Chapter 40: The Regressor vs The Heavenly Principle

As soon as he unleashed the second form of the Sunless Sword Art: Sun-Sinking Eclipse, a thick black fog suddenly obstructed his vision, and the surroundings began to crack like mirrors.

Crack! Creak! Crash!

With a deafening sound, the space shattered, and Gray found himself somewhere else — on a battlefield!

The battleground was soaked in blood, explosions erupted here and there, and the sky had been consumed by a crimson darkness. The sun was eclipsed and split into two halves.

Gray gasped, stunned by the strange sight.

’A Vision.’ Gray thought.

However, this wasn’t the first time Gray was seeing a vision. Back in the Ashborn Isolation Chamber, he had also witnessed many bizarre visions when he wielded the Sunless Sword. So, he realized that what he was seeing now was another vision caused by the sword.

Gray clicked his tongue inwardly. He had expected to be dragged into a vision, but using the Sunless Sword was his only option if he wanted to sever the spell the tentacle creature had cast on the Dean.

Moreover, he didn’t know whether time in the outside world had stopped or if he was simply frozen in place. This made him uneasy.

If his body had stopped moving while time continued to flow normally, he could be struck down by his enemies before even realizing it.

Gray sighed.

Then, Gray’s eyes fell on a person standing on a pile of corpses, panting. The man had crimson hair and eyes and was covered in blood.

Gray’s eyes widened as soon as he saw the crimson-haired man’s face.

’ Julius!!’

The man standing on the pile of corpses was none other than Gray’s supporting Celestial being, Julius von Legolant.

Gray quickly realized this was a past event. Gray had seen many visions when he used the Sunless sword. Although most of them he didn’t understand whether the vision was of the past or the future, there were some where he could realize which time frame the vision belonged to.

For example, Gray once saw a vision of a man using the Sunless sword art, and people called him Aether von Noctvain.

Later, Gray realized that he would be his descendant.

Gray had also learned the Sunless sword art demonstrated by Aether von Noctvain, who created the Sunless sword art by researching the Sunless sword.

Thus, Gray deduced that this time he was seeing the past — a past where Julius von Legolant was present.

Right then, the sky above tore.

Shiiiin

A heavy white light came through it and illuminated the whole battlefield.

Then, a mysterious being appeared. The being was so bright that Gray couldn’t look at him, and his eyes started burning.

’Ekkg!’

Gray quickly looked downward to avoid the overwhelming light. He couldn’t even see the being’s shape or size, as the light was so strong.

Just then,

"Heavenly Principle!" Julius von Legolant exclaimed.

The mysterious being that appeared was the Heavenly Principle, the being who reigned over the whole cosmos and maintained its plausibility.

In simple words, he was the law of existence.

The Heavenly Principle spoke with irritation, his voice echoing through the air.

"It’s your 700th regression. Just how many times will you regress for that dead God?"

’700th Regression?’ Gray’s eyes widened. He knew the term regressor, a man who can go back in time infinitely.

’Does that mean Julius is a regressor... and regressing for a dead god?’

Gray’s eyes glimmered with curiosity.

Meanwhile, at the heavenly principle’s words, Julius clicked his tongue. He became so angry that blood started flowing from his eyes, and his veins bulged out.

He then raised his hand, and the millions of corpses on the ground started shaking. Then, black Abyssal energy came out of them, spiraled like a spear, and shot upward.

Clang! Slash! Gssk! THUD! Thud! Thud!

Gray couldn’t see upward because the light was too powerful for his eyes, but since he was looking downward, he saw many white soldiers with white wings falling to the ground lifelessly.

Gray’s eyes widened as he realized who they were:

Angels.

The white soldiers that were falling to the ground lifelessly were undoubtedly angels, although they weren’t how Gray once imagined them to be.

Thud! Thud!

It seemed the spiral spear of Abyssal energy clashed with the angels that the Heavenly Principle had brought.

Then, Julius again raised his hand, and white energy came out of the fallen angels and rushed to Julius’s hand.

The white energy slowly spiraled in Julius’s hand, and he infused highly condensed Abyssal energy into it.

Shiiiiiii....

Then he moved his hands and shaped it into a sword.

’No way!’ Gray’s eyes widened even further. The sword that had just formed was the Sunless Sword — the sword Gray had received from Julius.

Then the Heavenly Principle spoke, "Are you trying to revive your master just so you can atone for your betrayal?" 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

At the Heavenly Principle’s words, Julius von Legolant showed bottomless anger and emptiness. He was about to lash out, but suddenly his eyes fell on Gray.

"!!!!!!"

Gray and Julius eyes met, and both of them froze for a moment.

Gray thought he was seeing a vision, so how could Julius look at him? Isn’t this a past event?

Just then, Julius von Legolant started laughing loudly,

"HAHAHAHAHA."

His laugh was that of a madman.

Then, he shouted like a madman toward the Heavenly Principle,

"HAHAHAHA. THE DISASTER GOD SHALL BE REVIVED. HAHAHA!"

Julius laughed while looking at Gray, as if the Disaster God he mentioned was Gray.

Confusion and questions flooded Gray’s mind, and right then, the space started cracking.

Crack, crack, crack

Gray looked at Julius and saw that he was shouting incomprehensible words and rushing toward the Heavenly Principle with the Sunless Sword, using a particular sword strike.

Suddenly, a system window popped up before Gray, and in it was written:

[Analysing "Formless Sword Art"]

Just then, Countless divine lights struck Julius from head to toe like arrows, and a massive explosion occurred.

Kra boom!

Gray’s vision was slowly fading, but he resisted, trying to see what would happen next — was Julius dead, or would he regenerate?

But the space completely shattered, and Gray’s consciousness went blank.

Zzzzzpppp...
