Chapter 327: Old grudges

Not a single strand of her hair was out of place. She looked magnificent with every step she took towards him.

Jeremiah could not help but clench his fist and tilt his head down to look at the ’Esme’ he was holding in his arms.

She looked the same. Beautiful. But like a doll.

He was aware that it was because of the herbs that he gave her. Or at least, that was what he had believed till this moment.

’’You are an impostor,’’ Jeremiah looked at the woman who was holding Leo in her arms. That beast barely went closer to anyone other than Rezeph or Esme and after Aleister came, Jeremiah had seen that thing clinging to the man. ’’You are an impostor,’’ he screamed, refusing to accept what was right in front of his eyes.

How? How could it be possible? How could there be two of them?

Esme smiled, ’’Am I?"

The Esme in Jeremiah’s arms raised her head and mirrored Esme’s smile, ’’Or am I?"

All the helplessness and pain from that beautiful face was gone. There was no longer a daze in those grey eyes.

Jeremiah flicked the woman off his grip as if his arms were burnt, ’’Who are you?" he looked at her in disbelief. Who did he marry if not Esme?

Jeremiah calmed himself down and tried to think about it.

And the more he thought, the more he believed that the person he married was none other than Esme. He saw her mermaid form.

Anything can be faked but not a mer’s primordial form. She even had that pearl accessory around her shoulder that was gifted to her by the King. He was there when it was presented to her and those pearls had engraved themselves on her body in her mermaid form. Unless she cut it off her skin, nobody would be able to have it and even if she did that, it would leave ghastly scars on Esme’s body.

Jeremiah looked at both the women standing in front of him, his gaze tracing their collars and a relieved breath escaped his mouth when he did not see a single scar on them.

He refused to believe it.

These people were trying to trick him.

They must be trying to scare him by bringing an impostor.

Jeremiah looked at the ’Esme’ in her bridal attire, ’’Stop pretending.’’

She looked straight back at him, ’’Who am I, you asked?"

’’I know you are Esme,’’ Jeremiah narrowed his eyes.

’’Am I?" The woman smiled, ’’Are we?"

A light flashed and like a mirror, Esme’s face started cracking until the whole body dispersed into dust, and in its place stood two women who were not unfamiliar faces to Jeremiah.

Rose and Rory.

The maids he had bribed to help him put the herbs in Esme’s room to weaken her senses.

Rory. The servant who was unwilling to scheme against Esme was captured by his men.

And she was standing right beside her sister without a scratch as if she had never been abducted by his people.

’’Who are you?" Jeremiah breathed, looking at the twins in disbelief.

’’We are the twins of the Finche family. The family which once used to flourish when our brother was alive.’’

’’The birth of twins is a mystery amongst the mers is rare. And even if they are born, some of them do not survive to see the light of the day while some are born powerless.’’

Rose stepped forward, ’’But then there are twins like us who are born with exceptional powers. Rory and I can merge to create an illusion that we want, we can create the illusion of a place, a demon, or any creature all too well.’’

Jeremiah looked at them in disbelief.

’’I let you abduct my sister right in front of my eyes so that you would not become suspicious when you do not see me around Lady Esme on the wedding day,’’ Rose continued, her words resounding in everyone’s ears, ’’We made you believe that I was enticed by everything that you offered us.’’

’’Why would you marry me?" Jeremiah gritted his teeth.

’’You got married. Not to Lady Esme, not to us,’’ Rory smiled, ’’But to an illusion. You were hitting us but we did not have a bruise,’’ she raised her hands where Jeremiah had been gripping her tightly, ’’Because that was nothing but an illusion.’’

’’Why... You...’’ Jeremiah frowned. He offered these women everything they desired then why?

’’Why do we turn our back on you at the last moment?" Rose looked at him as if she could read his mind.

Jeremiah’s fingers clenched into fists.

’’Because we never stood with you in the first place,’’ Rory whispered, ’’We came to this castle to work as maidservants with only one goal in mind. And that was to end your life.’’

Jeremiah looked at them, bewildered with shock.

Both the sisters exchanged a meaningful glance.

’’The Finche family had an elder son, our elder brother, who was part of the race to the throne. But to succeed in your evil motives and become the heir apparent, you killed him when you saw him outshining you,’’ Rory inhaled a deep breath before she continued, ’’Some grudges cannot be forgotten just like that, My Lord. We never had an opportunity to touch you. We thought we would never have an opportunity to exact our revenge until yesterday when we overheard your conversation with my Lady outside her bedchambers. After you abducted me, Rose pretended to put the herbs in Lady Esme’s chambers. Once your man who was keeping an eye on us left, Rose told her about our past, our powers, and our motives.’’

Jeremiah looked at Esme in disbelief.

The smile gradually disappeared from Esme’s face as she glanced at him, ’’For a year, you manipulated my memories, you made me believe things that were not true and even after I recovered my memories, I despised you. Other than that, you were not significant enough for me to feel anything for you.’’
