Chapter 49: Chapter

Being a top actress had its difficulties. There were times when my fame skyrocketed, attracting both good and bad things. Enemies were never far from me.

But I always tried to stay out of people’s way as best as I could. Apart from filming and undergoing different promotions, advertisements, and modeling, I spent the rest of my time by myself in my room, under my thick, soft blanket, watching Love Island or some super spicy reality TV shows that were not too cliché.

When I started acting in this drama, I played the main character, Li Manman. Acting alongside me was Xu Chuan, an A-class actress as well. But compared to my acting, hers was practically child’s play.

She obviously hated me, but I cared less about her and more about finishing the stupid drama and going to sleep. Even when I thought I was finally done and could rest, I found myself back in this ridiculous script. Worse still, it was all real now, and I had to become Su Long, the foolish wife of the male lead.

Though I was actually enjoying myself at this moment, it had become clear that I was not the only one who had transmigrated into this drama.

Xu Chuan was also here... but I was not sure if she knew I was here.

"I want to come along."

Li Manman said as she stepped forward, and immediately I frowned.

"There will be no need for that. You stay here. None of this is any of your concern."

I refused her instantly.

She wanted to steal my shine.

No way I was going to allow that.

"What do you mean by that, Young Mistress? I know I am just a humble maid, but I have a good sense for finding things and people. I am sure I can be of help. Please just let me follow you. I will not cause any trouble."

She pleaded, clearly unwilling to back down.

Just then, the Head Guard stepped out and shouted,

"What are you all still waiting for? Let’s get going!"

"Just let her come. If anything happens to her, she will bear the consequences herself. Let’s go."

Fu Sheng said as he pulled me along.

I still did not want her fake self following us on this search, but there was nothing I could do at that moment.

.....

The rain showed no sign of mercy as we pushed deeper into the forest, the guards’ torches flickering wildly under the relentless downpour. Mud clung to our shoes, branches scratched against our clothes, and the cold night air wrapped around us like an unwelcome presence.

No one spoke much.

The tension was too heavy.

Every passing second only made the unease worse.

Fu Sheng walked ahead, his sharp eyes scanning every corner, every shadow, every disturbance in the wet ground. His jaw was tight, his expression unreadable, but the anxiety radiating from him was impossible to miss.

Fu Tong and Fu Teng were not faring any better, both moving quickly, their gazes restless.

The guards spread out, searching carefully.

But despite all the movement...

There was nothing.

Then —

"I think we should check over there."

Li Manman’s voice suddenly broke through the silence.

Everyone paused.

She stood slightly behind us, pointing toward a narrow, darker section of the forest where the trees grew thicker and the shadows seemed heavier.

The Head Guard frowned. "Why there?"

Li Manman hesitated briefly, then spoke with surprising confidence.

"The ground slopes downward in that direction. If someone lost their footing in this rain, they could have easily slid or fallen."

The guards exchanged looks.

It was... logical.

Fu Sheng narrowed his eyes slightly, studying the area.

Without another word, he changed direction.

"Move."

The group shifted immediately.

As we approached, the terrain became noticeably worse. The ground was uneven, slick with rainwater, roots protruding dangerously from the mud.

And then —

"Wait."

One of the guards suddenly crouched down.

"There are marks here."

Everyone froze.

Fu Sheng moved instantly.

The torchlight revealed disturbed mud, clear signs of something or someone slipping.

My heart began to pound.

Fu Sheng’s voice dropped, sharp and urgent.

"Spread out. Search carefully."

The rain roared louder as the tension thickened once again.

Because finally...

We had found something.

The tension in the air thickened the moment we followed the disturbed trail further down the slope.

Then, without warning, one of the guards halted so abruptly that the men behind him nearly crashed into his back.

"Careful!"

His voice cut sharply through the storm.

Everyone froze.

Before us lay a massive hole carved into the earth, its dark opening wide and jagged, rainwater sliding down its slick edges as though the ground itself had split open.

