Chapter 328: You knew...

’’Then why did you do it? Why did you go against me, Es? So what if you have saved him?" Jeremiah pointed his fingers at Duke Maverick who had been quietly witnessing the scene since the beginning, ’’Your kingdom is under my captive. The moment I want, I can make Nevesray go up in flames, along with your beloved family in it.’’

’’Why do you think I bothered putting this pretense with you?"

Esme words made Jeremiah’s heart skip a beat, ’’What do you mean?"

’’While Luciana went to rescue Uncle in Visteria, Aleister had long sent his people to Nevesray to ensure everyone’s safety there. We heard about Duke Maverick’s return but we had yet to hear from Aleister’s men which is why we needed some time.’’

Esme stroked Leo gently. Leo jumped down from Esme’s arms and went to a nearby pillar to rub his back there. ’’And this wedding gave us the time that we desired,’’ Esme looked at Leo helplessly before she continued speaking.

Jeremiah staggered a few steps back.

’’How does it feel?’’ Esme stepped closer to him, gazing into his defeated eyes, ’’To almost climb to the top, only to fall when you are about to reach the peak?" If it was just her, then she would have let it be. But he touched every person she held dear and wanted her to play along with him. A man like him... should not blame anyone for being ruthless.

Yesterday when Jeremiah had dragged her to the forest to talk to her, Aleister had returned to his room right after that and his guards informed him that Esme was waiting for him inside his room.

When he could not find her, he started looking for her and the fire in the forest brought him to the place where Jeremiah was talking to her.

And by the time she went back to his room, they did not even have to discuss anything for him to play along with her and fool Jeremiah.

Jeremiah’s eyes turned red.

’’Why?" He screamed and pounced on Esme.

Esme did not even flinch as before he could reach her, a golden light enveloped him, shoving him back to a pillar.

Jeremiah’s face scrunched up in pain as he glared at Aleister. What he did not realize was that Aleister had never once raised his hand.

A hateful glint crossed Jeremiah’s eyes as he raised his hand.

’’Don’t bother,’’ the cold tone broke the silence inside the throne room.

Jeremiah raised his head to glance at Rezeph, ’’Do you really think of yourself as my King? Do you think you are worthy of commanding me? Without these people backing you up, what existence do you have?" he spat.

’’Hah...The existence of being the supreme one.’’ Elder Hall spat, barely able to take the audacity of that hateful man anymore. Initially, he had been confused as to why the King was not helping Esme out of the situation she was in.

But when the revelations were made, he realized that the King must have known about it all along. The only reason he was frowning and struggling when the fake ’Esme’ was in pain was because of the face she had. But at the end of the day, he held himself back and did not meddle in Esme’s plans.

But it was different for Elder Hall.

The old man could tolerate a lot of things in the world. As an immortal elder of the heavenly court, there was nothing that he had not seen. No trifles were worth his attention.

What he could never tolerate however was someone demeaning his god.

Even after God Zephyr had fallen from his throne, he was still the god whom they revered.

And it was unacceptable to him when pests like this questioned their god’s existence.

’’You practice black magic? Even your goddess, the most powerful witch had to resort to filthy tricks to take him down. Who do you think you are?’’ Elder Hall’s words were laced with sarcasm.

Other than Aleister, Esme, and Ruby, every person inside the room wore a shocked expression on their faces when the meaning behind those words started dawning on them.

Esme looked at Aleister with a small frown on her face, ’’You knew.’’

Aleister cleared his throat.

’’But you never told me.’’

’’I never got the chance to,’’ Aleister explained, in an attempt to coax her.

Before he was about to come to Defire, his father told him that it would be hard for him to pursue Esme because she was ’his daughter’.

Aleister had his doubts since then because his father had seen Esme only once. Then how did he know whose daughter she was?

That tone of his told Aleister that he looked up to the person he was talking about.

During Aleister’s stay in heaven, he had never known his father to look up to anyone other than the fallen god, God Zephyr, his old friend.

Then Aleister came to Defire and saw how Rezeph treated Esme like his daughter.

That reminded him of the way Rezeph had taught him how to control and use his divine powers. How could someone without divine powers know how to use them?

Esme’s unnatural powers. Be it the rainstorms that her tears caused or be it the hellfire. All of them were divine. The way half-mers never regained their lost memory and Esme did it. She remembered all of it without a single harm coming her way.

Aleister had always known it.

’’You had chances." Esme pushed the man away when he inched closer to her.

Aleister pursed his lips. It was not that he did not have chances to tell her about it.

He had all of the chances to tell Esme about her father’s identity.

But the said father was his father-in-law so Aleister had to do a long consideration.

If Esme was upset, then he would be able to coax her in a day or two, or a week or two at most.
