Chapter 786: Settling In IV

The basic training drills at Tottenham were not much different from what Jason did at his previous clubs, but when they moved to tactical training Jason began to note differences.

Nuno’s style of coaching was a defensive minded style where the players compressed and sat behind the ball when out of possession.

His style prioritized structural stability, low-block defending, and rapid, vertical counter attacks.

They focused less on keeping possession and more on waiting patiently for their opponent to slip up so they could hit them with a rapid counter attack.

They aimed to hurt the opposition with every counter attack.

In all honesty, it was not how a big team with stronger players like Tottenham players would normally play, but then Jason figured that the manager’s playing style was a result of his player career as a goalkeeper and the fact that he had mostly coached smaller teams.

Not that he cared much to change it.

As long as it worked, he would play how the manager wanted even though it was a bit annoying to have to spend most of the game defending.

Also, Jason was kind of used to the playing style, especially since he had mostly played in smaller teams in his previous life.

Taking position on the field, he went through the defensive shape training, the transition press training, positional movement training, and build-up patterns when they began the counter attacks.

Since the main team tactic style was always used by the younger age teams, it didn’t matter much that most of the starting players were not available at the training ground.

Cameras recorded the training session, but quite a few camera were trained on the newer players.

Between 10:30am and 12:00pm, they did the main training session.

After the main session was over, the players who didn’t have any positioning or conditioning work left to rest and cool down while the other first team players continued more training.

Crossing and finishing, sprint work, and set-piece training were all being done on various parts of the training grounds.

Jason has been added to the set-piece training group as set-piece were one of his strengths.

Jason did a few rounds of free-kicks against the goalkeeper as it doubled as extra training for the goalkeeper as well.

He did long and short free-kicks and a few corners before he left to join the crossing and finishing session.

After another hour at work, the additional session ended and the players left for a small cool down and recovery session.

Jason did a some stretches before jumping into an ice bath for a few minutes to cool off his muscles before rounding things up with a shower and changing into a fresh kit and going for lunch.

The lunch was the last thing on his schedule at the training ground for the day as for one, he wouldn’t be allowed to train any further and secondly, he had to go check out some houses.

"So how was your first day?"

Jason looked up to see Kane sliding into the seat next to him.

"Pretty okay. How was your fitness tests and all that?"

"How soon will you be cleared to play?" Jason asked.

"In about 2 weeks. I was out for a bit more than I should so I’ll miss the opening week of the season," Kane muttered, diving into his lunch.

"... So, you’re going to be playing on the right? We do need more depth on that side, but you’re going to have to battle with Lucas for a spot," Kane began again.

"Well, it’s probably more like you’ll need to battle for your own spot cuz I’m sending him back over to the center," Jason replied with a little smirk.

"Lucas over me? That’s not even a topic," Kane laughed, amused at the thought.

"I can say the same," Jason shrugged.

"You’ve got quite the confidence. Hope you can make good on that," Kane chuckled.

He had mostly been getting along with Jason as a formality, but he could not deny that he had been curious.

He had even spent some time watching highlights of Jason’s previous games. 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Part of it was to know what his new teammate could do and adjust himself mentally to prepare for it. The other was because he was particularly curious.

Long story short, he had been a bit mind blown after watching the videos of Jason that had been put together by fans and his former clubs.

Clearly, it would be exciting to play with someone who could bring such a level of football to the team, but Kane hadn’t instantly been sold on Jason.

It was not the first time that players who were seemingly very talented came over to the premier league only to turn into something lesser.

Sometimes it was the mentality, sometimes it was the different playing style, sometimes it was the level of responsibility required...

Different problems could lead to less than pleasant results and though Kane didn’t know whether Jason would perform at the level everyone expected or play at a less than expected level, Kane could only hope for the former.

Of course, there was a third option where Jason hit even higher levels of performance, but honestly, not many people were expecting that.

That usually takes a couple of seasons at least.

For now, most people expected a decline in Jason’s dribble numbers, even the goals and assists, after all, this was the Prem.

It was already difficult enough for strikers to hit crazy numbers, much less the wingers in the league.

Jason hadn’t thought that far though and he didn’t really care what people expected of him.

All he knew was what he expected of himself and for someone like him who was especially strict on himself, his dreams were definitely not small.

The players who had only had recovery sessions soon joined Jason and the other players at lunch.

Being in charge of helping Jason get settled in, Son was very interested in Jason’s opinion of what he had seen so far and anything he wanted to talk about.

Thus the players spent their lunch time discussing many things.