The depth was impossible to judge at first glance because the darkness inside swallowed the torchlight almost completely, giving the unsettling impression that the pit had no bottom.

For a brief moment, no one spoke.

Even the guards seemed unsettled.

The Head Guard stepped forward cautiously, his expression tightening as he surveyed the scene.

"Shine the torches down."

Several guards immediately moved closer, angling their lights into the hole. Thin beams cut through the darkness, stretching downward, yet for a few agonizing seconds there was nothing visible.

Then suddenly.

"Wait!"

One of the guards leaned forward, squinting.

"I see something...!"

Fu Sheng stiffened beside me.

"What did you see?"

The guard adjusted his grip on the torch, pushing the beam deeper.

"There’s someone down there!"

My heart lurched violently.

Instantly, more torches shifted, every available light directed into the pit as the rain continued to fall mercilessly.

And then

"I SEE HER!"

The shout exploded through the night.

"It’s Fu Li!"

The words had barely settled in the air when Fu Sheng reacted, his body moving purely on instinct as he rushed forward and made to jump straight into the hole without even thinking.

My heart nearly stopped.

Without hesitation, I lunged forward and grabbed him.

"Where are you rushing to?!" I snapped, gripping his arm tightly.

He struggled immediately. "Let go of me!"

"Have you lost your mind?!" I shot back, tightening my hold. "It’s too deep! If you jump in there, we will have to rescue both of you!"

Fu Sheng’s eyes burned with panic.

"That is my sister!"

"And you jumping blindly will not help her!" I fired back. "Look carefully — she has already passed out. We need to pull her out with a rope, a robe, or something long enough. You cannot just throw yourself into a pit like some reckless hero!"

He froze.

Only then did he truly look.

The torchlight revealed Fu Li’s motionless body deep within the hole, barely visible under the rain.

Fu Sheng’s jaw tightened painfully.

"...Damn it."

He turned sharply toward the guards.

"How are we supposed to get a robe in the middle of the forest?"

One of the guards immediately stepped forward.

"I can retrace my steps back to the cabins. I will return quickly."

The Head Guard nodded without hesitation.

"Go. Hurry."

The guard ran instantly, vanishing into the rain-soaked darkness.

While we waited, the tension became unbearable.

The guards began spreading out again.

"If Fu Li fell, Bai Ming should not be far."

The torchlights shifted once more as the men searched through the rain, scanning the muddy ground, the tangled roots, the uneven terrain.

Fu Sheng, however...

Did not move.

He remained at the edge of the hole, his eyes locked downward, his entire body tense, as though stepping away even for a second was not an option.

"Fu Li..." he muttered under his breath.

Minutes passed.

Then...

"Over here!"

A guard’s voice suddenly rang out.

We all turned.

There, not far from the hole, Bai Ming lay motionless on the soaked ground, rain beating mercilessly against her unconscious body.

"She has fainted!"

One of the guards quickly lifted her.

Mud splashed as he carried her back toward us, her drenched figure limp in his arms.

Because now... Both of them were unconscious.

Soon enough, hurried footsteps approached.

The guard returned, breathing heavily as he held out a robe.

"This was the strongest one we could find."

The Head Guard took it immediately.

But the moment he examined it —

His expression darkened.

"...This robe is weak."

The guard lowered his head. "We could not find a thicker one in time."

The rain continued to pour as the silence grew.

"We will have to be careful," another guard muttered.

The Head Guard stared at the robe for a long moment before speaking.

"We are men. Our body weight is heavier. If we attempt to pull her up using this robe, it will tear almost immediately."

No one argued.

Because everyone knew he was right.

Then slowly...

His gaze shifted towards me and Li Manman.

"...Someone lighter will have to do it."

My eyes widened slightly.

And from the corner of my vision, I could feel it.

Every pair of eyes... was now fixed on us.

The head guard finally walked towards us, "One of you would have to go down there to save her."
