Chapter 49: Evelaine’s Sacred Blood Lake

Lucien stood beside her, struggling to digest what she had just said.

He gulped, then asked, his voice laced with caution.

"Uhm... why are we going to Evelaine’s grave?"

He looked at her. She was smiling somberly toward the stone door they stood before, then belatedly shifted her gaze to Lucien.

"Ohh, pfft..."

She waved at the door.

"Don’t mind this—it’s merely a mimicry we built to honor her. Her grave is somewhere else."

Lucien gulped again.

"Ah, I see... but somewhere else? Not Evelaine Hollow?"

Gayanna lowered her eyelids half-closed, giving him a "Seriously?" expression.

Lucien shrugged.

"I thought trees grew on corpses of dead gods. Didn’t Valdris say that was how the world came to be?"

"Actually, you’re not so wrong but not so right either. It’s not as simple as that. Evelaine Hollow was where her blood first fell. Before she rested at the northern pole and died, her blood formed an ocean."

Lucien gulped again—this time he felt like he was going to swallow his own throat.

Ossyn’s fossilized body formed trees stronger than bones; Evelaine’s tears formed the ocean.

’My flabber is gasted.’

Gayanna moved toward the door and opened it.

"This is the point where the blood first dropped. So we built a grave to honor her."

The room was lightless, then a small ball of light ignited in Gayanna’s hands. She wielded it like a wave. The white light flew into a cascade of several lines, dispersing through the darkness and multiplying until the place began to brighten, as if stars were being woven from the light.

Lucien stared in admiration of the sleek and mesmerizing art of manipulating light. He also wanted to learn. Sadly, he didn’t know if she’d be open to teaching such things.

He brought his attention back to the room, observing the enclosure.

His eyes slowly widened as the light continued to spread, revealing the vast space of what had looked like it was going to be a small room.

They were literally standing in an underground cavern.

First, what should have been ceilings were a canopy of trees. He would have mistaken the large barks for columns if he hadn’t seen how each ended with an overabundance of leaves that completely shrouded the cave and prevented light from falling inside.

The cavern was wrapped in twilight mist. At its center, a round basin cradled a still pool of sapphire water, so clear it mirrored the soft glow of white light floating toward the canopy of trees. Vines curled along the rim of the fountain, brushing over carved symbols long erased by time.

In the heart of the water stood a lone tree, silver-leaved and silent, its roots coiled around the stone pedestal as if guarding something sacred.

Lucien focused on the water, and particularly the tree. He didn’t need to be told to know what the lake was.

Gayanna smiled so resplendently.

"Beautiful, isn’t it?"

Of a truth, the water was beautiful, and the purest thing Lucien had ever set his eyes upon.

"Yes... it makes me wish I can lay upon its surface and rest without sinking."

Her smile became somewhat pale.

"However, this is the beauty of agony. The lake that formed from excruciating pain. The ancient gods... I don’t know what they did wrong, but I don’t think they deserved what the new gods did to them."

She looked at Lucien, her eyes strong, but hiding a thousand wounds beneath them.

"You are indeed right, Great One. The world has come too far, and it would be wrong to destroy it for a cause we had ten thousand years ago. I’m sure the world has evolved even beyond our control. However, that doesn’t serve justice to what the new gods did."

She paused. Then she extended her hand.

"Bring the Forsaken Sword."

Lucien obeyed. He summoned the golden-hilted sword, his eyes glued to the young lady’s eyes.

Gayanna took it.

"The Forsaken Sword was a prototype, created to slay gods and cut through their machinations. But it is still very weak compared to the complete God Killer set."

Lucien’s eyes widened.

’Wait... this can’t be that moment, right...’

She moved forward with the Forsaken Sword in her hands. Lucien missed when her feet left the ground and hovered slightly above it as she moved forward, gliding gently over the surface of the lake and causing a tender ripple to trail behind the tip of her silver sandals that touched the water’s surface.

She stopped in front of the tree and extended her hand forward, opening her palms.

A golden circle of light with countless runes within it appeared before her palm, followed by another—much larger, and turning like wheels undoing something.

Two of the same weave of circles appeared around the middle of the tree. One flowed upward while the other downward, slowly revealing another form to the tree.

Lucien’s eyes widened.

’It is!’

Floating above the water was a chest plate that gleamed like sunlit marble.

Lucien was already hopping in his head, jumping like a ten-year-old about to receive his birthday gift—a top-tier gaming console he had wished for ever since he was eight.

The chest plate flowed above the waters along with Gayanna, toward him and finally stopped before him.

"This is the God Killer set. The chest plate is the only one we were able to hide when Zilla attacked us. We do not know where the rest of the set is, but we are sure that they are alive. And once you have one part, it will sense the presence of the rest."

[You have entered a Hidden Scenario]

[You have received a Hidden Quest]

Lucien felt all his hope shatter.

He thought he would be receiving an armor and sword set capable of slaying gods... but it was only another quest? And somehow, he kept entering hidden scenarios.

Oblivious to his thoughts, Gayanna continued.

"I will do everything you need me to do—I will support you, I will guide you to the pinnacle of strength, as long as you lend me help when I am ready to avenge my mother’s death."

Lucien’s heart seemed to stop for a moment, his breath caught in his throat.

’What?’
