape safely. He could not even walk. Even if he hid himself in some corner, for how long could he do that?

The sense of powerlessness overwhelmed him as his body fell.

He closed his eyes, the remaining hope that he had slowly left him.

Suddenly, a tingling sensation seeped into his hands, spreading through his body.

His eyes snapped open as his body started floating in the barrier between the sea and the dungeon.

Duke Maverick was shocked. He tried to move his hands but his movements seemed restricted.

He looked down and found his wheelchair disappearing from his vision as it fell deeper.

Just as he was about to try to move again, his body jolted.

A distant voice rang inside his head.

Duke Maverick closed his eyes, trying to listen to those words amidst the growing pain inside his body.

’Maverick, I am returning every bit of life essence that I had taken from you. I am passing half of my powers for the time being. Protect yourself. Escape.’

Maverick’s eyes snapped open.

The voice was familiar but he could not remember where he heard it.

Life Essence?

Powers?

What was the mysterious person talking about?

Amidst his bewilderment, a strange incident occurred.

Maverick felt the pain in his legs. The same legs which had not felt a thing in a decade.

Soon, the pain disappeared. He raised his hand and a purple glow sparkled in his hands.

That was the magic that was inherited by the descendants of the royal family. Even though he had lost his powers, there was a small trace of them left in his body. So, he never stopped cultivating in hopes that one day he will get his powers back.

And now, his magic was purer than it had been when he lost them.

But suddenly, he saw a trace of golden and black around the purple glow on his palm.

Maverick was taken aback by the sight but he assumed that it had something to do with his mysterious savior whose voice he heard a moment ago. He did not dwell on those thoughts any longer.

He had to save Rowan.

Maverick looked up at the dungeon which was like a broken tower.

The restriction on his body disappeared and before he realized it, he was falling again.

Maverick pointed his hand towards the dungeon wall and a purple arrow formed on his palm, shooting towards the wall with an extended rope.

It did not take long for him to reach the height of the tower.

Hearing the chaotic noises inside, Maverick moved away from the door and broke the wall instead, afraid of hurting Rowan who might still be shielding the door.

The sight that greeted his eyes made his steps falter.

Rowan was on the ground, in a bloodied mess but he still had his sword in his hand as he blocked the door.

Corpses of a few soldiers were littered around yet many of them remained standing/

’’Rowan!"

Hearing the voice, Rowan slowly raised his head. Blood trickled down from his forehead, ’’Your Grace...’’ his voice was barely above a whisper, ’’Leave... Leave...’’

Upon seeing him, half of the guards rushed towards him while the other half moved to attack Rowan again.

Duke Maverick was taken aback when he sensed their strange powers. But even before he realized it, his hand moved.

And within a wave of his hand, all that remained was the corpses of the guards that seemed to have been obliterated by him.

Duke Maverick glanced at his hand quietly for a moment.

’’Cough...’’

The moment he heard the voice, he rushed towards Rowan and squatted in front of him, ’’Come with me. The royal physicians can save you...’’

As he spoke, he proceeded to hold Rowan’s shoulders.

Rowan shook his head, ’’Your Grace, your legs...’’ his voice grew weaker.

’’I am unsure of what happened but I feel some strange powers in my body. We can talk about this later. We need to get you treated.’’

’’Your Grace...’’ Rowan leaned back on the door, his gaze unfocused, ’’They were not humans. If they were, I could have handled them... My body.... seems to be burning from the inside. Their magic.... was not ordinary...’’

Duke Maverick knew how capable Rowan was even though he did not possess any magical powers. When those guards were about to attack him, he felt their strange powers.

He looked at Rowan who was sitting in a pool of blood, ’’Keep quiet. I will take you back,’’ he proceeded to lift him.

Rowan shook his head with a soft smile, not letting his body budge, ’’The Lord... is not an amicable person. He does not have many friends except me. Nor does he have... a subordinate like me. I... need to serve him... when I meet him there...’’

’’What are you talking about? Rowan...’’ Tears rolled down his cheeks as he tried to keep Rowan awake.

’’Your Grace, farewell...’’ Rowan closed his eyes.

Even though he was covered in blood and wound, a serene expression remained on his face as the soft heaving of his chest gradually stopped.

Duke Maverick closed his eyes, falling back on the ground. His hand slowly slid off Rowan’s shoulders.

He did not how long he sat there until he heard the sound of approaching footsteps.

Duke Maverick’s eyes snapped open as he turned around.

A few men stood in front of him, dressed in black.

Their ensembles differed from the people who were guarding the dungeon.

’’We are here to escort you out of the sea,’’ One of the guards stepped forward.

Duke Maverick did not respond to them.

Suddenly, another group of men appeared. The man who was probably their leader stepped forward, ’’Your Grace, we are sent by Lord Aleister. Please come with us.’’

Duke Maverick’s expressionless face finally showed an expression, ’’Who did you say?" his voice was hoarse. 𝑓𝘳𝑒𝑒𝓌𝘦𝘣𝘯ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝑚

’’Lord Aleister.’’

The guards of this dungeon only mentioned about some heir apparent and Esme. Nobody addressed him by his title. Nobody mentioned Aleister.

Even if these people were suspicious, Duke Maverick knew that they had no reason to lie and pretend when they could have just killed him.

And the mention of Aleister stirred hope in him.

’’Al... my child... he... he is alive?" Duke Maverick stammered.

Aleister’s guards nodded.

The dull ache in Duke Maverick’s heart intensified. He slowly turned to look at Rowan’s body. He did not even get to know that his friend was alive. He...

Duke Maverick still remembered the time when Aleister brought back Rowan with him from the battlefield. Others might think Rowan was just a subordinate to the young Aleister, but he knew that Rowan was a friend and brother that Aleister never had.

Aleister had a bad temper and Rowan had to act like a calm strategist everytime a situation arose.

Even the King was tired of their antics and mischief.

’’His body... Take his body carefully,’’ Duke Maverick whispered as he tried to stand up.

His legs had regained the lost sensation yet he did not seem to have the strength left to stand.

Aleister’s guards shot a smug look at Cardan’s guards before one of them approached Duke Maverick to help him up. The man passed a pill to Duke Maverick, ’’Your grace, please take this. You will be able to breathe in the water.’’

Maverick accepted it.

Cardan’s guards came to carry Rowan’s body after glaring at Aleister’s guards.
