Chapter 162: A Special Beast

[Night Time.]

The chilling wind howled through the dense, oppressive trees of the borderlands. Sofia pushed her mount to its absolute limit, the horse’s hooves thundering against the uneven dirt path.

"Come on, girl!! We must hurry!!" Sofia yelled, forcing her horse at maximum speed, running through the darkness. Her eyes were glowing with a faint, blue energy, a passive tracking skill actively piercing through the gloom of the moonless night. She held the sealed intelligence scroll tightly in her inventory, acutely aware that the survival of the Empires might depend on it.

WHOOSH!!

"...?!"

She looked over her shoulder, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up. Her enhanced gaze moved on the shifting shadows behind her, tracking unnatural silhouettes moving behind rocks and thick underbrush with horrifying agility.

’Huh? How did they know?’ She was dumbfounded. The stealth of her departure had been flawless. Yet, the shadows looked a lot like the grotesque human mutations they had encountered just hours before.

’Wait!! If they are after me, it means what Miss Mirabella said is actually the truth, so they plan to stop my message! What the hell?!! Why didn’t you guys attack us when we’re together!!’ she yelled inwardly, her mind realizing the cult had splintered their forces to silence the messenger. She stretched her left hand to the side, breaking down her spatial storage barrier, as her legendary grade wooden staff appeared in a flash of light.

"Seems I will have to fight." She muttered, her senses expanding to feel the corrupted energy signatures saturating the air around her:

"10, 20... 35 of them, the weakest, hmm... Lv100, this is crazy, how did the Devil Cult have so many powerful fighters?" She asked, a cold sweat breaking out on her forehead. Mass-producing Lv100 plus combatants defied all known laws. Pushing her fear aside, she raised her staff into the night sky, channeling a massive chunk of her Spirit Energy:

"Helm of Absolute protection!!" She yelled. A brilliant, defensive green light materialized from the tip of her staff and instantly enveloped her horse. The buff took immediate effect, and instantly, the beast shot forward with ten times its normal speed, the sudden acceleration even stunning the animal.

"Don’t worry, girl!! I am with you, just like we practice." Sofia said in a soothing voice, flooding the mount with calming energy, instantly calming down her ride as they blurred into a streak of green light.

Deep in the shadows, the pursuing figures increased their speed, their mutated limbs tearing up the earth.

’Didn’t know she can buff her own horse, this lady is surely a powerful mage.’ A man in a heavy Devil Cult cloak thought, leaping effortlessly between the ancient branches. He was the commander of this splinter unit, and the aura radiating from him was suffocating. He locked his corrupted red eyes onto the fleeing green light and pointed one finger at her back.

"Runic Finger."

A complex, blood-red rune appeared in the air directly in front of his fingertip, humming with lethal, concentrated magic, and started spinning clockwise.

"One attack is all I need."

Without hesitation, the rune shot towards Sofia with insane speed, tearing through the air and closing the distance in an instant. The projectile was heavily locked onto her energy signature.

"This?!"

Feeling the overwhelming killing intent of the incoming attack, Sofia looked over her shoulder in sheer shock: "A Lv300 rune master?" She was stunned. The sheer level disparity meant her defensive buff would be shattered like glass.

BOOM!! 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

But before the attack could connect with her barrier, it exploded violently mid-air, creating a massive shockwave of red and white energy, shocking Sofia, the Devil Cult member, and even the mutated grunts.

".....?!"

Everyone was stunned. The dust cleared, and standing firmly in the middle of the cratered dirt path, staring at the enemies, was the majestic, winged white tiger.

"Cupcake?" Sofia was stunned, forcefully pulling her reins and slowing down. She raised her head to the enemies, seeing the mutated humans coming to a screeching halt, and amidst their ranks stood the Rune Master, his face hidden in the deep cowl of his cloak.

"Who really is this Mirabella." He asked, raising his head, his glowing red eyes fixed warily on the divine beast tiger and the halted Sofia. The cult’s intelligence network was vast, yet this variable was a complete ghost.

"The devil cult doesn’t even know that name, and she knows everything about us! She must be a spy placed in our cult by you dragon empire scums... Anyway, We will kill you here, and finish her later." He said, his voice dripping with malice. A massive, complex red runic circle appeared behind his back, cracking with unstable, dark lightning.

Cupcake didn’t even flinch at the display of Lv300 power.

"Continue on your journey, leave this to me." Cupcake said, her voice ringing clear in the air, looking over her shoulder at Sofia.

"What? They’re too many... I should--"

"--Hey, are you looking down on me?"

"...Huh?"

Sofia was speechless, staring at Cupcake in utter confusion. The tiger’s tone was incredibly casual for a life-or-death ambush.

"I say get going, so get going."

"Hahaha! Do you actually think I will stand by and watch that happen? Stopping her is our goal, I hope you know that, Vermin." The Rune Master laughed darkly, the ambient energy warping around his dark spell.

"What did you just call me?" Cupcake’s eyes glowed fiercely. The divine beast’s pride flared, and for the first time, her usually bright eyes turned a demonic red, as volatile red lightning spread out from her pristine white fur, matching the Rune Master’s intensity.

"Oh! You’re also a Lv300... Impressive, I am sure that Mirabella is your Master." The man spread his hands wide, recognizing the power scaling of a high-tier familiar. The massive rune circle behind him violently separated into two, dual-casting and spinning with lethal intent.

"Die!!!"

He yelled, sending the two devastating energy beams forward, meant to obliterate the beast and the messenger in one strike.

"Sonic Gravity."

Cupcake casually tapped one heavy paw onto the dirt ground. Instantly, the localized gravity in a hundred-meter radius increased a thousand folds, space itself visibly warping, forcing the two high-tier rune attacks instantly into the ground, neutralizing them completely.

BOOM!!!

THUD!

THUD!

THUD!

"....?!"

Sofia was dumbfounded, staring wide-eyed at the enemies who were all violently forced onto their knees and faces, the sheer gravitational pressure cracking the earth beneath them. The thirty-five mutated humans couldn’t even lift a finger.

"What are you still waiting for?" Cupcake’s voice snapped her out of her daze.

"Oh! Right away!"

Sofia didn’t hesitate this time. She turned her horse around, the green buff flaring to life again, and continued her vital journey back to the capital.

"No!! We must stop her!" The man gritted his teeth, blood dripping from his nose as the gravity threatened to crush his organs. He started violently activating all his dark spirit energy, fighting the gravity, slowly forcing himself back to his feet.

"Under such pressure, you’re truly formidable." Cupcake stated, acknowledging his high stats. She started walking slowly towards him. As she moved, a brilliant blue light surrounded her massive feline body, triggering the Imperial Bloodline Boost skill. The next moment, the tiger’s form shifted, compressed, and transformed entirely into Mirabella.

"....?!!!"

The Rune Master was dumbfounded, his dark magic faltering as he stared at the human girl standing before him in utter disbelief. She looked exactly like the anomaly from the carriage, only her eyes retained that terrifying, beastly red glow.

"This is actually the first time I used this form, my master sure have a nice body." She smiled, lifting a hand to examine it, moving her red gaze down her simple white dress, fascinated by the bipedal anatomy.

"A Beast that can take its Master’s appearance? What sort of Beast are you?!!" He yelled, his mind failing to grasp a familiar with such a god-tier, rule-breaking bloodline skill.

Cupcake—now perfectly mimicking Mirabella’s physical form—held her jaw, and after thinking for a moment, playfully nodded her head:

"A special Beast."

".....?!!"
