The test was simple. The fire had been burning steadily for a while now, with oil poured over it to keep the flames alive. The herd of deer remained on the other side of the moat, so the plan was to toss a torch across and see how they reacted.

If the deer scattered, their plan might just work.

Quin stood atop the castle wall, peering down at the animals clustered on the far side of the moat. Holding a torch in his hand, he pulled his arm back, then hurled it over. His first throw fell short, landing just shy of the creatures. Adjusting his angle and force, Quin tried again. This time, the torch landed squarely among the deer.

The flames instantly caught onto one of the creatures. It shook violently, trying to dislodge the torch, but the holy flame had already latched onto its body. The sacred fire wasn’t easily quenched—it didn’t rely on air, couldn’t be doused with water, and once it caught, it didn’t let go.

The deer writhed in agony as the flames consumed it, helpless to stop its own demise. Watching their companion burn, the other deer instinctively backed away, recognizing the danger.

The fire continued to devour the creature until nothing but charred remains were left. Mystic flames typically responded to the will of their user, burning as a mere light source among fellow priests, but transforming into a lethal force when directed at enemies.

"It works," Quin murmured, half-surprised the tactic had succeeded.

"Then we can proceed with the plan," Max confirmed, observing the deer’s fearful reaction. Turning to the group, he shouted, "We’re heading out! Light up the torches!"

Each person had been given a torch, prepared to act as both a deterrent and a defense. If any deer dared approach, they would use the holy fire to drive them back. Normally, priests could only channel the flame to a couple of torches, but with the large blaze outside, they’d managed to arm nearly everyone with a torch imbued with holy fire.

The bridge was finally repaired. All that remained was to make their move. Reeva looked over the crowd—knights steeling themselves, civilians visibly trembling.

They had seen the deer up close and knew the horror that awaited them.

"When the bridge goes down, we’ll move in a wedge formation. Knights will surround the civilians. Depending on the deer’s response, we’ll adjust our pace. Understand?"

"Yes, sir!" came the unified response.

The knight answered with confidence, some have faced these kinds of tense situations before but this is the first time for someone. Since they often work together with a priest and are trained to do so, the chain of command goes to the priest first then their square leader.

"Yes sir..."

The civilians tried to copy the knight but, they were visibly more scared. Their life had just been a peaceful one about 2 weeks ago. Now they had to face these disgusting monsters. Part of the group thinks that the knight and priest are the ones who led these monsters here. But they wouldn’t voice that, not when the aid knights are actively helping them.

"Will we return to our home?"

One of the kids asked, he dearly missed his house although staying in the castle is rather grand, they didn’t like that one bit. While the room was great for their standard, it just didn’t have the same feel as a wooden room.

The mom that is holding the kid in her arms spoke.

"NO sweetie, we will need to find another home."

She said, her voice pained with worry but she tried her best not to let it out. If she’s unstable then her kid would also be stressed and she didn’t want that. Reeva overheard the conversation and turned to Max.

"If we escape could you house them? or at least find them a place to live."

Reeva had seen both of them a couple of times, a mother-son duo. He had seen them around for a while now. It would suck for them to find a new now and settle in.

"Consider it done"

Max also supported this decision, it was in a range of budget for what a person could get from the church.

"Hold on tight young miss, we will get out a new home"

"But I don’t want a new one now..." She still looked down after he heard that they would be moving. She quite like the hillside of the beautiful mountain.

"I’ll assure you, your new place will be even bigger than your last"

"Really? Okay ~"

Reeva turned and hopped onto the horse that Max was riding

"Quin would lead your formation! let’s go"

The person at the gate lowered it for a bit. Then the bright fully down and connected the horde of dear, waiting for the cattle to be open for their feast.

However, they weren’t sure anymore. The people that lower the bridge hop onto the horse and get into formation. At the front, Quin was in charge of getting them out of this encirclement. Reeva and Quin follow right behind him to make sure that the apostle is in the safest place available.

Quin held the torch in front of him as the beast flooded inside, trying to use the bridge to cross over. Halfway through the bridge, the deer had already taken advantage. However, the monster at the front froze. Quicn waves the fire around, but the deer seem to respect the fire. Like their experimentation earlier.

Quin took a cautious step forward, testing the deer’s reaction. They flinched, shrinking back from the pale yellow flames of the holy torch he held. Satisfied, Quin gained confidence and decided to push the plan further. Though his horse seemed reluctant, with its ears flattened and steps hesitant, it obeyed his guidance and moved out through the castle’s gate, leading the way outside.

The wooden bridge creaked as one of the horses crossed it. Quin led the way, with Reeva and Max following closely behind, keeping within the safest part of the formation behind Quin. The holy fire created a breach in the circle of deer, giving them a clear path forward.

As they advanced, another group of knights exited the castle, forming a protective pocket in the middle for the civilians to join. One by one, the people left the safety of the castle. Reeva glanced over his shoulder, checking to ensure everyone was accounted for.

Since the deer hadn’t moved to attack, Reeva decided on a slower, more cautious pace. Moving carefully, he hoped not to stir the deer into aggression.

After days within the castle compound, they were finally on the move, pushing forward slowly but steadily. Whenever a deer approached, the knights and priests waved their torches to deter the creatures from getting too close.

Reeva drew attention, especially as the youngest among them and the leader of the group.

"Let’s go," he signaled.

With that, Quin moved forward, carving a path through the horde of deer with ease. But as they advanced, Reeva caught a glimpse of something at the edge of his vision, and a chill of fear ran through him. He noticed the horses growing tense, sensing the same unsettling presence.

"Quin! Change course! That thing doesn’t look friendly!"

"Understood," Quin replied without hesitation.

Reeva’s tone conveyed urgency, and everyone prepared to move swiftly. Some followed Reeva’s gaze, their eyes widening as they spotted the monstrous figure he had seen.

Quin speeds up his clearing path as the shadow starts casting over.

When he saw the pile of deer, Reeva became tense in dealing with this situation. There was a possibility to encounter this, but he never thought it would be now. It shouldn’t be now.

The deer was forming into another being, they would have exactly a second chance of dealing with the tree. This one Reeva didn’t know if he could get on equal with a good thing. Quin makes way faster than before and Max’s horse.

Right then, the Deer tart resembled a tree, its horn that was never present in these deer, protruding out like a branch. The civilians began to feel unease, because not only one pillar was forming but another two.

They really up the scale... They felt that the deer that were stacked on top of each other had become rather dangerous. The bizarre sight is more than enough to deter anyone from staying here.

The deer started making more progress on them not Only because it was easier but for Them to get away with more of this getting closer to some knight was moving at high speed. They think they could sneak in.

As the knights cut through these monsters, they started appearing in front of them. some of it felt braver than before, thinking it was safe to shove any of their body into the knight. The knight responds in kind, burning the closer deer, making more space for them to cross, the sea of deer.

But panic is still on Reeva’s face, the distant tree of deer was about to become his worst nightmare.
