Chapter 315: Explain it all

Jeremiah was about to retort when his eyelids suddenly grew heavy. His gaze started losing focus.

Before he could try to comprehend it, his gaze turned blank as he looked at Esme, ’’My Lady,’’ his voice was monotonous.

Anyone under the influence of mind control would presume the person controlling their mind to be their Master and Mistress whom they were supposed to obey.

Esme looked at him calmly, suppressing her inner urge to kick him a few times.

After all, she could barely control Rezeph’s mind for a few seconds and according to what he had told her, she had already mastered her ability to a good extent.

But Esme had no idea how powerful Jeremiah was so she had to use this opportunity to extort everything cleanly, rather than waiting for him to blabber gibberish once again. She could not afford for him to regain consciousness before she found answers to her question.

’’Why did you target Nevesray?"

’’For you.’’

’’For me,’’ her brows tugged together as she rephrased her question, ’’How did you discover my existence?"

’’Painting.’’

Esme narrowed her eyes. Usually, he babbled about unnecessary things but now he was giving her one worded answers. If she was not certain that she was controlling his mind, she would assume that he was playing her.

Inhaling a deep breath, she said, ’’Explain it all,’’ Surprisingly, she was not feeling any discomfort that she felt in her head while controlling Rezeph’s mind. Rezeph had said that if she could control his mind for even a few seconds, then no one else in the Sea court would be a bother to her.

And it seemed like she would be able to control Jeremiah’s mind for some time easily.

The improvement in her powers that had seemed negligible around Rezeph became apparent around Jeremiah.

Jeremiah stood frozen, not saying a single word as if her question did not register in her mind.

Esme frowned, ’’Explain everything that led you to target me’’

Jeremiah’s mouth closed for a moment before he started to speak, ’’There were other candidates for this position....’’

As it turned out, there were countless mers who had stepped up to be the King’s heir apparent. But Jeremiah outdid them in terms of capability. Some who were more capable than him were defeated by his wits and underhanded tricks.

When the young jeremiah moved to the Crystal Castle as the heir apparent, his aim was never that position. He always desired the throne, to be the most supreme being in Defire. And for that, he had long started practicing black magic to be the most powerful existence in Defire.

As the years passed, there was one thing that relieved Jeremiah. It was the fact that the King had no children who could be shake his position. And the King did not seem to have interest in any woman which relieved Jeremiah further.

But that illusion shattered when the teenage Jeremiah once visisted the King’s bedchamber and came across a painting of a beautiful woman. To avoid being discovered, he left before anyone spotted him. But after Rezeph left for one of his ventures to the human lands in a disguise, Jeremiah took the oppurtunity to sneak inside his bedchambers once again. Although he could not find much, but he discovered the origins of the lady in the letters exchanged between Rezeph and that lady. And the last letter revealed that the lady was expecting. After that, there were no further letters from her so Jeremiah could not be certain if the child and lady were still alive.

Over the years, he had built his secret forces throughout Defire.

And most of all, Marcus Norwell, his elder brother and the King’s trusted aide worked for him. So, it gave him another useful pawn.

He dispatched some of his people to Nevesray to look into information of their queen. Anastasia Reis. But he discovered that she had disappeared years ago. Some said she was dead while others believed that she had eloped with her bodyguard.

It was a relief to Jeremiah until he found that she had left two children behind. Arlan Reis and Esmeray Reis.

But his spies in the Royal castle told him that Arlan Reis was Adrian Reis’ illegitimate brother and to prevent unrest in the royal family, Anastasia had kept it a secret from the younger and older generation and gave him the identity of being her younger child. Only a few selected people were aware of the secret.

With that, Jeremiah’s attention was locked to the only person left in the picture. The real possible threat to him. Esmeray Reis.

He wanted her dead. Cleanly and without leaving any evidence behind so there will be no one threatening his position.

But the sea had laws that all of them had to follow. They could not execute one of their own without a plausible cause or a valid order. Although Jeremiah was the heir apparent, he did not have any real power back then. So, if he executed Esme, he would perish for violating the laws of the sea.

So, he could only join hands with the King back then, who was also Esme’s uncle. The man was greedy and vein. So, when Jeremiah incited him against Adrian, he readily moved his claws to Adrian.

But what he did not know was the real reason Jeremiah targetted Adrian.

Jeremiah wanted to know if born to a human and mer, Esme was a mer or a human. If she was a human, she was no threat to him because a human could not become the Queen of Defire. He could kill her or let her go and it would not change anything.

But if she was a mer... it would be a threat.

So, the reason behind torturing Jeremiah to trigger Esme into transforming into her true form. The transformation of a half human into a mer needed preparations and it needed to be done in a full moon night.
