Chapter 70: Chapter 70: Yonglan Blood

The voice of Scorching Wings thundered across the land, the sky filled with the echoes of the Legendary True Dragon’s roar.

The sound even penetrated the numerous barriers, reaching the lowest level of the Resistance Army’s fortress.

The vast space was large enough to hold several thousand people, and all the fortress’s Defense Techniques had been rerouted to the basement, making the place nigh-impregnable.

Thanks to looting the War Knight’s pack, advanced communication equipment had been set up on the surface, allowing everyone underground to clearly see the sky.

When Scorching Wings arrived, all the members of the Resistance Army and the Trial Takers were nearly suffocated by the Legendary True Dragon’s sheer immensity. And after Scorching Wings issued its declaration, they grew even more confused.

’What is it going to do?’

They watched as the colossal Giant Dragon, as magnificent as a living volcano, extended its claws toward the clouds in the sky.

The moment the tips of the Dragon’s claws touched the clouds, a sharp crackle erupted.

FWOOSH—

The clouds, as if some flammable liquid, were instantly ignited. Searing, ember-like flames shot out from the tips of Scorching Wings’s claws, spreading across the entire sky with lightning speed.

In the blink of an eye, the azure sky, once streaked with drifting clouds, transformed into a roiling, steaming sea of molten fire.

Beneath the sea of fire, the Legendary True Dragon began to chant in a slow, unhurried rhythm, its voice speaking in an Ancient Dragon Language that seemed as timeless and distant as the stars themselves.

As if the inside of a volcano were projected onto the heavens, after Scorching Wings’s long period of gathering power and chanting, the ignited sky began to bulge downward like a massive bubble.

The enormous blister expanded rapidly until it reached its limit—and burst!

What followed was fire, raining down from the sky.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

How could one even begin to describe the sound waves that blotted out the sky?

The shriek of the atmosphere being torn asunder, the roar of a surging tidal wave, the sorrowful tremor of the earth itself...

None of these descriptions seemed adequate. But for those witnessing it firsthand, describing the sound of the celestial fire was utterly irrelevant. Their senses were completely overwhelmed by the downpour of fiery rain, a terrifying heat that submerged the mountains in an instant.

The sea of fire falling from the sky was nothing like "a few meteorites." Overwhelming flames fell like a torrential downpour. The fire of heavenly punishment pierced straight through the mountain ranges, and the dense jungle melted away like snowflakes beneath the flowing lava.

BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!

Muffled explosions echoed from within the rock strata. The mountain range, which had stood for millions of years, was melted through with a sickening crunch, like a crisp biscuit, until the destruction pierced the fortress embedded within the mountain.

The celestial fire melted steel and brick into a pus-like slurry of molten iron that splattered down continuously. The permanent fortress the Resistance Army had spent decades building disintegrated in an instant, reduced to dross beneath the Celestial Fire Falls.

Even the mountain ridges beyond the Resistance Army’s fortress could not escape being engulfed. The cascading celestial fire indiscriminately incinerated everything on the surface of the land.

Forests, rock strata, and rivers alike all dissolved beneath the apocalyptic Celestial Fire Falls.

Down in the lowest level of the Resistance Army’s fortress, protected by Barriers and shields, the occupants were safe. Although the fortress above had been utterly obliterated and scorching magma was dripping down, its force was already spent. It failed to breach the defenses of their small hiding place.

Even so, with the fortress above them completely melted away, meteors of celestial fire had smashed a massive crater directly into the ground, exposing their underground space.

"Thankfully, we already evacuated everyone else."

Solren watched the scene with a grim expression, his voice laced with lingering fear.

This was why he hadn’t assembled the troops for a grand, decisive battle. Against a casual display of power from a Legendary Giant Dragon, mortal men were meaningless, no matter their numbers. Anyone who hadn’t reached the Extraordinary Third Tier, [Prominent], couldn’t even set foot on the battlefield.

But even for those who could withstand the Dragon Might, witnessing the terror of a Legendary Giant Dragon’s magic casting for the first time left their mental states in a precarious condition.

"This is... a Legendary Giant Dragon?"

"We can’t win... There’s no way we can win!"

