The Railgun.

Also known as the ’Rays Of Doom’.

It was a gigantic machinery of immense scientific and technological advancement, and it brought down a wave of terror and destruction on some certain parts of Flenor Islands.

It etched an indelible mark of fear into the hearts of everyone present in the Islands because, when even SS-rankers struggled with handling it’s destructively powerful beams that was akin to the sun kissing the earth’s surface at point blank, one couldn’t help but live in ominous trepidation.

Adding to that, despite the Tower’s best efforts to locate it, they were completely unable to do so, forcing them to watch in horror each and every time the ray descended on the innocent inhabitants of Flenor Islands.

Anytime, anywhere, whether early mornings, late afternoons, evenings and even midnights, it would descend, claiming thousands upon thousands of lives.

But then, after a week and a half of its merciless rampage and ravaging rays of total destruction and annihilation, it just disappeared completely. As if it never even existed in the first place.

However, the damage had been done by then and a grim, unforgettable scar was left in the hearts of everyone who had ever witnessed the destruction of the railgun firsthand.

It was only much, much later in the novel that it was revealed that The Monolith were the perpetrators of such vile, despicable and evil deeds.

Finally realizing that they had let so many dark organizations run around scot free for way too long despite it not being their intentions, The Tower commenced an all-out war on every dark organization in the world, be it big or small.

The Railgun was also eventually found in that same war and promptly, it was destroyed without mercy.

Thousands of lives were claimed and the war went on and on, for over a year before, finally, ending in the Tower’s victory.

However, the cost of victory was too much and sacrifices were too many.

With the planet of Arcanora spread thin, most of their rankers wiped out from existence by the chillingly cold and sweet embrace of death, leaving only mostly the normal, un-awakened people populating the earth, an even more insurmountable threat arrived.

The Demon King, His Generals and His many, many minions…

But that’s a story for a much later time.

In the novel still, during Aiden’s school trip, a good chunk of Aquilith Haven, Capital of Flenor Islands, had already been fairly destroyed before they even got to the sprawling and vast archipelago of floating sky islands.

So for them, Aquilith Haven by the time they did get there, was more of place that was undergoing massive reconstruction and needed a lot of helping hands in so many places.

Even the skyport wasn’t spared from the destructive ’kiss of death’ of the railgun and as a result, a teleportation portal was used to make their way over, instead of the airship which they had all arrived in this time.

This was why, from the moment Aiden and Flynn had heard they would be going to Flenor Islands, they had immediately noticed something wasn’t right.

The news of the island’s destruction should have reached them way earlier but when they did decide to search, just to ensure that they weren’t the ones out of loop with the event of things happening in the world, they became even warier.

This state of being was what had caused both Caroline and Ivelia to feel as if their partners were really worried about something they couldn’t disclose to anyone.

So, upon getting to Flenor Islands and seeing how very peaceful it was, Flynn and Aiden, although unsure of how to even locate the railgun in the first place, could only search around the Island for information about the Monolith’s hideout, hoping they could find a way to protect the peace of the island.

That, to be very honest though, was a task that could be easier said than done, especially when considering that The Monolith, one of the more destructive dark organizations, would have at least more than one base.

Knowing fully well that it would’ve also been a suicide mission if they had even so much as tried to infiltrate their base themselves even if they did find some, they had planned to tip off the Tower about the details of the machine being built.

They had hoped the Tower’s rankers would look into it and put a lid atop the whole issue before it escalated beyond what anyone could easily handle.

That was until their group quest came along and few things slowly began to fit into place for the youths.

After finding out that an Eclipsian Prism was being auctioned off, Flynn and Aiden after having discussed about the idea of a replica being created with all their mates, finally took another time later in the day to properly discuss a few theories that they both had.

First was the belief that due to them previously retrieving the ore from the sixth level of the Crystal Caverns, they had definitely caused a big butterfly effect, albeit in a somewhat positive way.

Although they were both completely unsure about it, after adding up why the Monolith and Obelisk spies hadn’t even attacked the hall on the day of the award ceremony and were instead moving round the hall and events district of Section Three instead, a singular thought came to their minds.

It made quite a lot of sense that maybe, the ore was actually what the spies were after but were also unsure of where exactly it was and instead, as they searched around the academy, hoping to find it, gave off the impression that they were up to no good, leading to their deaths.

Now, where it got even more interesting for both youths was that due to them also getting the Eclipsian Prism, something that they never even knew about in the novel, for some reason or the other, the destructive rays of the railgun hadn’t come into play just yet.

And that, signified just one thing to both youths.

’The Eclipsian Prism is quite possibly, a necessary item that is involved in the creation of The Railgun!’

That was the singular thought they had both arrived on and this time, that thought of theirs, really made a lot of sense.

