Chapter 214 -215: How about Marrying You with a Ten-Mile Bridal Procession_1
“Ahem!” Someone let out a light cough.
Muniang immediately pushed Erliang away and, wiping the corner of her eyes, said with embarrassed annoyance, “I got too excited, my apologies.” She addressed this to the villagers.
She had modern thoughts ingrained in her bones and usually kept them in check, but in her excitement, it was easy to slip up.
Yu Ze’s face darkened a bit; where did all these onlookers come from? Could he and his wife not enjoy some tender moments in peace!
The villagers were quite understanding, not the sort to nitpick unnecessarily, and after all, as it concerned the couple, they naturally would not say much more.
However, Qiao Dalang, lying on the ground, saw Muniang as if she was his savior and quickly begged, “Muniang! I was wrong, I truly was, I shouldn’t have made up those stories behind your back, saying such foul things. Please, you are the bigger person, forgive this fool,” he pleaded.
Qiao Dalang’s face was almost swollen beyond recognition from the slapping, puffy and with fine streaks of blood at the corner of his mouth. He really couldn’t take it any longer; even a fool could see that, at this point, Muniang’s word held more sway than anyone else’s.
Muniang glanced at him; the old woman had roughly told her what obscene things Qiao Dalang had said behind her back, how he even had the gall to encourage others to lure her out and rape her. This man’s heart was truly black!
Fearing that Muniang would ignore him, Qiao Dalang scrambled over and grabbed the hem of her dress. Muniang swiftly stepped aside. The villagers were watching, continuing to beat him would indeed be cruel, and others might speak ill of her for being ruthless in the future.
Muniang glared at him and then said to Erliang, “Husband, there’s no need for us to get angry at such a person. You’ve just returned, and I haven’t even had the chance to welcome you back properly. Let’s not cause a scene. If we hurt him further, some shameless people will likely come knocking for compensation.”
The insinuation was understood by all; Mrs. Ji might indeed do something like that!
Yu Ze understood what Muniang meant and nodded, then addressed Qiao Dalang with a cold voice, “If there’s a next time, I won’t spare you!”
Qiao Dalang didn’t dare retort, nodding fervently like a scolded dog, “Yes, yes, yes, I definitely won’t dare to act out again; it will never happen!”
Yu Ze then turned to the surrounding villagers and bowed respectfully, saying, “Today, you all have been witnesses. If it were not for Qiao Dalang’s slanderous words about Muniang and his incitement of others to dishonor her, luckily I arrived in time. If I hadn’t, and these animals had succeeded, to whom could my wife have turned for justice? If I couldn’t teach him a lesson, how would I call myself a man, a husband?!”

His words were powerful and resonant, and the villagers nodded in agreement.
Yu Ze continued, “Let’s leave today’s matter as it is, I’ve meted out the punishment he deserved, and I won’t dwell on it any further. But I do hope that you will all bear witness that Qiao Dalang got what he deserved, and you all know this in your hearts. If the Qiao family, spurred on by Mrs. Ji, comes to us with complaints over this affair, I ask you to stand with us for justice!”
The villagers were already aware of Qiao Dalang’s character, and Mrs. Ji from the Qiao family was known to stoop to new lows. Instantly, they realized that Yu Ze’s words were a precaution against Mrs. Ji making an unreasonable fuss over her son’s injuries later on.
“Erliang, rest easy, Qiao Dalang has never been upstanding, and he’s caused many problems in our village. It’s about time someone taught him a lesson. If the Qiao family dares to cause trouble, we’ll all stand with you!” the villagers declared one after another.
Muniang noticed that Erliang’s mind had become much more agile since his recovery, always prepared for the future.
Having returned home, it inevitably became a bustle of excitement. Mrs. Lin had been worried that Yu Ze would not come back, and now seeing him return made her somewhat restrained, as if the man before her had changed completely and was now somewhat cold.
“It’s good that you’ve returned, it’s good that you’ve returned,” Mrs. Lin’s smile was unusually formal, and although Yu Ze had already restrained his aura, she still felt some pressure, as someone who had drilled on the battlefield for ten years naturally had an extraordinary presence.
Yu Ze responded with a gentle smile, and then bowed deeply to Mrs. Lin, saying respectfully, “Greetings to my mother-in-law. I’m sorry for having worried you during these days. From now on, I’ll take good care of Muniang.”
Mrs. Lin quickly helped him up, “As long as you two can live well together, that’s better than anything else. Get up quickly!”
Muniang said with a smile, “Mother, don’t worry. Yu Ze has returned, hasn’t he?”
Yu Ze squeezed Muniang’s hand tightly, his heart filled with guilt. If he had known that his hasty departure would bring her so much trouble, he shouldn’t have left like that. Thinking about the pressure Muniang had endured these past two months, Yu Ze felt heartbroken.
After a lively dinner, Mrs. Ji indeed came to cause trouble at Muniang’s home, but Muniang had instructed the servant early on not to let anyone in and not to pay attention to them. On such a good day, she didn’t want to affect everyone’s mood. Besides, Yu Ze had already notified everyone earlier, and now justice was on their side. What was there to fear?
After dinner, Muniang thought about arranging Yu Ze’s luggage, but when she looked through the small bundle he brought back, she found only an exquisitely-made skirt. The material was of the highest quality. Having managed the Embroidery House business for a while, she had become somewhat familiar with fabrics. The best she had ever seen was cloud brocade, but this fabric was clearly even better, something Muniang could not recognize.
“Do you like it? My mother had it made especially for you. It’s made from Shu brocade, a tribute from other countries not long ago. The palace received three bolts of it, and one was bestowed upon our family. My mother then had a skirt made for you,” said Yu Ze appearing out of nowhere.
Muniang was astounded, not expecting something so precious. Shu brocade was priceless and not available in the market; the palace had received only three bolts and one was used to make her a skirt. Mercy, she was a village girl, could she even wear something like that outside?
Seeing what Muniang was thinking, Yu Ze laughed, “It’s just my mother’s way of showing her affection. She didn’t think too much about it. If you’re afraid it’s too eye-catching to wear outside, just wear it inside for me. It’s a waste to show anyone else anyway.”
Muniang gave him a deadpan look, “Wearing it just for you isn’t a waste?” But then she seemed to recall something and asked, “What about your luggage? You didn’t bring any clothes?”
Yu Ze replied innocently, “I left in such a hurry when I went back, I didn’t take anything with me. What would I have brought back?”
Muniang exclaimed, “You plan to wear your old clothes?”
“Am I supposed to hunt and farm in brocade robes?” Yu Ze now found himself at a loss for words, “I like the clothes my wife makes, other clothes just don’t feel right.”
Muniang twitched her mouth, aware of the level of her sewing skills.
Yu Ze took Muniang’s hand earnestly, “My lady, now that I’m here, I definitely won’t let anyone bully you again.”
“Yeah, I know,” Muniang felt a warmth in her heart. Although she could fend for herself, which woman wouldn’t wish to be protected?
“My mother says I should take you back to the capital to be entered into the family register. My lady, we never had a proper wedding. I don’t want to wrong you. After we return to the capital and meet my parents, how about I marry you with a grand ceremony?” Yu Ze’s eyes shone, he remembered the envious look Muniang had when she saw Xia Bing in her bridal gown, how could he forget that he owed her a wedding?
