Entangled in the Night: Unable to Escape Him-Chapter 17: Chloe Nash and Sienna Paxton’s Photo Together
Hearing that voice, Chloe Nash gripped her knife and fork a little tighter.
Even after five years, she could still recognize that person’s voice.
It was her best friend, Tanya Thorne.
Ever since she went abroad, she hadn’t contacted anyone; Tanya had looked for her on every social media app, but Chloe forced herself not to reply.
She was afraid Silas would follow the trail and find her.
Chloe tried to stay calm. She ignored the shout, acting as if nothing had happened, and picked up a napkin to wipe Julian’s mouth.
Across from her, Silas and Lucy Rhodes both looked curiously over their shoulders.
They saw a girl running towards them.
Her eyes seemed to be welling with tears.
She ran to Chloe’s side, her voice a bit hoarse: "Sienna, where have you been all these years? I’ve tried so many times to find you, why haven’t you answered me?"
Only then did Chloe slowly raise her head, looking over at Tanya.
Her voice was flat and calm: "Are you calling me? My name isn’t Sienna. Maybe you’ve got me mixed up with someone else?"
When Tanya saw Chloe’s face, all her emotions froze in an instant.
She stared at Chloe for a long time.
Then she bit her lip and said, "Sorry, I saw you sitting with Sienna’s brother and thought you were Sienna. Your backs look so much alike."
She nodded apologetically at Chloe, then shifted her gaze to Silas.
"Sienna’s brother, have you heard from Sienna?"
Silas knew who she was—Sienna’s best friend. When Sienna left, he’d gone to her house looking for her.
Afraid she might be in cahoots with Sienna, hiding information, he’d even had her watched for a while.
But nothing unusual had happened.
Silas shook his head, "No."
Tanya’s eyes were a little red: "It’s been five years—where did Sienna go? No one’s heard a word from her. I’m so afraid something happened to her."
Seeing how much she cared about Sienna, Lucy Rhodes felt a pang of empathy.
She patted Tanya on the shoulder. "Don’t worry. If we hear anything about Sienna, we’ll let you know, I promise."
Tanya nodded, "Thank you. I still have some of Sienna’s things. If she comes back, I want to give them to her."
When she said that, Silas’s expression tightened. "What things?"
"Just her stuff from the dorm. After graduation, I took it back home for her. I figured I’d give it back when she came, but I haven’t been able to reach her."
Hearing that, Chloe, who’d been sitting in her chair, nervously clutched at her clothes.
Her things from the dorm.
Other than textbooks and some odds and ends, there shouldn’t be anything important... right?
Chloe’s mind was racing, searching for fragments of memory.
Suddenly, she remembered something very important.
She and Sienna had taken a photo together a few days before they left the country.
She’d never found that photo afterward.
If that photo was stuck inside one of those books and Silas saw it, he’d very likely suspect her real identity.
The thought made sweat break out on Chloe’s forehead from nerves.
Silas was just as anxious as she was.
If there were any of Sienna’s things, maybe he could find some clue.
He immediately stood up. "I’ll go with you."
Seeing him get up, Chloe quickly stood as well.
"We’re done eating too. Let’s all go together."
Julian wiped his little mouth right away and climbed down from his chair.
He clung tightly to Chloe’s hand, as if he never wanted to be separated from her.
The group got in the car and headed toward Tanya’s house.
The whole way, Chloe clutched her phone in a tense grip.
She kept trying to think of a way to get out of this crisis.
The car stopped at a particularly run-down apartment complex.
Silas’s car was too wide and long to drive in at all.
It was tricky to go forward or back.
Chloe had a quick idea: "There’s nowhere to park here. You guys wait here, I’ll go get the stuff—anyway, it’s a girls’ dorm, easier for me."
Silas didn’t refuse. He nodded, "Thank you."
With his permission, Chloe’s tense nerves finally eased a little.
She followed Tanya upstairs.
To avoid exposing herself as Sienna, she didn’t dare say another word to Tanya.
As soon as she got the stuff, she rushed back downstairs.
On the first floor, she found a quiet corner and started searching through the pile of books.
There were too many books—it just wasn’t possible to flip through every single one in time.
She could only try to recall which ones were most likely and search those.
But after searching for quite a while, she still didn’t see that photo.
Did she not put it here, or just not find it?
Chloe’s eyes stung with anxious, unshed tears.
That photo was like a ticking time bomb. If she didn’t find it, one day Silas was bound to discover it.
She was so focused on searching that she didn’t notice Silas had come up behind her.
The man’s dark gaze watched her frantic movements.
Chloe wasn’t someone who overstepped boundaries. This was Sienna’s stuff—by rights, she shouldn’t even be touching it.
But now she wasn’t just touching; she was searching through it like mad.
From her expression, he could tell she was looking for something—and whatever it was, it made her nervous.
Silas frowned slightly and said in a low voice,
"Dr. Nash, what are you looking for?"
Chloe was so tense that hearing his voice made her jolt.
She immediately threw the things in her hands aside.
She jerked her head up—straight into Silas’s fathomless eyes.
There was doubt and suspicion in his gaze, making Chloe feel completely on edge.
Her heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would leap out of her throat.
When did Silas get here?
Had he seen her frantic search?
The thought made Chloe blink nervously, her voice trembling as she spoke.
"I—I just saw a cockroach in here. I was afraid it’d scare Julian in the car later."
It was normal for things from an old building like this to have cockroaches.
As excuses go, Chloe’s wasn’t unreasonable.
But whether Silas bought it or not, she couldn’t tell.
He squatted down too, picked up a random book and flipped through it, then lifted his eyes to look at Chloe.
His tone was inscrutable. "A cockroach made you cry?"
Chloe shook her head quickly. "No, I wasn’t crying."
"Then why are your eyes so red?"
As Silas spoke, he kept staring at Chloe’s eyes, as if he didn’t want to miss even the smallest expression.
It made Chloe feel like she was sitting on pins and needles.
Her lashes trembled and she said, "There are fresh flowers at her place. I’m allergic to pollen—I just sneezed a few times."
She’d tried to come up with a random excuse, not realizing she’d unwittingly revealed an important detail about Sienna.
When Silas heard this, his gaze deepened even further.
"You’re allergic to pollen too?"