"Our ancestors fought against this kind of Monster? You’ve got to be kidding me!"

"Can a Legend be this strong? I don’t know... I don’t understand anymore..."

Most of the Trial Takers were on the verge of a mental breakdown, but there were also a few outliers who were delighted rather than frightened.

’[Celestial Fire Falls]... a Legendary Magic spell chanted in the Dragon Language... Fucking insane.’

Westheid was shocked, but he couldn’t help but feel a sense of admiration and yearning. Even though it was his enemy, the sight of Scorching Wings chanting Legendary Magic was truly something to behold.

’A natural border formed by mountains and forests?’

’Just a sandcastle on a beach, ready to be knocked over by a Legendary Giant Dragon.’

Compared to Scorching Wings, even the Legendary Sword Saint Solren seemed insignificant. If Solren’s strength was at least understandable, how could one even describe a Giant Dragon that could casually call down natural disasters and reshape the very landscape?

’So damn powerful! So damn dominant!’

"Hahahahaha!! What a terrifying Monster! I’m even trembling with fear!"

Wild laughter erupted from the Yonglan Knights behind him. Even more dramatic than Westheid’s expression was Rafati’s. The Knight, with his choppy, pale silver hair, drew the scimitar from his waist. His body, just as he’d claimed, was trembling uncontrollably. Yet, he bit his lip hard enough to draw blood, and the look on his face was...

Fear? Anger? Joy? Excitement?

...a completely twisted amalgamation of conflicting emotions.

"So this is a Legendary Giant Dragon? Damn, it’s terrifyingly strong! Excellent! If I can fight such a monster to the death, I will be buried in the joy of glory!"

It wasn’t just Rafati. Several other Yonglan Knights didn’t even wait for the Celestial Fire Falls to end before charging out of the Barrier. They tore open the fragile ceiling and, risking burns from the remaining embers, raised their weapons and screamed at the top of their lungs:

"My God and my ancestors, bear witness! I dedicate this glorious, mortal battle to you! Grant me your protection! Grant me your blessing! We live and die by the valor of the Knight!"

’You’re in the middle of the Radiant Holy Tree’s Secret Realm Trial and you’re swearing an oath to the Yonglan Riding God? Are you sure the Riding God can even see you from here?’

Westheid was about to make a sarcastic comment at the sight, but then he saw Rafati pull out a dagger and plunge it directly into his own carotid artery!

SQUELCH—

As great gouts of blood spurted out, Rafati clenched his jaw and chanted in a trembling, wheezing voice:

"Aaaargh... The dagger marks my flesh, I tremble, unable to speak... Let this pain befall me, that my blood-soaked valor may never rest!"

’Holy shit! He’s buffing himself right at the start!’

As a veteran Yonglan player, Westheid immediately recognized what Rafati was doing.

[Yonglan Blood]

[The Yonglan Riding God blesses all who walk the Path of the Knight, wishing for His descendants to be eternally tenacious, resolute, indestructible, and ever-victorious.]

[The Blood of the Riding God be with you; may the glory of the Riding God shine upon you.]

[Gain proficiency with Sword Spear class weapons. As stamina and health are lost, All Attributes will be enhanced. Gain the ability to continue fighting on the brink of death and a great increase to resilience.]

This was a Talent that every Yonglan Knight of the [Prominent] Tier possessed. It didn’t even necessarily require one to be of native Yonglan blood. As long as one formally completed a stage of the Knightly Path, they could drink the waters of Sword Lake and acquire this Talent.

The effect was extremely simple and brutal: you get a massive power-up at low health.

The more injured you were, the closer you came to death, the more your strength, speed, recovery, and Magic Power would increase.

And the stat boosts were nothing to scoff at! It was a standard T2-level ability—which was not low by any means, especially considering it was a passive for all Yonglan Knights!

There’s a reason the Knight Series classes were considered overpowered.

For a Yonglan Knight, putting oneself in a bleeding, Severely Injured status before a fight was just a common warm-up.

The other Yonglan Knights began to display their own methods, an endless variety of self-harming techniques. For a moment, the other Trial Takers and elite Resistance Army soldiers were left stunned, the sight even overshadowing the shock of a Legendary Magic spell wiping the landscape clean.
