Chapter 88: Handicapped Fight

Translator: ShiroiKaze/Soyokaze Translations

At dinner that night, I was sitting on Marleโ€™s lap, wearing a frilly dress as we ate. ฦ’๐ซ๐’†๐žw๐—ฒ๐š‹๐—ปเซฆ๐˜ทe๐™ก.c๐‘œ๐™ข

โ€œOkay Yuuri, say โ€˜aaahโ€™.โ€

โ€œA-aaahโ€ฆโ€

I bite down on the stew she brings to my mouth and chew.

As for why things turned out like thisโ€ฆ

~*~

โ€œYou said you would tone it down, didnโ€™t you?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ Yes.โ€

โ€œYou even hurt Marle.โ€

โ€œIโ€™m sorry.โ€

I was forced to sit on my knees in front of Haster.

I had been listening to his scolding for nearly two hours.

That just makes sense though. I lost all self-restraint and unleashed a secret spell, developed for large-scale destruction, at the slightest provocation. Even I can only see my actions as idiotic.

โ€œWhy did you do something like that?โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆ Wellโ€ฆ Iโ€™m sorry.โ€

Itโ€™s because Iโ€™m immature.

Heโ€™s probably more angry than the time when I blew up the cottage.

I trust him, so I donโ€™t think heโ€™ll toss me out like I thought back then, butโ€ฆ I got frustrated with how pathetic I am, and the tears started welling up.

โ€œIโ€™mโ€ฆ Sniffโ€ฆ Sorโ€ฆโ€

โ€œUmm, Mister Haster, I am perfectly fine now, so maybe you could stopโ€”โ€œ

โ€œNo. What if Yuuri were to run wild in the labyrinth at some point? It may be harsh, but she needs to realize the importance of self-restraint.โ€

โ€œI believe she is well aware of it! Soโ€ฆโ€

Marle putting on such a threatening look was so unusual that Haster faltered for a moment, and then looked at me.

Me, who had gotten all sloppy with tears and snot.

I donโ€™t really want him to see me like this. But since Iโ€™m sitting on my knees and being scolded, I canโ€™t really go hiding my face right now.

โ€œHaaโ€ฆ Fine. Then you get to give Yuuri her penalty. After that Iโ€™ll chastise her, and this matter will be over.โ€

โ€œEh?! Y-you want me toโ€ฆ?โ€

He breathed a sigh and decided on my punishment.

For some reason he looks like a boy playing a prank right now though.

โ€œYes, but it has to be a real punishment, okay?โ€

โ€œSis can take most anything, so no need to hold anything back.โ€

โ€œButโ€ฆ Oh, but? Hmmmโ€ฆโ€

She appeared to be having trouble deciding something.

With a quick peek she looked over to me, held down her noseโ€ฆ Hold on a minute. Thatโ€™s the pose Haster usually takes when he gets excited, isnโ€™t it?

Why would sheโ€ฆ I have a bad feeling about this.

โ€œIn that caseโ€ฆ Iโ€™ve always wanted a doll, soโ€ฆโ€

โ€œOho?โ€

โ€œW-waitโ€ฆโ€

โ€œYou have no right to speak at the moment Yuuri.โ€

โ€œUghu?!โ€

โ€œI want Yuuri to play doll for me.โ€

โ€˜Forโ€™? Not โ€˜withโ€™, but โ€˜forโ€™?!

โ€œM-meaning?โ€

โ€œDressing you up, doing your hairโ€ฆ Oh, Iโ€™d like to feed you too.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™sโ€ฆ Perfect.โ€

โ€œNo it isnโ€™t!โ€

โ€œIt is a penalty.โ€

โ€œAugh?!โ€

โ€œCome to think of it, sis doesnโ€™t wear a lot of fancy dresses, huh? Plenty of simple ones and rougher outfits though.โ€

Enjoying rough clothes is a carryover from when I was a man.

I wear simpler dresses because theyโ€™re comfortable, butโ€ฆ Fancier ones are annoying, cramped, and I just donโ€™t like them.

โ€œOutfits that stay tight around the body areโ€ฆ I donโ€™t like restrictive clothes.โ€

โ€œReally? I think they would look good on you though.โ€

โ€œAll the more reason if you donโ€™t like it. This is a โ€œpenaltyโ€ after all.โ€

โ€œHaster, your true motives are showing through.โ€

โ€œTh-they most certainly are not. Probablyโ€ฆโ€

He averted his gaze in a cold sweat. And thatโ€™s when his reinforcements arrived.

Miss Levy and Miss Remy.

โ€œHey, yaโ€™ll let me join in coordinatinโ€˜ the outfits.โ€

โ€œNo fair! Let me get in on this too!โ€

โ€œWhen did you two even get here?!โ€

โ€œCโ€™mon weโ€™re a party. Iโ€™ll still let ya take the lead, Marle.โ€

โ€œIโ€™ve got a bunch of good outfits on hand. If you like, we could even buy new onesโ€ฆโ€

And so I was used as a dress-up doll for all sorts of costumes before eventually ending up on Marleโ€™s lap, eating.

