Chapter 356: I lead my destiny

Silence descended in the forest following Marilyn’s departure.

Luciana pressed her palms to her mouth as she started inching away from the place she was hiding in. Helpless tears rolled down her cheeks as her chest heaved up and down. It was as if someone had dug a clenched fist right inside her heart, she could feel the hollowness and the ache creeping in. And at that moment, she wanted nothing more than to hide.

To hide from the whole world. To disappear for days or months or even years till she did not have this desperate urge to ask whoever wrote her fate.

Why her?

Why every time she trusted someone, they had to take that trust from her, wrench it terribly and throw it back on her face when it was beyond recognizable?

Why did it have to be her?

The existence of such a pathetic question in her mind made her feel ashamed of herself.

Luciana Norwell was never this pathetic. She did not beg people to stay with her nor did she cry over men.

And she was unwilling to get on her knees and spill her tears for some man.

Luciana removed her palm from her mouth, muffling her sobs as she violently rubbed her palms on her eyes. She wiped her tears again and again but the more she wiped them, the further they intensified.

Helpless, she slumped on the ground and hugged her knees as she cried silently. Her shoulders shook as her long blonde hair framed her face.

’’How long do you intend to stay here?"

Luciana froze.

Eyes filled with tears, she pursed her lips in fear that she might sob. She did not move from her position, lowering her head even more into her knees till her blonde hair formed a curtain around her face.

’’Luciana, I am talking to you,’’ Cardan glanced at the woman who was hugging her knees tightly as she sat on the ground. Even when he talked, she did not bother to move as if she did not have a care for his words.

Luciana refused to say anything.

’’You not only followed me secretly but now you refuse to talk to me,’’ Cardan frowned, ’’What do you want to prove by doing this?"

Luciana’s eyes widened in disbelief. She glanced up at the man almost immediately the moment he finished his words.

Cardan was stunned. Tears streamed down her cheeks and her defiant eyes were filled with a sense of vulnerability that Luciana Norwell never showed, or she barely did. As she stood up, her dress cascaded down her body, taking along a stream of pearls that rolled away in all the directions.

’’Followed you secretly?" Luciana’s voice was hoarse. She wiped her tears with the back of her palm, refusing to acknowledge them as they rolled down her cheeks again, ’’Secretly? Do you even have the audacity to accuse me after everything that you have done?"

’’You... You are afraid of water and I was scared that you would panic if you go out alone. That you would be uncomfortable. I was worried for you, Cardan. That is until I saw you disappearing right in front of my eyes,’’ Luciana smiled bitterly, ’’Did you want me to sit still and not get to the bottom of it? So that you can fool me? Fool us all?"

’’The time you spent with us, the memories we made together was all a part of a conspiracy?" Luciana stepped towards him, ’’I was a part of your conspiracy? To approach Esme, to purify your divine powers, to....’’ she paused, unable to get the words out of her mouth. It felt like a thorn was stuck in her throat, ’’To get close to her, you used me?"

She was in your heart all along? It was her whom you wanted? And I was just a tool for you to reach her?

Luciana wanted to ask yet she could not get those words out of her mouth.

’’Why?" Luciana reached out to hold his arm but one inch away from touching him, she retracted it, backing away.

She looked at the man who stood there unmoved, still with that straight face as he did so. He did not seemed to be bothered about giving her any explanations.

Luciana smiled, mockingly. She did not know if she was mocking him or mocking herself.

’’You went to the heavenly realm and took me with you. The purpose of your visit... was it to meet your mother?" she met his gaze.

’’Yes.’’

Luciana nodded, ’’It was not a dream, was it? Those dark shadows that haunted me when I was sleeping in your room. I was not dreaming.’’

’’Yes.’’

’’Your mother was toying with me and you knew it.’’

’’Yes.’’

Luciana inhaled a deep breath before she opened her mouth to speak, ’’I understand.’’

Cardan met her gaze.

’’She is your mother. It is hard for you to detach yourself from her. I understand.’’

His brows tugged together.

’’But she is no one to me and so are you,’’ Luciana whispered as she looked dead into his eyes, ’’You people are insignificant to me. And I refuse to be a part of your ploys. I had a good time with you, Cardan but so do I with any other man.’’

His jaws clenched.

’’Lucy.’’

’’Luciana. That’s how you should address me from now on. You are not bad at doing that, I assume since you did it moments ago."

Cardan sighed, ’’It was dangerous for you to follow me like that. You... I was worried sick, Lucy. I...’’

"Shh... Don’t bother,’’ She stepped closer to him as she raised her hand to wipe the remaining tears on her face, ’’These are the tears of pity of losing something I found worth my attention but then, it happens. I believe I will find better men in the future.’’

As she turned to leave, she tilted her head to the side and looked at him from above her shoulder, ’’I am Luciana Norwell. I lead my destiny, my destiny doesn’t lead me. Whatever it was between us, it ends here.’’

A/N: Long time no see, everyone. I just want to take some time to throw sone light on a few things.

First, for the irregular updates, the past few months have been hectic for me. Uni life can be very tough, the exams, the hustle, living in dorms and everything but I am trying my best to strike a balance. I would have given up on writing honestly given how tiring it gets but then I see you people around, your motivating words, your kindness and then I just know that it’s worth it. Even if I write slowly, even if it exhausts me, you people are so inspirational that you make me feel like all of this is worth it.

Secondly, a new journey is about to unfold in this book and I can’t wait to take you along with me~

Thirdly, I wish for nothing more than you all being happy and healthy in your lives. Because throughout a span of years since I started writing, I have had a bunch of sweet readers like you and I feel like I have seen you grow with me. You people will always mean a lot to me and you should know that! <3
