Chapter 348: Wall of Illusion

But as she stood there facing the biggest demon, the biggest shadow that had lurked in her heart while growing up, frightening her every moment, Luciana did not feel the tremble of her heart as she usually would have. There was an unprecedented sense of calm.

Looking at the man who was reduced to such a pathetic state that he could never raise his hand, never overpower her like he once did, the shadow in her heart seemed to have dissipated.

’’You don’t know, do you?" Marcus Norwell stopped laughing as he glared at her viciously, ’’Your bitch of a mother was just as meddlesome as you, poking her nose in everything she chanced upon. She witnessed that beast sacrificing young mermaids while learning black magic and she dared to go against him. She thought Jeremiah was a young boy who could not differentiate right from wrong. So, if she taught him a lesson, he would come back to the right path but you see, your uncle was a beast even back then."

An ominous feeling crept into her heart.

"He performed black magic on her, his half-raw, half-learned magic was more ruthless than any proficient art could ever have been. Your mother was internally tortured till her very last breath. She was so tortured yet she was not permitted death. She just laid there, lifeless and in pain till she was all skin and bones before she took her last breath,’’ Marcus Norwell let out a disgruntled scoff, ’’Good that the bitch died. I told her to stay put. But she would not listen to me. Serves her right...’’

Luciana’s eyes turned bloodshot.

She turned around and walked out of the cell, leaving Marcus Norwell shocked, ’’Where... Where are you going? D-Don’t leave...’’

She stopped in her tracks and nodded twice.

’’Don’t torture his body," Luciana said.

Marcus’s eyes lit up with hope.

’’Torment his soul before he dies.’’

The six words fell like a sledgehammer on Marcus’s heart, sealing his fate. Disbelief crossed his features as the magical prison walls started building and he could see the shadows creeping up around him.

They were there. Those shadows were always there. They had just hidden themselves in the dark when Luciana came yet she knew that they were there and Marcus knew that they were there.

"AHHHHHHHH!"

The agonizing screams echoed in the dungeon again as Luciana moved out of the cold cell and walked towards the warmth of the fire torches that were held by the shadow guards who had accompanied her inside.

Her face was aloof and her eyes red as she strode past them. There was not a hint of hesitation in her steps.

The men exchanged a glance between themselves. They were used to cruelty but from what they knew about mortals, mortals cherished familial bonds like that of a father, mother, or sister and brother. Yet, the woman their Prince had asked them to protect did not flinch twice before commanding her to inflict more pain on her own father.

And surprisingly the Prince’s men heeded to her orders and immediately executed it. The shadows who lived in the dark and did not bother with anyone other than the Prince actually obeyed a lady’s order.

Unbeknownst to them, those were some of the shadow guards who had accompanied Cardan to the mortal world hence they knew Luciana’s position in Cardan’s heart.

They did not have to be able to understand what they were supposed to do.

And they certainly did not want to dig their own grave by offending Luciana.

On their way out of the dungeons, Luciana’s heart was in a haze. Tears welled up in her eyes but every time she tried to shed them, they dried up right there, making her feel even more pathetic. The constant reminder of her obeying her mother’s murderers, of her not seeking revenge for the unjust death of her mother pricked her heart.

She had known.

She had always felt that there was something strange about her the gradual decline in her mother’s health. She had that feeling inside her but she was way too young back then so she had ended up dropping the thought, believing that she must have remembered wrong but did she?

She did not. She did not remember it wrong at all. And it was too late by the time she realized it.

As Luciana was walking, overwhelmed by her thoughts and the myriad of emotions that consumed her, she seemed to have seen a familiar figure.

She blinked and stepped in that direction.

’’My Lady, where are you going?" the guards quickly chased after her.

But Luciana’s footsteps did not seem to stop as she walked faster, ’’Cardan, you said you won’t come,’’ she placed her hand on the man’s shoulder, her voice hoarse, ’’Did... Did you perhaps come looking for me in the dungeon?"

The man turned around and Luciana’s hand froze.

’’My lady, is there something I can help you with?" the man asked, noticing the presence of Cardan’s shadow guards behind Luciana.

Luciana retracted her hand when she realized that the person standing in front of her was just a prison guard.

Why... Why did she approach him then? How could she see Cardan?

Was she muddle-headed?

Luciana pressed her fist on the side of her head, retreating a few steps, ’’I want.. to rest,’’ she whispered before turning around to walk away.

The shadow guards exchanged a look before chasing after her.

Once they were gone, Cardan stepped out from behind a wall and stood in front of the prison guard whom Luciana mistook for him.

’’The wall of illusion. Disperse,’’ At the whisper of his command, the guard froze for a moment before his body relaxed. There was no visible change to him but if Luciana was there, she would have noticed the way Cardan’s silhouette detached from the man’s body before scattering in thin air.

The guard immediately dropped to one knee when he noticed Cardan’s presence, ’’Your Highness.’’

Cardan turned around and walked inside the dungeon.
