God-Tier Extraction Talent: Reincarnated in a Game-like World!-Chapter 506: Tracking White Phantom
Back in the banquet hall, Scarlet sat with one leg crossed over the other, her glass resting lightly between two fingers. The lights above were warm, the music soft, and the nobles around her were still busy smiling, talking, and pretending to enjoy themselves.
Scarlet had already seen enough of these high class gatherings to stop finding them interesting long ago. The same polite laughter. The same fake praise. The same people pretending not to hate each other while waiting for a chance to step on someone else.
Her eyes moved lazily across the hall, pausing on faces she knew and faces she did not care about. General Aston was still seated with his usual strict face, several nobles were talking too loudly, and Jack Arefield remained as composed as ever while the women near his table kept stealing glances his way.
She lifted the glass slightly, but before she could drink, she froze mid action, her eyes narrowing.
For the briefest second, a powerful aura spread somewhere deep within the castle.
The aura was very subtle, but it was strong enough that someone at her level could not possibly miss it.
She lowered the glass slowly, and although she did not say anything, a frown appeared on her face.
At the same time, not only her, but several others in the hall also reacted. A few older nobles turned their heads slightly. Some of the guards by the walls straightened. Even General Aston, who had been speaking with two military officers near the main table, paused mid sentence and looked toward the direction where the aura had come from.
The pressure vanished quickly just as it had come. It was so fast that most who had felt it began to doubt themselves. With nothing happening afterward, they assumed it was either an expert inside the castle who had accidentally let their aura slip, or that they had imagined it.
Scarlet’s fingers tightened slightly around the stem of her glass. Her face remained calm, but her emotionless eyes held a glimmer of curiosity.
Even though the others had been fooled, she was not. That aura just now had too much of a coincidence tied to it.
"Why did it only appear a few minutes after they left?" she thought.
The Vice Guild Leader was snapped out of her thoughts when she noticed movement.
Near another table, one of Darius Aston’s friends returned with a frown on his face. The young noble moved quickly to the others and lowered his voice. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦
"I didn’t find him."
Another noble blinked. "What do you mean you didn’t find him?"
"I mean exactly that," the first man said. "He wasn’t in the side halls, and he wasn’t outside the banquet entrance either."
The others exchanged glances at once.
"He could have gone somewhere else. Maybe he left the castle."
"That’s strange. Did you find the other masked man as well?"
The noble who had searched shook his head. "No, I couldn’t find him either."
"Do you think he went after that man?"
That question made the mood around their table turn uneasy.
General Aston also heard part of it. His face did not change much, but the line between his brows deepened slightly.
Scarlet, who had heard everything, set her glass down. She rose from her seat without attracting too much attention, adjusted the edge of her sleeve, and gave a small nod toward the table she had been sitting with.
"Excuse me," she said calmly.
She moved out of the banquet hall at once, her heels making light sounds against the polished floor while the music continued behind her. A few nearby nobles noticed and watched her leave, but no one dared ask where she was going.
Outside the castle, farther down the hill where the main lights no longer reached properly, two figures stood in the dark.
Both wore black clothing that blended with the night, and around their foreheads were black bandanas bearing the black serpent mark of the Black Star Clan. One stood with an alert posture, arms folded and eyes moving toward the castle from time to time.
The other was stranger.
A blindfold covered his eyes completely, yet he looked calmer than his companion. Beside him crouched a strange beast with a lean body and a long snout. The creature’s nostrils flared as it sniffed the cold air around them.
The first man finally broke the silence.
"Are you sure this was White Phantom’s last seen location?"
The blindfolded man did not answer immediately. He stood still for a moment, one hand resting lightly near the beast’s neck.
"Yes."
The first man glanced at him, then toward the castle again.
Among the Black Star Clan, this man was one of the top members. His status was not low, and his methods were even stranger than most of the clan’s killers. Few people understood the full nature of his power, but everyone knew one thing. If he said a trail was still warm, it usually meant he had already confirmed it.
The blindfolded man reached into his coat and took out a small piece of cloth.
The fabric was dark, torn at the edge, and faintly stained. He lowered it toward the beast’s nose. The strange creature sniffed once, then again, its body going still after the second breath.
The first man leaned forward slightly.
"Well?"
The blindfolded man remained quiet for another second, as if listening to something no one else could hear. The beast lifted its head after a moment and turned toward him instead of the castle.
"What is it?" the first man frowned, still puzzled by the whole action. The way his partner was taking his time made him even more anxious.
The blindfolded man folded the cloth back up and tucked it away, then said calmly,
"He’s still here. The moment he steps out... we strike."
