He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 104: Let’s Not Meet Again in the Next Life
"You’re talking more and more nonsense." Her words threw his once-calm heart into turmoil. "Haven’t you been taking your medicine on time? I’ll have a doctor come over later to prescribe you something new."
"Theodore Grant." She was still smiling, the dimples at the corners of her mouth making her so beautiful it was hard to look away. "If there’s a next life, let’s not meet again."
The man took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "You... get some rest."
Theodore Grant turned and left.
He didn’t know if it was because of the strange things Natalie Morgan had said or if it was the uncomfortable fabric of his new suit, which was causing an irritating itch on his neck.
In a fit of annoyance, he took it off and tossed it to Weller Kendall.
Weller Kendall quickly caught it. "Mr. Grant, are we going home or back to the office?"
"Go home to what? Is anyone even there? Damn it, I’m married but it’s like I’m not." He didn’t know where the rage was coming from as he slammed the car door.
Weller Kendall’s heart jumped, and he quickly opened the passenger door and slid inside.
"Mr. Grant, is your wife not doing well? Perhaps we should bring her home," Weller Kendall asked tentatively.
Theodore Grant pinched the bridge of his nose, his expression grim.
"Bring her back? You think she’ll stop pissing me off then? Running off to be a dancer in a place like that, letting men touch her and kiss her, even getting a hotel room with one..." The thought made Theodore Grant so furious he could have ground his teeth to dust. "...Weller, if your wife did that, wouldn’t you be angry?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝙬𝙚𝓫𝒏𝓸𝓿𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝙤𝓶
’He’s right.’
’Anyone would be angry.’
’This isn’t about love. It’s a matter of pride.’
"Your wife is young and naive. Give her a chance to apologize."
"Naive?" The man exhaled slowly. "She’s not so naive when she wants to make someone angry."
The car slowly pulled away, heading toward the Grant Group headquarters.
Ever since the hotel room incident, Felix Finch had been locked up by the Finch Family.
Serena Sutton went to the Finch Group hospital but couldn’t find Felix Finch.
She waited at the hospital entrance for a while and was just about to leave when a dark van pulled up to the curb.
Two young men got out first, followed by Felix Finch, who was helping his grandfather out of the vehicle.
"Dr. Finch." Serena Sutton hurried over. "Sorry to bother you, could I have two minutes of your time?"
Felix Finch handed his grandfather over to the aides. "Take my grandfather inside. I’ll be right there."
Felix Finch turned to look at Serena Sutton.
"Claire? Is something wrong?"
"Dr. Finch, there is something, actually. I was hoping you could help." Serena Sutton then concisely explained Natalie Morgan’s predicament. "That’s the situation. She asked me to come to you. Are you willing to help, Dr. Finch?"
Felix Finch was stunned.
"Theodore... he really sent Natalie to Unity Hospital?"
Shock and disbelief were not enough to describe how he felt at that moment.
"Yes."
"He’s completely insane." Felix Finch gasped. "Doesn’t he know that staying in a place like that for too long will destroy a person?"
’How could Theodore Grant not know? This is exactly the outcome he wanted.’
Serena Sutton pressed her lips together. "He’s getting engaged to Wanda Lynch on the eighteenth. If you’re willing to help Nattie, Dr. Finch..."
"Say no more." He looked at Serena Sutton with determination. "I’ll help Natalie, but you have to give me a few days to make the necessary preparations."
"Of course." Serena Sutton nodded gratefully. "Dr. Finch, if Natalie knew you were willing to help, she would be so grateful."
"I don’t want her gratitude. I just want..." His gaze clouded over and darkened. "...for her to be happy."
"She will be."
Lucas Grant took full charge of all the engagement arrangements.
To prevent any last-minute problems, Lucas Grant summoned Theodore Grant several days beforehand.
"You’re about to be engaged to Wanda Lynch. Are you ready?" he warned.
Theodore Grant seemed completely unconcerned.
With a cigarette between his fingers, he regarded his father with an almost lazy indifference.
"Did I say I was getting engaged to her?"
"If you don’t get engaged to her, who will?" Lucas Grant gestured at the decorated engagement venue. "It’s all been arranged. What do you propose we do now?"
"Did I ask for any of this?" He stubbed out his cigarette, glancing around the romantic venue. "Whoever set this up can be the one to get engaged."
"You..." Lucas Grant raised his hand and slapped Theodore Grant across the face, his fingertips trembling with rage. "...Who am I doing all this for? Isn’t it for the Grant Group? What’s the big deal about you making a small sacrifice? Besides, don’t you love Wanda Lynch? You sent Natalie Morgan to an asylum for her, so why are you refusing now?"
A muscle in Theodore Grant’s jaw twitched.
He sneered.
’Love?’
’I don’t even know what love is.’
’What is love, anyway?’
’Is it possession? Jealousy? Or screaming until you break down?’
’I don’t know.’
’And I don’t even know why I’m refusing to get engaged to Wanda Lynch.’
’I can’t explain this feeling inside me.’
’Is it resistance?’
’Repulsion?’
’Or the feeling of being trapped?’
"It’s not the right time."
"What do you mean, ’not the right time’? Things have already come to this. Even if you don’t want to, just go through the motions and get it over with. You can find an excuse to break off the engagement later. How hard can that be?" Not wanting a complete fallout with his son, Lucas Grant’s tone softened. "Theodore, if you’re willing to cooperate on this, I can take back my proposal to have Sean Lane join the Grant Group."
Theodore Grant knew it was just a stalling tactic from Lucas Grant, and he wasn’t interested.
"Whether you want it or not, Sean Lane is never getting into the Grant Group."
"If I side with him and the board agrees, what good will your ’no’ do?"
Lucas Grant knew how much the Grant Group meant to Theodore, and that Sean Lane was the biggest threat in his son’s eyes.
Theodore Grant raised an eyebrow.
He looked up at Lucas Grant. "I recall that you ended up with two percent of Grandfather’s shares. If you’re willing to hand those over, I can agree to go through the motions for you."
Two percent of the Grant Group’s shares were worth billions.
How could Lucas Grant possibly part with that?
But then he remembered he had already secured ten percent of the department store shares. Adding in the plot of land from the Lynch Family, the value should far exceed this number. It wouldn’t be impossible to agree to Theodore’s terms; he could always go back on his word later.
"Fine. I agree to your terms."
"Agreeing so quickly?" Theodore Grant smiled, his expression unreadable. "Then let’s sign a contract first."
"I’m your father. You think I’d cheat you?" He knew his son’s temperament all too well—he would never let himself be taken advantage of. "After the engagement is finished, I’ll sign. It’s not like I can run away, can I?"
But Theodore Grant knew his father just as well and had no intention of being played. "Sign the contract first. Otherwise, the deal’s off."
"You..." As reluctant as he was, Lucas Grant gritted his teeth and relented. "...Fine, we’ll sign. But only a letter of intent for now. If you back out, I’ll have no recourse."
"Acceptable."
Father and son, neither trusted the other.
Each had their own calculations, their own ways of weighing the scales and keeping the other in check.
Felix Finch had to pull some strings and spend a bit of money just to get a chance to see Natalie Morgan.
He didn’t know if he was just being emotional, or if it was the sight of Natalie Morgan’s vacant, lifeless eyes that struck him so deeply, but he felt his own eyes begin to well with tears.
He was actually tearing up.
