Duke Maverick looked at her, ’’You did not get along well with her in the past,’’ his eyes narrowed, ’’You were at each other’s throat in the courtroom.’’

Both the woman did not even consider the King’s presence when they argued with each other in the court. There was no way she would be here to help Esme.

’’You had feelings for my nephew. You...’’ Duke Maverick gazed at Luciana accusingly.

"_" Luciana was speechless.

She was embarrassed by the mention of her argument with Esme back in the royal court.

But his following statement left her baffled, ’’Your Grace, I did not have feelings for the Prince. I just found him beautiful and wanted to have him,’’ she corrected him immediately. Why was this man framing her by saying that she had feelings for his nephew? If Esme heard this, that woman would bury her alive in the depths of the sea.

Duke Maverick was taken aback. What did she mean by she found his nephew beautiful and wanted to have him?

’’Lucy, don’t you find me more beautiful than brother now? Or do you still want to have him?" Nobody realized when a certain suckerfish approached Luciana to cling to her.

Cardan felt grumpy. He was intending to rest some more but then she had to mention his brother’s beauty. He could not help but rush over to show his face, just in case she forgot his unparalleled appearance.

Duke Maverick’s eyes nearly bulged out and dropped into the sea when he saw the face that haunted him in his nightmares for the past year.

Looking at the sheer horror on Duke Maverick’s face, Luciana elbowed Cardan. The man was already wary of her but thankfully, he had not noticed Cardan up until that point. Yet, Cardan just had to show his face at this moment.

’’You... You...’’ Duke Maverick took a few steps back, almost looking like he was considering drowning to death.

Luciana pursed her lips, ’’Your Grace, let me...’’

’’You colluded with him. You...’’ The man’s gentle face looked so pitiful that Luciana felt guilty for no reason.

Cardan was annoyed. He glanced at the guards standing behind Duke Maverick.

One of the two guards stepped forward and hit the back of his neck causing Duke Maverick’s movements to be still.

Aleister’s guards were alerted.

They quickly caught the man as he fell unconscious.

Luciana gaped at the guards in disbelief before she turned to glare at Cardan.

Cardan smiled coyly, ’’Lucy, what happened?"

’’Are you acting innocent now?" she narrowed her eyes.

He cleared his throat, ’’What did I do? They knocked him out,’’ he pointed his hand towards his guards, ’’Why are you blaming me? I am innocent.’’

The guards: "_" Your Highness, how could you...?

’’You were eyeing them sneakily. Do you think I am blind?"

Cardan pressed his fist to his mouth as he coughed twice. It was a troublesome thing that his woman was more sly than him.

He quickly raised his other hand with a weak expression on his face and reached out to rub his chest.

’’You... Are you not feeling well?" Luciana approached him.

’’I feel bad. So weak. Lucy, hold me,’’ he stretched his hand pitifully.

Luciana was helpless against him.

Cardan smiled when he noticed that she was no longer angry, ’’My powers are back,’’ he held her wrist and pulled her closer to him. He pointed his chin towards Duke Maverick, ’’He was already startled by us. It is better to not confuse him further lest he loses his mind.’’

When she thought about it, Luciana felt like Cardan was right about it. When Duke Maverick met Esme and Aleister, he would naturally know that they were not out to harm him, ’’He is not hurt, is he?"

’’My Lady, I hit him rather gently,’’ The guard who hit Duke Maverick earlier spoke up.

Luciana was assured.

She glanced at Rowan’s body, ’’Shall we take him back to Daven Castle? He grew up there. I wonder if he would like to be buried there.’’

Cardan followed her gaze, ’’We are taking him to Defire with us. As far as I know, he has been a loyal aide on my brother’s side since he was young. He would like to be where my brother is.’’

Luciana felt like he was right.

A thought crossed her mind and she sighed helplessly.

’’What else is bothering you now?" Cardan stroked her hair indulgently.

’’We found the Duke but I am afraid we cannot make it back to Defire in time,’’ Luciana frowned, ’’No matter how fast we travel, it would take us more than two days to go back. And the Duke has a weak constitution, we cannot let the journey affect his body.’’

Cardan sighed, ’’Don’t worry about him.’’

She glanced at him in confusion.

’’Although he is not accustomed to it, but his body is not that weak anymore,’’ When the confusion on her face deepened, he smiled, ’’Don’t you find something different about him?"

When she heard that, Luciana turned to look at Duke Maverick. She had been occupied by many thoughts earlier but it was only now she realized that the man was standing on his legs. He had walked earlier. And his appearance had changed drastically.

The last time she saw him in Daven’s castle, his eyes were hollow and sunken, his skin had shriveled up and he looked deathly pale. But right now, he looked his age. A handsome and gentle royal in his early 30s.

Although Cardan was the one who prompted her to look at the Duke, he could not take it when she stared at him for so long. He cupped her face and smoothly turned her head towards him.

His gaze screamed ’Look at me. I am more good looking’.

Cardan did not feel guilty when she glared at him. His Lucy had a fondness for pretty things. Even though she might not find anything as beautiful after she was blinded by his beauty but in the past, she had once been interested in his elder brother. Now, Maverick was his brother’s Uncle. Naturally, Maverick had his own charms after he got rid of his sickly appearance.

So, Cardan did not want to take a chance.

Luciana had no idea about the thoughts in his head or she might have spurted a mouthful of blood if she knew that he was worried she would fall for Aleister’s Uncle.

’’I returned his life essence back to him through the spell,’’ Cardan spoke up after a moment of silence.

Luciana nodded in understanding. No wonder.

An earth-shattering roar reverberated in the forest, and the sand under their feet sank.

The corner of Cardan’s lips tugged up as he looked at the white horse running towards them.

Luciana was bewildered, ’’Did the horse just roar...’’ Her words trailed off when she noticed the horse transforming into a huge white beast, ’’Leo...?"

Her head snapped at Cardan, ’’How long have you known it for?"

’’When I first saw it in the forest behind Crystal Castle, I had my doubts. And the horse was abnormally fast but I was not certain.’’

’’But how could it be?" Luciana glanced at Leo who stopped a few steps away from her, ’’He could not transform into his real form after he killed the witch back then.’’