~*~

Groanโ€ฆ

My butt fidgeted around as I sought some stable comfort.

Even though Iโ€™ve mostly gotten better in these five years, I still canโ€™t relax when coming in bodily contact with anyone other than Haster.

If it wasnโ€™t her, I probably would have already turned into the puking heroine.

Describing it in different levels, Haster is at the โ€œtouch me moreโ€ level, while Alec and Marle are at the โ€œcanโ€™t relaxโ€ level.

Moreover, I would put Miss Levy very clearly at the โ€œget away from me alreadyโ€ level.

Going even further, a complete stranger would be at the โ€œIโ€™ll fucking kill you, assholeโ€ level.

โ€œHey, Yuuri, that tickles, you know? Hold still.โ€

โ€œI just canโ€™t seem to calm down like this. And these clothes are constraining.โ€

โ€œEeeh~? But Miss Remy went out of her way to give them to us. And besides, youโ€™re going to spill your food if you donโ€™t stay put.โ€

โ€œShe told Haster, โ€œyou can get them dirty,โ€ so Iโ€™m sure itโ€™s fine.โ€

As for why she would say that to himโ€ฆ Okay, yeah, I know why. Weโ€™re probably going into extra innings tonight.

โ€œYou know itโ€™s okay if you canโ€™t take any more? You donโ€™t need to push yourself.โ€

โ€œI-Iโ€™m fine. This is a punishment, so Iโ€™ll give it my all until I canโ€™t any more.โ€

โ€œI guess youโ€™re still not okay with me, huh?โ€

Her expression turned a little sad.

Itโ€™s been two years since meeting her. In that period, I can count the number of times weโ€™ve made physical contact.

Maybe she wasnโ€™t satisfied with that?

โ€œThatโ€™s not how it is. Aside from Haster, youโ€™re number one, Marle.โ€

I tried making a little excuse why patting Marleโ€™s head.

Well, itโ€™s true sheโ€™s the one Iโ€™m most calm around besides Haster thoughโ€ฆ

With a young girl comforting a young girl, the mood in the restaurant turned warm and comforting.

โ€œIf this was Alecโ€™s lap, Iโ€™m sure I would puke.โ€

โ€œWow, harsh much?!โ€

โ€œThen do you want to test it?โ€

โ€œNo, thanks.โ€

Surely he didnโ€™t want to be covered in puke while eating. He refused in haste.

And so I was turned into Marleโ€™s โ€œdollโ€ for a week.

Also, the long nights were even more fierce than usual.

Nights are harsh when your husband is a total demon.

~*~

Well now, a week passed since then. Marle stepped out of the party, and Miss Levy joined us in her place as we began searching floor two and above.

โ€œSeriously though, are yaโ€™ll really beginnersโ€ฆ? I ainโ€™t never marched along this easily before.โ€

Miss Levyโ€™s grumbling is understandable.

Weโ€™re already at the fourth floor. Normally this would be the farthest we could reach in a day.

And we already got there before two in the afternoon.

This is the result of using [Sonar] to find enemies, avoid them or otherwise intercept them, and advancing at a ferocious pace.

With this spellโ€™s effects, the positions of enemies aside, I can even figure out the entire landscape within 300 meters, so we hardly even get lost.

โ€œIโ€™d like for us to try beating the guardian on the fifth floor if we can, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œThis pace is perfect if thatโ€™s the goal, isnโ€™t it?โ€

โ€œWe didnโ€™t tell Marle we would be camping in here, and if we wanted to get back today we would only barely make it.โ€

โ€œThis ainโ€™t the conversation of a party on their tenth day in the labyrinth, yโ€™knowโ€ฆ? I was gonna keep all quiet since itโ€™s yaโ€™llโ€™s first time this far along, but there wasnโ€™t no point in that by the looks of it.โ€

Riding along at our current pace, we climbed further along to the fifth floor. Following practically the shortest route possible, we arrived in front of what looked like a boss room.

โ€œAnโ€™ we really went anโ€™ made itโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWhich means this is the boss room?โ€

โ€œYeah, butโ€ฆ If I go on in, nothinโ€™s gonna appear.โ€

โ€œHuh? Why?โ€

โ€œโ€˜Cause I done beat it once already. Some reason, any boss ya beat once donโ€™t come back to fight ya again.โ€

So that means something like individual flags are set up?

But that means weโ€™ll have to fight it without the support of someone, like her, whoโ€™s had experience with the boss.

โ€œWell, itโ€™ll be fine. Probably.โ€

โ€œHeck, weโ€™re aiming for the top floor. We should each be able to solo the first boss.โ€

Alec is as optimistic as ever.

Itโ€™s already four oโ€™clock.

