Greatest Legacy of the Magus Universe-Chapter 726: Spine of the Serpent
"My Lord, that phantom…" Adam muttered with disbelief, "Was that your real strength?"
"Real?" Lord White arched an eyebrow in amusement. "Young Magus, have you forgotten that I am but a clone?"
Adam froze.
Indeed, the old man standing before him was but a clone made from a scale of Lord White's true body!
If just a clone of Lord White can release such overbearing power, then what about his true body? The youth thought to himself incredulously.
"Although I am a clone and was able to swiftly deal with the remnant will of this serpent, you must understand that this little one has been dead for tens of thousands of years," explained the old man.
"The more time passes, the weaker its will becomes," he concluded. "Moreover, this weapon was forged over hundreds of years, made from the most precious ores and minerals that Syvarin found in his travels."
Adam nodded in a daze. He thought of something and asked, "My Lord, you mentioned the body of this staff was made from the spine of the dark serpent."
He glanced at the staff which was only a little taller than him and couldn't help but remark, "But how come it's so small…"
Lord White's lips curled into a playful smirk. He grabbed the staff from the youth's hand and then placed one end on the ground.
His lips parted and he muttered a single word in snaketongue.
"Expand."
BOOOM!!
The unassuming staff which was only a little taller than Adam suddenly turned into a towering behemoth that pierced through the clouds.
Not only its height, but even its width had exponentially increased. From a staff, it had transformed into a titanic pillar that seemed to support the sky!
At this point, Adam's jaw had turned agape and his eyes had widened in disbelief.
Only now did he truly believe that the staff was made from the spine of an ancient serpent said to coil around mountain ranges and destroy continents with its colossal body.
Before the youth even had time to recover from his shock, Lord White sent another command in snaketongue.

"Shrink."
BOOOM!!
With a resounding sound that echoed all across the lands, the towering pillar of a staff shrunk rapidly. In but a few moments, it had contracted to the size of a toothpick!
Lord White tossed the tiny staff no bigger or thicker than the size of a toothpick toward the youth. "This is one of the abilities of the staff," said he.
"It can grow and shrink according to the wielder's will. Of course, since I have placed severe restrictions on the weapon, you won't be able to expand it to the size I just displayed."
Adam looked at the toothpick-sized staff in his palms with a dumbfounded gaze. He didn't even hear what the old serpent had just said.
A long time later, he regained his senses and commanded in snake tongue, "Expand!"
Under his stunned gaze, the staff had grown to a size of little more than six meters. That was around three times his height!
"Shrink," he commanded, willing it in his mind to return to the default size.
The staff returned to the size it had initially been—a head taller than him.
Just thinking about how he could take his enemies by surprise with the staff's miraculous reach, he felt exhilarated.
"The other ability is its weight," said Lord White. "Even in its shortened form, its weight is enough to crush boulders. But this is only because I've placed runic constraints on it. The stronger you grow, the heavier its weight becomes."
He paused for a moment before adding, "Of course, just like the staff's height, you can freely control its weight. However, its default weight is still considerably heavy. But that shouldn't be a problem for you."
Adam felt like he could cry tears of joy as he gazed at the staff like it was his long-lost lover.
"There is one other ability," Lord White suddenly said.
"What is it?!" Adam excitedly asked. The two abilities of the staff that he knew were simply amazing. He couldn't wait to learn about the third.
"Throw it as far as you can," said the ancient snake.
Adam nodded. Then without hesitation, he used all his strength and threw the staff. The weapon tore through the air and landed at the foot of the mountain range in the distance.
Looking at the place where the staff had landed, Lord White arched an eyebrow in slight surprise, "Your strength is not bad."
He then turned to look at the raven-haired youth and spoke, "Now command it to return."
Adam recalled the way Lord White had called forth the weapon when they had earlier teleported here.
Then, he stretched his right hand and made a grasping motion, solemnly commanding, "Return."
BOOOM!!
The ground underneath the weapon rumbled, and then with another resounding explosion, it shot into the sky and tore through the air before firmly landing in the raven-haired youth's grip.
"Hahaha!" Adam laughed loudly, his eyes flashing with immense joy. He was like a child who had found his favorite toy.
In the minutes that followed, Adam casually swung the staff around. Sometimes he swung the staff horizontally, other times he thrust it forward.
He rotated the staff before him, creating a spinning barrier, and then delivered an overhead smash, slamming the staff to the ground and causing it to split apart.
Adam glanced at the weapon and grinned from ear to ear.
I wonder if I can incorporate the techniques of the Hand of Doom into this…
He turned to look at Lord White, who had been silently watching him swing the staff around and bowed sincerely. "Thank you, my lord. I am truly grateful for this and… for you."
"Hmm." The ancient serpent hummed and then casually weaved a simple hand seal.
The staff in Adam's hand hummed with magical energy and suddenly he could feel a deep connection to it.
"The staff is now bound to you," said Lord White. "When you return to the material world, make sure to carve your mana signature into it. That will be a time-consuming process, but in the mean time, you can still wield it like it were your own."
"Yes, my lord!" Adam stated, his dark eyes flashing with anticipation.
Suddenly, he thought of something and couldn't help but ask the ancient serpent, "My Lord, does this staff have a name?"
Lord White slowly nodded, his lips gradually forming a smirk.
"Staff of Calamity."
