The War for The North [72]
Chapter 185: The Crimson Night [13]
Flapping his massive dragon wings, Cassian lunged at the speed of light to pierce Veviron’s scaly chest. His black sword cleaving through the air was radiating death.
But at that moment, Veviron’s eyes shifted away from Cryomara for a brief second and locked directly onto this tiny yet deadly dark speck approaching him.
A roaring, pure, and destructive surge of lightning from the massive body of the dragon instantly targeted Cassian.
Cassian tried to dodge these colossal pillars of lightning by weaving through the air. Every single bolt burned the air around him and scorched his skin. Barely escaping by a hair, he managed to enter Veviron’s range. 𝚏𝕣𝕖𝚎𝚠𝚎𝚋𝚗𝐨𝐯𝕖𝕝.𝕔𝐨𝕞
Sensing Cassian’s presence, Cryomara felt relieved as the burden on him lightened for a moment. But this relief quickly gave way to an unprecedented, savage aggression.
Pushing past his own limits, he lunged forward to sink his claws into Veviron. The freezing stream of ice erupting from his massive jaws reached an incomprehensible size, aimed at shattering Veviron’s scales that were buzzing with lightning.
Veviron was forced to immediately stop targeting Cassian and fell completely on the defensive. While weaving a thick wall of thousands of lightning bolts around himself, his giant, predatory eyes darted furiously between Cassian and Cryomara.
Baring his bloody teeth, Veviron roared with a voice resembling thunder:
"You continue to cause trouble even after death, Kaiser!"
He let out a maniacal laugh as new, far more lethal lightning gathered inside his mouth.
"I suppose I should be glad to be able to kill you one more time, my old friend!"
The colossal lightning blasting from his mouth shot forward to swallow both Cryomara and Cassian at the same time. Cryomara lunged ahead and unleashed his absolute zero ice, beginning to freeze the massive lightning bolts in midair as the two forces suppressed each other.
While the two ancient elements engaged in a deadly battle of balance in the sky, Cassian quietly slipped behind Cryomara’s broad back.
As Cryomara defended them both to the death, Cassian was preparing a perfect, pitch black black hole between his palms.
While all the free mana, wind, and clouds around them were pulled into this tiny yet dense point, the black hole continued to grow at an unbelievable rate.
Realizing the danger, Veviron flapped his wings violently, forcing his way through the ice barriers and launching himself forward with all his might. Leaving Cassian behind, Cryomara roared and shot forward to meet him. As the two ancient monsters grabbed each other by the neck in the middle of the sky and tore into each other’s flesh, Cassian brought the black hole to its final form.
The moment he aimed his hands at Veviron, a gleam appeared in Veviron’s intelligent and demonic eyes. He grinned, baring his teeth, and suddenly changed direction, folding his wings to dive rapidly toward the earth, straight for the crowded streets of the capital.
The dragon hoped that Cassian would cancel this massive attack out of hesitation to kill the innocent people and allies he was trying to protect below. Human dignity and conscience were the greatest weakness of every hero.
Yes, that was what he hoped for...
But what Veviron failed to take into account was that Cassian was no hero.
There was neither hesitation, nor guilt, nor a shred of panic in Cassian’s bottomless black eyes. He continued to focus his target directly on Veviron without missing a single millimeter.
A single word, as light as a whisper, fell from his lips:
"I am sorry."
The colossal wave of Chaos began descending from the sky toward the earth like a devouring tsunami.
Veviron’s arrogant eyes widened with pure panic for the first time. Realizing that Cassian wasn’t bluffing and was determined to wipe the capital off the map with his own hands, he unleashed all his mana and lightning toward the sky with all his might to stop the descending darkness.
An unbelievable sight unfolded in the sky. It was as if their roles had been completely reversed; while Cassian looked like a ruthless demon trying to destroy the north and turn the capital to ash, Veviron had spread his wings like a holy hero trying to protect innocent people from this darkness, attempting to hold the chaos back in the air with his lightning.
The collision of the two colossal powers, Chaos and Lightning, in the sky drowned the world in a deafening noise. Light and darkness writhed to swallow each other.
But before this display of power from the titans could end, Cassian shifted into his smoke form and suddenly appeared right behind Veviron’s massive back.
"Absolute Severance."
When Veviron sensed this unexpected, lethal attack coming from behind, he tried to shift his lightning in that direction, but it was too late. The massive wave of chaos descending from above began to consume the defenseless dragon.
