Chapter 100: The Tyrant

Kai was already aware from the system’s notification that the Gene Trader would appear at random locations.

Still, it didn’t hurt to ask... perhaps the Augmented Human in front of him knew something the system hadn’t revealed.

Hale’s reply came after a short pause.

"If you’re serious about finding him, check the areas where Field Tyrants have spawned. Traders often linger near places where dangerous variants appear... it draws attention, and it is where customers come looking for resources."

Kai nodded after hearing this.

However, Hale wasn’t finished yet.

"If not there, search the ruins. Shady places, broken structures, anywhere the sunlight doesn’t reach. The heat drives them underground. They prefer to wait in the shadows for those who know how to look."

Kai nodded, committing the advice to memory. The Gene Trader sounded elusive, but at least now he had a direction.

Finally, Hale adjusted his armor, preparing to leave.

But before stepping away, he gave one last warning.

"Be careful. The Tyrant you fought was only one type. They’re all called Tyrants, but each variant is different. The one you eliminated carried missile launchers. Others rely on flamethrowers, some wield specialized claws that can tear through thick steel, and there are other versions like one with heavy armor, that make them nearly indestructible. Each one is deadly in its own way."

Kai nodded grimly as he already guessed that much after experiencing the missile launchers a while ago.

The thought of facing more Tyrants, each with unique weapons and abilities, was daunting. But it was better to know than to be caught unprepared.

"Thank you," Kai said sincerely.

Hale gave a small nod...

He wasn’t sure how long Kai’s small shelter could survive, but he wanted to give him a chance to survive longer.

Then, without another word, he turned and disappeared into the night, leaving Kai and Atom alone in the workshop.

Kai exhaled after the high-level human had finally left...

The Gene Trader. The status crystal. The warning about Tyrants.

Hale’s visit had been brief, but he had learned a lot of things... Still, he now had more questions than answers.

Nonetheless, Kai knew one thing for certain, Hale’s arrival was no coincidence. He had a feeling that there was more to it. He just couldn’t prove it yet, just like how he had gotten so many Errors from the system before.

Meanwhile, as most of the residents of the shelter were already resting, Victor sat hunched over his workbench, the dim light of the shelter’s workshop glinting off the twelve Energy Cores that were laid out before him.

Eight of them pulsed faintly with a deep crimson hue... They were the Tyrant Energy Cores, salvaged from the wreckage of the missile-bearing machine they had destroyed and the one with the cannon and claw...

The other four glowed with a softer blue. They were Sentinel Energy Cores... They were far more common and less volatile.

Of course, they weren’t obtained from the D-Grade Sentinels since only C-Grade could have such cores.

Instead, these four came together with the Field Tyrant, who had launched missiles.

"It must be spare energy cores for its Plasma Cannon or something." Victor guessed.

For now, however, he was in a dilemma... 𝚏𝐫𝚎𝗲𝕨𝐞𝐛𝕟𝚘𝐯𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝗺

He rubbed his hands together, and soon, grease and soot stained his palms.

"The Tyrant cores... too rare to waste. They’re worth more than we can imagine. Better to save them for something greater."

Victor carefully separated the cores, sliding the Tyrant ones into a special case. Their energy signatures were unstable, and he knew they could power far more than simple weapons.

Because of that, they would remain untouched for sometime.

Instead, he turned his attention to the Sentinel Energy Cores.

He then turned his attention to the four Sentinel Energy Cores.

Soon, he fitted one into the charging port of a Plasma Rifle.

The weapon gave a low hum as the core’s energy began to flow through its circuits.

"Nice..."

Victor adjusted the stabilizers, checked the gauges, and slowly directed the power until the rifle’s indicator light turned green.

Sweat gathered on his brow as he worked, but his movements were careful.

After all, this was a dangerous task.

Every connection was tested, every reading verified. He knew a single mistake could overload the rifle, but his hands were steady.

One by one, the weapons lit up, their charge indicators glowing in sequence.

"Good," Victor muttered, satisfaction in his voice. "At least these will be ready when the next fight comes."

Elsewhere in the shelter, Claire sat alone, her eyes half‑closed as she whispered to the unseen presence only she could hear.

"Are you still there?"

The spirit’s voice was faint, but she could hear it clearly reply.

They weren’t discussing anything important, just fragments of random conversation.

The spirit teased her about the way Victor looked at her when she wasn’t paying attention...

At other times, the spirit asked her what she thought of the food rations, mocking the bland taste and joking that even the machines outside probably had better fuel. Claire laughed softly, though she knew no one else would understand.

Still, she really couldn’t help but feel amaze with the spirit that she was talking with.

Her Talent, Fifth Sin, weighed heavily on her mind even after all this time. She believed it meant Greed, though she still didn’t understand its full implications.

’Was the spirit tied to that sin? Would I be devoured if I kept using the skill?’

These were some of the questions in her mind.

The next morning, Kai stood at the edge of the shelter, surveying the walls and the traps that were still unfinished.

The Field Tyrant Hunt was still not over since it was a ten-day event!

Anyway, Kai couldn’t afford to send everyone out of the shelter to hunt the Field Tyrants or search for the Gene Trader.

Defenses had to be repaired, and the shelter needed to remain secure.

Soon, Kai decided to send only the scouts to look at the areas where they might find the Gene Trader!
