Eternal Life Starts from Tai Chi-Chapter 92: You Only Held Back a Little Bit?
Although the Steward of the Medicine Hall and Pharmacy rarely managed affairs, he would still exercise his authority if he saw something he disliked—you’d either be kicked out of the Medicine Hall and Pharmacy or get a harsh scolding!
Furthermore, Wang Gang was a rather old-fashioned man. Despite his External Cultivation, he was already over fifty and unable to break through to become an Inner Master. For most people, sixty years was a full lifetime.
It was because of his advanced age and low energy that he rarely managed things. However, his medical skills were said to be superb. He could handle all sorts of difficult illnesses and injuries and had even refined many notoriously difficult Elixirs.
Heeding Yang Chan’s reminder, Zhao Yi began to speak in the most formal terms possible. This earned him a few words of praise from Wang Gang, who then went back inside his room.
"That scared me to death!"
Only after Wang Gang had disappeared did Zhao Yi let out a sigh of relief. If Wang Gang had heard what he said just a moment ago, he definitely would have been scolded, and that wouldn’t have been good at all.
No one wants to be singled out as an example.
"Luckily, you reacted quickly. Otherwise, it would have been trouble."
Zhao Yi added, "I never expected Wang Gang to show up just then. Normally, he rarely leaves his room. He usually stays overnight in the Medicine Hall and Pharmacy. His meals and any medicinal herbs he needs are delivered to him, so he almost never has to go outside."
Within the Cyan Yuan Sect, an Intermediate Pharmacist’s status and position were quite high.
"You’d avoid trouble if you spoke less. Careless words are the root of disaster, after all."
Yang Chan gave him a pointed reminder. Zhao Yi was overly familiar and talked too much. If he ever got into trouble, it would almost certainly be because his mouth had offended someone.
"I know, I know."
"Let’s not talk about that. Have you heard? They’ve started signing people up for the trip to Tan City."
Zhao Yi waved his hand dismissively, changing the subject.
He had discussed this with Yang Chan before. Plus, a lot of news about Tan City had been coming back lately, so of course he was concerned.
After all, if a group was heading to Tan City, some of the Pharmacists would surely have to go with them to provide medical aid.
"I saw people heading over on my way back. What’s up? Are you thinking of going to Tan City, too?"
Yang Chan asked in return, seeing that Zhao Yi had brought it up.
Pharmacists didn’t lack Cultivation Resources, but that was only true for those who had just comprehended Power. Once you reached the External Refining stage of Cultivation, your need for various medicinal ingredients skyrocketed, and the supply wasn’t unlimited. Pharmacists might get a little more than the average Elite Disciple, but not by much.
Being able to perform Alchemy and prepare their own medicines saved them a great deal, but even that wasn’t enough to fully support their Cultivation needs.
Take Zhao Yi and the others, for example. The only reason they were trying to refine the Lantian Jade Refining Pill was because they didn’t have enough Cultivation Resources.
Besides, the Elixirs refined to aid External Cultivation were also quite expensive.
That was why so many people in the Sect volunteered for missions that took them off the mountain. It was a great way to acquire more Cultivation Resources.
And among those missions, the one concerning Tan City offered the highest rewards, along with a chance to gain even more benefits on the side.
Those who had previously followed Sect Leader Liu Xuan and the Elders to attack the Three Major Sects had plundered plenty of riches. Aside from a few special items the Sect required, they were allowed to keep whatever else they obtained.
Even if they did have to hand things over, they would receive handsome rewards in return, which was why everyone else was green with envy.
Yang Chan was a case in point. After his last mission off the mountain, he had used up all the rewards, herbs, and Contribution Points he’d earned. This had allowed him to cultivate peacefully for over six months, constantly taking various herbs to boost his progress. It was only recently that his resources had started to run low.
However, his recent success in refining the Lantian Jade Refining Pill, and selling a portion of the batch, had relieved that pressure. He didn’t need to be as desperate as the others.
Tan City was teeming with experts. If a Grandmaster decided to launch a sneak attack, there was a good chance he could be the target.
The Three Major Sects had already sent assassins after him back in Taiyu City—something he never would have anticipated before he went. Therefore, Yang Chan still had no plans to leave the sect’s mountain.
After all, Murphy’s Law was a powerful force, and he had no desire to test it.
"Not planning on it. I’d rather just stay here on the mountain and treat injured disciples."
Zhao Yi shook his head. The rewards for off-mountain missions were high, but so were the casualty rates, even for Pharmacists.
He had gone on an off-mountain mission once before, back when he was still a Pharmacist’s Assistant. He had witnessed firsthand a Pharmacist being targeted and killed in an enemy ambush. That experience left him with little interest in going on any more of them.
Another reason was that he had just received a Lantian Jade Refining Pill from Yang Chan, which would last him for a while. He was also planning to try refining them himself, so he had no desire to leave the mountain.
"Pharmacist Yang, what about you?"
"Never mind, stupid question. You just successfully refined the Lantian Jade Refining Pill, so you’ll definitely be spending this time refining more Elixirs."
Zhao Yi looked at Yang Chan and asked, but then he quickly answered his own question.
He had seen Yang Chan buy a large amount of medicinal ingredients from the Medicine Hall and Pharmacy, obviously for the purpose of Alchemy. Why would he need to go on an off-mountain mission?
At this, Yang Chan just smiled without saying a word.
’If it were voluntary, of course I wouldn’t go. But if an Elder appointed me like last time, I wouldn’t have a choice.’
’I wouldn’t even be able to use any little tricks this time. After all, you can’t treat people like they’re idiots.’
’Something like that "accident" could only happen once.’
Not long after, the two of them began to examine the injured disciples who had come for treatment.
...
"Pharmacist Yang, are you sure you *only* went a *little* easy on her?"
Zhao Yi eyed the beautiful Pharmacist’s Assistant that Yang Chan had mentioned recruiting yesterday, his suspicion growing. He seriously doubted Yang Chan had gone just ’a little easy’ on her—it was more like ’a ton.’ The standards must have been incredibly lax. Otherwise, how else would he have picked a disciple with such ’outstanding qualities’ as a good childbearing figure and a body that promised her kids would never go hungry?
This made him even more suspicious of Yang Chan’s motives. After all, Yang Chan was a man—a young man, at that. It was perfectly normal for him to have such worldly desires.
"I didn’t go easy on anyone. Han Bingyu’s performance was simply more outstanding, which is why I chose her to be my Pharmacist’s Assistant."
Yang Chan naturally denied it outright. ’How could a man of my noble character be swayed by such worldly desires?’
’I have no such worldly desires. I am simply a man of class and principle.’
"Heh heh!"
Hearing this, Zhao Yi’s gaze grew deep and knowing, and he began to laugh with a strange expression. It was obvious he didn’t believe a word Yang Chan said.
’After all, he knew better. A man’s words were nothing but sweet-talking lies.’
’And he was a prime example.’
’He just never expected Yang Chan to be the same type. He’d really never seen that side of him.’
"Our main job in the Pharmacy is treating injured disciples. You can start by observing what the other Pharmacist’s Assistants do. When an injured disciple is brought in later, you can assist me with the treatment."
Yang Chan ignored Zhao Yi and spoke to Han Bingyu, who was standing to the side.