Cassian didn’t stop. He raised his palm toward the sky. The blood of thousands of corpses that had just perished on the battlefield below was drawn up into the air. The giant mass of blood merged in the air to form a piercing, sharp harpoon, and it ruthlessly tore through Veviron’s back, causing a massive explosion of blood.
At the same time, right at the split second threshold where the main wave of Chaos descending from the sky breached Veviron’s final defense and was about to swallow both the dragon and the earth into complete nothingness...
A pure white flash erupted. Using his own body as a shield, Cryomara intervened at the very last moment and forcefully froze and stopped Cassian’s apocalyptic attack with thick layers of absolute zero ice.
Taking advantage of this chaos, Veviron instantly widened the gap and retreated, covered in blood.
While releasing a freezing aura from between his giant teeth, Cryomara locked his massive blue eyes, driven mad with rage, directly onto Cassian. His roar shook the sky:
"WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?!"
Cassian carelessly tilted his head to the side as he lowered the tip of his sword. His voice was colder than the ice around him.
"Can’t you see? I am destroying the enemy."
Cryomara flapped his wings furiously. "THE ATTACK YOU LAUNCHED WAS TARGETING THE INNOCENTS BELOW AS WELL!"
"They are dying endlessly anyway," Cassian replied, his voice chillingly flat. "What do you think living for a few more minutes will change?" A red, ruthless light flashed in Cassian’s eyes.
Cryomara gritted his teeth so hard that his jaw cracked. "You...!"
"Do you think you are the only ones suffering?" Cassian’s voice suddenly rose, his inner dark rage spilling into words for the first time. "Don’t make me sick, Cryomara! Shut your mouth and focus on the real issue in front of you! Or else there will be nothing left of what you are trying to protect in the end!"
Faced with this fearless and rebellious attitude Cassian displayed against an ancient dragon, Cryomara concentrated all his killing intent for a moment and unleashed it upon Cassian. That crushing pressure didn’t make Cassian flinch in the slightest. When Cryomara finally swallowed his anger and turned back to his enemy, Veviron, even Veviron had involuntarily tensed up at the madness of this duo.
When Cassian sliced the air horizontally in a straight line with both hands, dozens of small black holes suddenly formed around them.
But Veviron was not going to wait anymore. Without allowing the black holes to grow in the slightest, he turned himself into a pure mass of lightning and charged at an unbelievable speed. Cryomara tried to stop him with his ice, but Veviron pierced through that ice like paper and reached Cassian directly.
Unlike Cryomara, Cassian didn’t think about the innocents when attacking, and he didn’t hold back. And this made him a greater, more unpredictable true danger to Veviron than even Cryomara.
Veviron brought his massive claw covered in lightning down on Cassian’s head at incredible speed.
Cassian tried to leap backward and get away, using his black holes for defense, but Veviron rapidly shattered those holes with his lightning and began pressuring Cassian relentlessly without letting him breathe.
When the giant claw woven with lightning came down on Cassian’s head once again, the speed was so incomprehensible that even though Cassian used the Storm Heart in his chest at maximum power, his body couldn’t react to this speed.
The blow caught him completely.
Cassian crashed down from the sky to the earth with massive force like a meteor. The moment he hit the ground, Veviron’s colossal surge of lightning discharged into the earth right after him.
It swallowed the place he fell and everyone in the immediate vicinity, friend or foe, in a massive electrical explosion.
When Cryomara angrily attacked Veviron, Veviron dodged again with his incredible speed and dove straight down to the earth, right into the crater where Cassian had fallen.
At the bottom of the crater, Cassian’s body was in pieces.
The black Dragon Heart in his chest was literally crushed, filled with cracks, and leaking pitch black blood. The veins in his body had burst, and his skin was scorched. His mind was clouding over, and he was barely clinging to life by a thread.
With his arrogant smile, Veviron opened his massive jaws and began gathering his final lightning bolts to finish Cassian off permanently and turn him completely to dust.
But exactly at that moment, a massive, thick dome of ice erupting from deep within the earth desperately wrapped around Cassian’s body, trying to protect him.
In that brief second when Veviron roared in frustration and tried to shatter the dome with his lightning, Cryomara descended from the sky like an avalanche and caught up to him.
The two ancient monsters grabbed each other by the throat among the ruins of the capital, over the devastated earth.
Claws, teeth, ice, and lightning... As the epic clash resembling the end of the world began again at ground level, Cassian, writhing in blood on the ground inside the ice dome, was trying to pull his shattered Dragon Heart and body back together inch by inch in agony using his dark mana.