If previously in the novel, the ore had been gotten from the hidden sixth floor of the caverns, then The Railgun would’ve been completed and the novel’s events should have definitely come to pass.

Hence, it made all the more sense that the members of The Monolith were trying to steal another one from the Spina De-La Roas’s auction house.

Although they were still a bit disturbed by how the Monolith and Obelisk might’ve also found out about the ore which was present in their own academy’s Crystal Caverns, they had tried not to read too much into that and had decided to just focus on the task at hand.

So, since the creation of the railgun hadn’t happened, it definitely meant that even if they weren’t completely right about the entire theory they had made up, there was still probably an half-truth to it.

And if that was the case, that was all Flynn and Aiden really needed to ensure that no matter what had happened, they wouldn’t have allowed for the ore to be stolen this time.

And in spades they did, completely deceiving all the members of the dark organization at the auction house and even Magnus, one of the three Arms of Obelisk whom they had never expected to run into.

Yes. That was what the two youths still believed even till now.

Because in the novel, there were only Three arms of Obelisk ever mentioned that the youths had known namely; Rigurd Talos, Quinn Sirius and Magnus Emberclaw.

And they should’ve been right by all means but this iteration, as they had also come to realize, was having a lot of changes happening in the background, so much that even both of them knew and understood that they couldn’t keep up with it.

So both youths, unsurprisingly, currently had no knowledge of the three other arms named Morrigan who was their de facto leader, Ashildr Valkyrie and Evie Lockhart.

However, that was something both of them would find out much later in the future.

But there was one thing they would be realizing quite soon though...

And that was the fact that even despite all their efforts to keep the Eclipsian Prism away from the slimy and vile grasps of The Monolith, they had still gotten their hands on it.

That also inevitably meant that The Railgun, which they had hoped for the prevention of its creation, would also still be created.

It almost seemed like things were destined to go as they originally should have…

But then again, this was a different iteration that was turning out far different from all the previous ones… all as a result of Morrigan, Xavier, and mostly, Aiden and Flynn’s actions.

Midnight, in a brightly illuminated white room with different machineries and high-powered weapons lying around, littering the floor and placed atop the many workbenches present, two men, one still young and the other, gradually reaching old age kept working on the massive railgun.

Each standing on pretty steep ladders placed on different sides of the gigantic weaponry, both individuals were surrounded, albeit on the ground far below them, by a few other Monolith members who were on standby in case the two scientists needed any help.

Moving around them were rotating platforms around various aspects of the railgun, other Monolith engineers welding, soldering and constantly fixing a few things here and there without a break in efficiency and workflow.

Although Edgar had previously mentioned that the railgun would finally reach completion now that they had the ore, it didn’t mean that there still wasn’t a lot of kinks and issues to be ironed out.

Despite also being sure about the weapon’s ability to immediately work on the fly if necessary, there wasn’t any guarantee that it wouldn’t blow up in their faces instead if even just a tiny complication reared its ugly head.

So, it was exceedingly necessary that they took as much time as possible before initiating it’s launch.

Magnus, gently humming as he worked on the complicated wirings of the weapon of mass destruction, soon paused and gave an order to one of the scientists below him in a fairly loud voice.

"Just rewired the gravity-stabilizer! Run a diagnostics check on the payload and ensure that it won’t come hurtling down like a comet on our heads once we launch it to space"

"Orders duly received sir. We’ll do that immediately" one of the scientists answered while the others nodded their heads in approval.

Edgar on the other hand, gently pried open a small compartment that connected to the internal workings of the railgun.

Carefully, the man slotted the ore into the place where it would further amplify the destructive rays when it was fired.

Finally inserting it and ensuring that all of the wirings and programming was as it should have been as his grey eyes scanned the small holographic panel on the inside of the compartment, the middle-aged man nodded his head in satisfaction.

’Good. On to the other checks’ Edgar thought to himself while closing the compartment, his legs already descending down the steep, long and tall ladder after he was done.

Jumping over to one of the movable platforms that was usually always rotating about the railgun like a satellite, Edgar relaxed for a brief moment while gazing at his greatest technological and scientific achievement yet.

A few more seconds soon passed by and this time, Edgar retrieved a small antique locket from his spatial bracelet and flipped it open.

In it was a picture of a beautiful woman with long black hair and similarly black irises and a girl who seemed to be the daughter, her grey eyes similar to Edgar’s with a black hair like her mother’s.

Gazing at it for a few more minutes with a bittersweet smile on his lips, Edgar brushed his hand gently across the small picture while thinking to himself.

’I know hell is going to be my final destination considering what I’m planning to do but, at the very least, I’ll be content knowing I avenged both of you when that time comes…’
