The deer charged at the little girl, who was left unprotected by the knights. Her scream caught Reeva off guard, and he quickly turned back. The sight was horrifying: the deer’s mouth opened wide, ready to snap down on the girl and her mother.

Time seemed to stop for Reeva as he felt utterly powerless to intervene. But just before the deer could strike, one of the knights left his position, lunging forward to cut it down mere inches from the girl.

"AHHHHHHH!"

The little girl screamed, her life flashing before her eyes. Her mother tried desperately to shield her, and the knight’s last-minute intervention saved them by a hair’s breadth.

However, the knight who rescued the girl put himself in a difficult spot. He had to propel himself from his horse to make the save, leaving his horse unprotected. The horse was killed just as the knight saved the girl.

Moreover, his actions left a gap in the formation. The enraged deer quickly charged through, forcing the remaining knights to fend off four or more deer each. In moments, their formation was barely holding.

The good news was that they were nearly free. Quin had already dealt with the last deer blocking their path.

"We’re out! Civilians, go first!" Max shouted.

Though the knights could defend themselves, the civilians couldn’t. At Max’s command, the civilians rushed forward, leaving the knights to guard their retreat. The girl’s mother quickly urged her horse to safety, but the girl looked back, seeing the knights struggling against the swarm.

One of the mounted knights tried to give the horseless knight a lift, but they were constantly beset by deer. Meanwhile, the tree-creature drew dangerously close, its tendrils reaching toward them.

"Leave me!" the knight gritted his teeth, knowing that if the others tried to help him, they would fall prey to the horde of deer too. He was prepared to sacrifice himself here.

"No, we can’t!" shouted the closest knight, unwilling to abandon him. This knight had saved the little girl—now it was time to save him. But the nearest mounted knight couldn’t get through, as the deer kept pressing him back, and the others were beginning to break free from the horde.

"Leave! Tell the kids that I loved them," the knight called out with conviction. He had saved the girl because he saw his own daughter and son in her. As a father, the thought of watching his loved ones die was unbearable. So he jumped at the chance to protect the next generation.

With a determined gaze, he held his sword firm and slashed at any deer that dared come close.

The other knight could only grit his teeth and withdraw, joining the others in escaping the encirclement. They left one lone knight behind, surrounded by the deer.

"Come at me! I, Lemire, will take all of you on!" he shouted, hyping himself up for the fight of his life. With a torch in one hand and a sword in the other, he faced down the deer. Slashing one and burning another, he fought bravely, but the third deer rammed into his stomach, sending him tumbling into the path of another. Blood sprayed from his mouth as he struggled back up, tightening his grip on his sword and swinging at yet another deer.

"You monstrous bastards! The Church will eradicate you all!" he roared, his voice full of fury. But his rage was cut short as tendrils extended from the tree creature behind the deer.

Standing before the massive tree, Lemire felt helpless. It towered above him, casting a dark shadow that blotted out the sun. He tried to fend off the tendrils, but they were faster than he could react. In an instant, one whipped his sword from his grasp and lifted him high in the air, where everyone could see him.

This is it, he thought. The tendril held him fast as more eyes opened across the bark, watching him with eerie, unblinking focus. His body felt twisted and strange, as though he were spinning, and he gritted his teeth, enduring the last moments of pain.

"You’re not dying here."

A cold voice cut through the chaos. Lemire’s eyes widened as the tendrils around him were suddenly severed, and he felt himself falling. Before he hit the ground, strong arms caught him.

Looking up, he saw a dark-haired teenager in a robe protected by armor. Tears filled Lemire’s eyes as he recognized the radiance of a servant of the Sun God.

"Thank you, Your Holiness."

"Your good deeds shall be repaid."

Reeva had entered his half-demon form—a state he avoided unless absolutely necessary. But saving this knight was an emergency. Though he knew little about the man, he knew the knight had saved the little girl.

And that was enough merit for him to live.

Reeva used his demon body to leap across the deer. The tree’s thousand eyes focused on him, but Reeva was ready. As he activated his own ability, the mystic force radiating from the tree’s eyes was absorbed by the yellow mist surrounding him, nullifying their effects. Though the tree’s gaze held immense power, Reeva’s ability countered anything mystic-related—if he activated it in time.

His body was faster than any deer, here and quickly caught up with the knight squad that by now had already run quite the distance.

"Oil!"

Max shouts after seeing Reeva jumping back. One knight that carries a barrel of oil quickly rolls it on the ground and sprays its content all over. The other remaining priest then lit up a flame and threw it into the oil. Lighting the whole area to fire, preventing any other deer from pursuing them directly.

They had to take another route to catch up to the knight’s last position and by then they ould be long gone. Reeva threw the knight onto another knight’s horse and than went back to Max’s horse.

Even after seeing it, Max couldn’t help but marvel at the power that the apostle command. He never thought that the apotle could fight, let alone be this fast.
