Global Game: Developing a Knight Clan-Chapter 121 - 119: Underground City Adventure, Class Changers Appear
Dawn City.
In the dead of night, a bonfire burned brightly on the mountaintop.
York and several dozen Transcendents stood before the Magic Array at the entrance to the Underground City.
They were silent, every one of them gazing quietly at the Underground City’s Magic Array.
At last, when the Magic Array suddenly flared with light, the expressions on everyone’s faces finally changed.
Someone was coming out!
It was an old veteran of the City Guard.
"My Lord City Lord!"
The veteran stepped out of the Magic Array and immediately strode over to York, dropping to one knee.
"Excellent! Soldier, tell me, what class did you awaken?"
"Reporting to the City Lord. My name is Wood, and my current class is Level 1 Lancer. The system indicated that I can advance to the Ordinary Warrior class after reaching Level 10."
"Right now, I only have one Skill, Spear Thrust, with no special properties. However, I am now able to sense Magic Power. With each Level I gain, I can allocate what are called ’points’ into my existing Skills. These Skills then deal progressively more damage to Demons in the Underground City."
The soldier gave a detailed report on his class panel, and under questioning from the crowd, he quickly recounted his experience inside the Underground City.
It turns out the Underground City has so-called challenge levels.
Level 1-10 (Extremely Simple, First Floor: must remain in the Underground City for a minimum of one hour, after which one can choose to leave freely. Maximum stay: five hours.)
Level 11-20 (Simple, Second Floor: must remain in the Underground City for a minimum of five hours, after which one can choose to leave freely. Maximum stay: twelve hours.)
Level 21-30 (Normal, Third Floor: must remain in the Underground City for a minimum of twelve hours, after which one can choose to leave freely. Maximum stay: one day.)
There are three challenge levels, and you are teleported to one at random. Each floor also contains an Elite Demon room, which is a Combat Beast-style fight. Every Adventurer can choose whether to initiate the Elite Demon challenge at any time.
Once the challenge begins, the battle will not end until one side is dead.
An Adventurer cannot leave the Underground City during this process. Furthermore, if an Adventurer at Level 10 wishes to advance their class, they must challenge the Elite Demon. Otherwise, their Level will not increase any further.
Those who challenge and defeat it early can successfully break past Level 10, complete their class advancement, and even enter the second floor at any time.
In short, everything the soldier said immediately gave the old man beside York a general assessment of the current Underground City.
"It seems I was right. This god-gifted Underground City is a lower-grade, single-player challenge type."
"According to the records, single-player Underground Cities have the lowest mortality rate. As long as you don’t challenge the Elite Demon, an Adventurer on the first floor will encounter no more than three Demons at a time, no more than five on the second floor, and no more than ten on the third."
"Once a battle begins, no new Demons will appear in the vicinity. This largely guarantees that Adventurers will have enough time to rest after each fight."
"However, you can’t rest for more than fifteen minutes. There’s a penalty for staying inactive for too long, and if you trigger it, it’s very difficult to get out alive."
Chuck looked at York with a solemn expression as he spoke.
"Old Man Chuck isn’t wrong, but his explanation is incomplete."
Just then, another old man at York’s side began to speak.
"My Lord City Lord, the records state that the first floor of a lower-grade Underground City isn’t very large. During their explorations, a lone Adventurer is quite likely to encounter other Adventurers. If two of them decide to explore together, the Underground City’s difficulty will increase accordingly."
"Furthermore, while you can challenge the Elite Demon at any time for the first five levels of a given floor, once you enter the latter five levels of that floor’s range, you have to explore the entire floor to find its room before you can challenge it. In other words, the ability to ’challenge anytime’ is just a facade. Most Adventurers who dare to accept the challenge early will die a brutal death."
"Of course, an Adventurer carrying some kind of powerful item might have a chance, but it’s a slim one. The Underground City has its own judgment system. In most cases of ’cheating,’ the Demons an Adventurer encounters will simply become stronger, perhaps even exceeding the strength appropriate for that floor."
"However, according to records from a hundred years ago, such ’cheating’ items do exist. They are also products of the Underground City itself, but they are exceptionally rare."
"As for what they are specifically, we no longer know."
"Also, even if a single-player Underground City has the lowest difficulty, when it comes to the Elite Demon challenge, you’d be lucky if three to five out of every ten people at the Black Iron Level manage to pass."
"And the deeper you go into the Underground City, the more unexpected factors there are, and the higher the death rate becomes. This is no child’s play."
The old man shot Chuck a look, raising his eyebrows, before turning back to York and speaking respectfully.
York listened to everything the two had said.
He sank into thought, then nodded.
He then looked down at the piece of linen and the finger-sized bottle of potion in his hand, his expression filled with bewilderment.
’Killing monsters drops cloth? And Magic Potions?’
’What is all this stuff?’
The "experience" the soldier had mentioned also made York curious.
’Experience provides growth and lets you level up... so it’s similar to advancing in rank, I suppose?’
’Experience? Shouldn’t that refer to the gradual, natural growth that comes from Meditation and practicing Martial Techniques?’
’But what is going on with this world? You get experience from killing monsters in an Underground City, and that experience lets you ’level up’ and grow quickly?’
