Chapter 83: Manifestors

May 13, 2025.

In a training facility in the Demon Hunter Association, two figures exchanged blows with one another.

However, it was obvious at a glance that one was overwhelmingly superior than the other.

Woosh!

Akihito sped up, arriving in front of Zold. He threw a flurry of jabs, each punch cracking through the air.

But Zold dodged each one of them casually, exerting minimal effort.

Then, Zold stepped aside, causing Akihito to lean forward.

Zold raised his hand, then hacked it on Akihito’s neck.

As though sensing it, Akihito lowered his head.

But then from below, a leg swept both of his feet, causing him float on the air.

Woosh!

Akihito’s eyes widened slightly!

For the finishing blow, Zold lightly chopped Akihito’s neck, blowing him away to a distance.

But if that wasn’t enough, he vanished, instantly appearing over to Akihito’s position.

Zold grabbed Akihito’s head, raising it like a ragdoll.

He shook his head in disappointment.

"Your attacks are so easy to read. If this is all you have, then it’s better if you leave..."

But before Zold could finish, Akihito opened his mouth, biting Zold’s hand.

Bite!

Yet the moment Akihito did so, he felt his teeth rupture. Blood exploded in his mouth, and his consciousness slipped away.

"Hoho."

Zold glanced at Akihito, smiling slightly.

"One point for desperation. That’s good. But which manual in the association taught you to bite the hand of your enemy? Minus one hundred for recklessness."

’Aghk...’

Akihito felt nauseaous, but before he could cough of heavy amounts of blood, Zold let go of him.

Thud!

Akihito fell on the ground flat, causing a loud thud.

"Haa... ha..."

Then, unable to resist anymore, he vomited large amounts of blood.

"Gaghk!" 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢

A puddle of blood formed around him, yet a small smile hung on his face, seemingly satisfied.

His eyes showed signs of slipping away, but before that could happen, Zold threw a small pill inside his mouth.

Akihito instinctively swallowed. Very quickly, he felt a refreshing sensations spread throughout his body.

"W-what is this... captain..."

"Healing pill."

Zold answered calmly. Since he didn’t have any healing skills, he prepared some healing pills during every training session. This way, he didn’t have to worry about injuring them to the point of death.

’Healing pill?’

Akihito thought, but he was too tired to think of the implications of it. He simply closed his eyes, panting heavily as he brought a hand over his forehead.

"... How did I do, Captain?"

He asked tiredly.

Zold stood up as he answered. "Not bad. You’re already showing signs of improvement."

Hearing that, Akihito sighed in relief.

"... Thank you."

Even though he didn’t feel that way, if his Captain said so, then it was probably true.

"How’s your progress in mastering the Manifestor basic exercise, ’Soul Link’?" Zold asked.

Akihito quickly answered. "Uhh... truth to be told, Captain. I’m reading and practicing the exercise everyday, but I’m stuck on the final part. I can’t seem to establish a soul link with my dice."

Zold nodded slightly.

"That’s natural." He glanced at Akihito casually. "The issue is that you’re treating your talent as an external manifestation."

Akihito let out a confused ’huh’.

"Hm, are you familiar with the other expression paths?" Zold asked, but Akihito shook his head. He explained slowly. "Martial Artists develop their body as their focus, unlocking their seven senses for fighting to be invincible in close combat. Mages train their sensitivity to spiritual energy, allowing them to understand the flow of myriad phenomena and derive spells from it."

Zold paused, then continued.

"But what about Manifestors?"

"Manifestors integrate their external manifestations as part of their identity, making it an inseparable part of their existence. To be precise, a Manifestor shouldn’t treat their talent as something ’external’ but rather something that comes from their ’soul’. Once you understand that fully, you would be able to establish a soul link with your talent."

"A soul link allows you to decrease the limitations of your manifestation and derive more ways to use it. I recommend you to start understanding your manifestation more deeply. Consider using it in your everyday life."

Akihito nodded slowly, albeit still confused.

"But captain, is the difference between someone that entered an expression path and someone that hasn’t really that big?" He asked hesitantly.

Zold glanced at him, answering slowly.

"Why do you think you can’t even get near me?"

Akihito replied awkwardly. "... Isn’t that because you’re too strong?"

Sensing his confusion, Zold didn’t continue explaining.

No matter how much he simplified his words, it wouldn’t get through.

The difference between someone with an expression path and one without was something that could only be understood through experience.

The best way was either to fight someone that entered an expression path, or enter an expression path themselves.

In this matter, he could help in giving them inspiration, but completing the exercises and understanding the true power of their talents rested solely on themselves.

For example, Leo and Lia.

Recalling those twins, they were truly ultra talented to have comprehend their expression paths in just a few days.

He wouldn’t be surprised if they made a name for themselves in the future.

Zold shook his head. That was no longer any of his concern after he left them.

"Alright, this training session ends here. You’ll understand if you keep working hard."

He said, turning around.

But before he could leave, somebody suddenly entered the facility.

He shifted his gaze, seeing that it was only Namita.

Namita saw him and waved his hands.

"Captain. The Chairman is calling for us. I’m here to take Akihito. I think we’re being assigned a new mission."

Zold paused for a moment, then replied. "Do whatever you want. You’re the Captain, now."

Hearing that, Namita had a helpless expression.

Recalling three days ago, Chairman Nagito had called him to his office to tell him that Zold would be stepping down as the captain temporarily.

As the helper Zold brought from Lunaria, Namita was assigned as the captain by Chairman Nagito during Zold’s absence.

Although he didn’t understand why Zold stepped down, but he had no choice but to take his position for the time being.

’Especially since he hasn’t ordered me to do anything yet...’

Once Zold’s back disappeared from their view, he glanced at Akihito.

"Looks like you had a tough time," Namita commented, seeing the heavy amounts of blood soaked on Akihito’s shirt and around him.

Akihito smiled wryly. "You should know."

Namita shook his head slightly, not wanting to recall it.

As of now, every member of the 13th Demon Hunter Squad had experienced being trained and mentored by Zold, and every session ended as a nightmare for all of them.

A moment later, Akihito stood up, wearing the iconic demon hunter uniform.

Namita nodded slightly.

Then, the two started walking towards Nagito’s office.

"Do you know what the mission is about?" Akihito asked casually.

"A little," Namita nodded calmly, crossing his arms. "I heard that it’s an SSS-class mission, and other squads besides us are also participating."

"Other squads? It’s a cooperation mission?"

Akihito was surprised.

"Yeah," Namita explained. "Apparently, Master Kimoto’s disappearance five days ago had caused a sensation all over the world, especially in Nihono. A lot of ’rats’ are coming out after the recent news."

Rats referred to rogue awakeners.

Akihito frowned, clicking his tongue. "What could they possibly want?"

"Hm, about that..." Namita thought for a moment before speaking. "What else? Demonic Armanents. It’s the next big thing."

"But aren’t objects possessed by demonic spirits random? How could they know which ones are Demonic Armanents?" Akihito asked.

"I don’t know, but some theorize it’s connected to the history of an item," Namita said. "Apparently, Demonic Spirits are more gravitated to negative emotions and evil auras. Weapons of war are more likely to be possessed by them. Nihono has a lot of them."

Akihito narrowed his eyes, thinking deeply.

Before they knew it, the two of them arrived in front of the office.

They pushed the door slightly, seeing a familiar person.

It was Arima, the Captain of the 1st Demon Hunter Squad.