If we wrap this battle up nice and quick, then take the shortest route backโ€ฆ Maybe we could get back by eight oโ€™clock?

โ€œAlright, all members, begin weapon inspections. If all is well, weโ€™ll head right in for the attack!โ€

โ€œRiiiight.โ€

โ€œGot it.โ€

While I was inspecting my weapons, a short bow and Third Eye, Haster called over to me.

โ€œYuuri, no [Body Reinforcement] this time unless itโ€™s absolutely necessary.โ€

โ€œHm? Why?โ€

โ€œBecause itโ€™s not fair. We wouldnโ€™t get any actual training out of this.โ€

I can use it about three times a day, so I figured using it against the boss would be appropriate, butโ€ฆ

If weโ€™re talking unfair, then how are Haster with Cleaver and Alec with Sentinel any better?

โ€œWell, itโ€™s not like we have any other weapons. Even so, Iโ€™d like for us to get experience fighting as close a battle as possible. To do that, we need to restrict ourselves a bit.โ€

โ€œHmm~ a slowroll, huh? But isnโ€™t the boss here weak enough that I could make it kick the bucket if I just use a [Wind Blade] on it?โ€

โ€œRollโ€ฆ? Er, yeah, I know you could take it out in one hit and all, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œWell, if you really want to have a tough fight, then Iโ€™ll keep my magic sealed away. How about you try using your long sword, Haster?โ€

With either [Body Reinforcement] or โ€œreinforced weapons,โ€ the battle would hardly be very battle-like.

Even the fights on the way here were all practically like chasing off bugs.

He seemed either unsatisfied or, more likely, anxious about something when I said that. Possibly a sense of danger that comes with letting our guard down.

โ€œAs for Alecโ€ฆ He needs his gift, so I guess thereโ€™s not much we can do there.โ€

โ€œYeah, probably not. I use Sentinel for defense too, so I would actually be worried about getting any bad habits from using other weapons.โ€

โ€œThen you focus on defense, Alec. The main attackers will be me and Yuuri with her bow. Levy, weโ€™ll call for you when the battleโ€™s over, so just wait here for us. Iโ€™d like to see how far we can get like this.โ€

โ€œGotโ€™cha.โ€

She should be fine on her own for a bit with her โ€œRecognition Blocking.โ€

Heck, she went solo before anyway, right?

Well then, no magic, Third Eye, or Cleaver, plus Sentinel is essentially sealed off. Weโ€™ll have our first boss battle with hardly any of our main fighting strength?

Even Iโ€™m a little worried about this, you knowโ€ฆ? Actually, I feel like this doesnโ€™t make any logical sense.

โ€œI feel like weโ€™ve been getting a little slack lately. Donโ€™t you think getting some feeling of tension back might be good for us, now that weโ€™ve come this far?โ€

โ€œHmmmโ€ฆ Iโ€™m getting more of a โ€œyouโ€™re going that far?โ€ kind of feeling.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s fine. Levy, do you have information on our opponent?โ€

โ€œโ€˜Course I do.โ€

According to Levy, the boss is the Kobold Lord, along with some kobold archers.

Apparently itโ€™s a larger version of the kobolds that were on the first floor. The archers are just like they sound; theyโ€™re a bunch of them equipped with bows.

I guess its large hatchet attacks are strong enough to be comparable to a trollโ€™s? And itโ€™s as tough as one well.

Are the long distance attacks from the archers going to be a problem?

โ€œIn other words, we may as well think of it like fighting a trollโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIt ainโ€™t got the same regenerative abilities as them, so actually itโ€™s a little weaker.โ€

โ€œThat would be a little rough for most novicesโ€ฆ And thatโ€™s why this is the first hurdle for beginners, huh?โ€

โ€œKeepinโ€™ hold of a vigilant attitude after spendinโ€™ a long time here in the labyrinth ainโ€™t somethinโ€™ some skill-less idiot relyinโ€™ on strength alone can pull off so easy. So itโ€™s the wall any olโ€™ novice has to climb if they wanna become a beginner.โ€

โ€œIt is pretty normal for enemy monsters to be physically stronger than humans, after all.โ€

A breakaway from fighting by relying on strength alone. Thatโ€™s a point any adventurer will have to reach eventually.

โ€œOkay, are we ready?โ€

โ€œAll set.โ€

โ€œWatch out for the bows, Yuuri?โ€

โ€œJust leave it to me.โ€ ๐˜ง๐“‡๐—ฒ๐‘’we๐™—noัต๐‘’l.๐œo๐˜ฎ

My reflexes are one of my strong points. Iโ€™ve got more than enough agility to dodge a few arrows. Probably.

โ€œYeah, counting on you. Right thenโ€ฆ Letโ€™s go!โ€

With a trace of apprehension on his face, he placed his hand on the door.

And so our first boss battle in the labyrinth, a handicapped match, began.
