Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Dr. Nash, How Much Longer Are You Going to Look?

Silas Prescott was a gentleman, humble, those jet-black eyes calm as still water.

But it was precisely this side of him that made Chloe Nash feel afraid.

She always sensed there was danger lurking here.

Him letting her join this project—wasn’t this just Silas Prescott’s excuse to make her stay?

Thinking of such a possibility, Chloe’s expression remained indifferent. "President Prescott, I can only stay here for another two months at most. You’d better find someone else—I’m afraid I’ll slow down your research progress."

Silas’s tone was gentle. "With my experience in this field and Dr. Nash’s help, I believe we can finish the initial design work for this project in two months. Dr. Nash, you don’t need to worry."

With things said to this extent, if Chloe refused again, it would make her seem deliberately difficult.

She curved her lips lightly. "Alright. Just let me know directly if you need any help from me, President Prescott."

Hearing her agree, a fleeting hint of satisfaction flashed across Silas’s eyes, but it was gone in an instant.

He made a ’please’ gesture. "Dr. Nash, please take a seat. I’ll go over the project plan with you."

He handed a document to the director. "I’ll need a research office in the hospital. There’s lots of work in the early stages that I need to discuss with Dr. Nash."

The director smiled and nodded. "No problem, I’ll arrange it for you right away. It will be ready to use within a week, at most."

"We’re working together with the hospital on this research. When the project succeeds, I’ll provide it to your hospital for free."

One of these high-tech robots costs several million.

Providing it for free would save the hospital a huge sum of expenses.

The director, excited, stood up at once. "That’s wonderful! Dr. Nash, we’re counting on you. I’ll schedule fewer surgeries for you, so you can focus entirely on the research with President Prescott. You two go ahead and discuss—I’ll have someone set up your lab."

Once the conference room was empty, Chloe dropped any pretense of unfamiliarity.

She raised her brows at Silas. "Why me?"

Silas’s face was expressionless. "Because you’re a genius in medicine. And with me, a genius in technology, I believe we can develop an intelligent robot that will ease the suffering of medical workers."

He made it sound so official that Chloe couldn’t find a single point to argue.

Although in her heart, Chloe felt certain Silas’s real purpose wasn’t this at all.

But if she refused, she’d definitely arouse Silas’s suspicion.

Chloe Nash kept her tone mild. "Thank you, President Prescott, for trusting me. Let’s get started."

She picked up the document and began to read carefully.

Seeing his plan succeed, Silas couldn’t help but curve his lips in satisfaction.

He didn’t believe that, working with his Sienna day in and day out and letting her see him at his best, she wouldn’t fall for him all over again.

The two worked late into the evening, until lightning and thunder rumbled outside.

Only then did Silas set down what he was doing, looking tensely out the window. "I forgot there was a thunderstorm warning tonight. I need to hurry home."

Chloe: "It’s dangerous to leave now. Why don’t you wait until the thunderstorm passes?"

"Julian is terrified of thunder. Every time it strikes, he hides under the covers and cries his heart out—no one can comfort him."

Chloe’s chest tightened. "Why is that?"

"When his mother was pregnant with him, she went through an explosion. It traumatized him, and his autism is connected to that too."

Hearing this, Chloe felt shaken to her core.

Pregnant, and lived through an explosion.

Wasn’t that exactly her?

Could Julian’s mother also have gone to a war zone?

Impossible.

There’s no way Silas would let his son go through something like that.

Just picturing Julian sobbing under the covers made Chloe’s heart clench in pain.

Without hesitation, she stood up. "I’ll go with you and see him."

Outside, the torrential rain had already started.

With just one umbrella between them, they walked from the hospital lobby to the parking lot, both soaked through.

Silas handed Chloe a towel. "Dry off quickly, don’t catch a cold."

"I’m fine. Let’s hurry—if the water keeps rising, the roads might get jammed."

When Chloe entered Julian’s room, he was trembling, hiding under his quilt.

He kept calling, ’Mama.’

Quickly, Chloe went over and scooped his small, frail body into her arms.

She comforted him gently. "Julian, don’t be afraid. Mommy’s here. Mommy will protect you."

Hearing her voice, Julian slowly lifted a corner of the blanket, revealing his wet, teary eyes.

A choked sound escaped his throat. "Mommy, I’m scared."

He threw himself into Chloe’s arms, his body still shaking uncontrollably.

Chloe bent down and kissed his forehead, softly saying, "Julian, how about Mommy sings you a song?"

Julian lying in her embrace nodded.

Chloe’s gentle, melodious voice filled the room.

"The dark sky hangs low, bright stars follow along, fireflies fly, fireflies fly, who are you missing..."

This was the song she often sang to her son back in the war zone.

She worried that the constant fighting would affect her baby’s development; every night, when it was quiet, she would gently caress her belly and sing to him.

Moments ago, Julian had been trembling, but with the song, his mood calmed instantly.

He nestled against Chloe, slowly closing his eyes.

Not long after, he was sound asleep.

Seeing this, Lucy Rhodes was surprised. "Chloe, you’re really Julian’s savior. He’s never calmed down this quickly before."

Chloe stroked Julian’s head with a trace of heartache. "I’ll talk to the psychologist about this, see if they can help with a plan. Otherwise, he’s suffering too much."

"Exactly. Every time he cries for ages, it hurts the whole family. Do you think his mom even cares? Leaving him with this issue—I bet she wasn’t a very good mother."

Chloe forced a bitter curve to her lips.

Compared to Julian’s mother, she thought she was even worse.

At least, in the crucial moment, she saved her son.

Yet she let her own child leave this world alone.

Lucy Rhodes brought her a change of clothes. "Chloe, lay Julian down. I’ll keep an eye on him. You’re soaking wet—go shower and change, or you’ll catch a cold."

Chloe gently laid Julian down again, and kissed his forehead once more.

Seeing that he wasn’t startled anymore, she took the clothes and made her way to Lucy’s room.

But as soon as she opened the door, she saw Silas coming out of the bathroom.

The man was wearing only a pair of black sleep shorts, his upper body completely bare.

Sensual, tight abs with beads of water trickling from his wet hair.

Seeing this, Chloe was rooted to the spot, as if she’d been filled with lead, unable to move.

Her mind suddenly flashed with memories of her and Silas together, their bodies intertwined.

That powerful waist—every time, it left her crying helplessly.

Recollection made Chloe’s cheeks flush with heat, her heartbeat quickening with nervousness.

Just then, a deep, husky voice sounded in her ear.

"Dr. Nash, how much longer do you want to stare?"
