He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 153: On the Verge of Death, Not Thinking Straight
Gratitude was one thing.
She could tell the difference between good and bad.
"Theodore Grant, just because you saved my son doesn’t make you a good person. You’re probably just like Felix Finch, harboring some ulterior motive."
She wouldn’t trust anyone ever again.
Including Theodore Grant.
The man scoffed.
Even though he had saved her son, in her heart, he was still fundamentally a dark, evil man.
No matter how many times he saved them, the result would be the same.
He shouldn’t have held onto any expectations in the first place.
The expectation that she would see him differently because of this.
The expectation that she would give him even a sliver of warmth in her gaze.
He understood that she wouldn’t show him any kindness or treat him any better.
In his world, such expectations were becoming more and more of a luxury.
Deep down, what he felt more than anything was a sense of helplessness.
He couldn’t quite say how angry he was.
It just hurt.
"Yes, I have ulterior motives. I’m a bad guy, a bastard. Happy now?"
Without even changing his shoes, he went straight upstairs.
An inexplicable emotion welled up inside Natalie Morgan.
She realized that her words might have been too harsh, too hurtful.
But that was truly what she thought.
’If a perfect gentleman like Felix Finch could turn to the dark side, how could someone like Theodore Grant, who was a bad guy to begin with, possibly become a purely good person?’
But now, she had to figure out why Felix Finch was targeting her baby.
Natalie Morgan thought of someone.
Claire Grant.
She had learned that Claire Grant’s relationship with Felix Finch used to be even better than Theodore Grant’s.
Perhaps she could find out something from her.
She chose a Friday afternoon, during teatime.
Natalie Morgan went to the Grant Group.
It was the first time the two had met in three years.
Claire Grant stared at the woman before her, unable to snap back to reality for a long moment.
Her eyes misted over. She tried to force a smile, but it came out awkward and strained.
Natalie Morgan spoke first. "Claire."
"Natalie?" Claire Grant pulled the other woman into a tight hug. "You’re alive. It’s so good to see you."
"I’m doing fine."
Claire Grant took Natalie Morgan’s hand and they sat down.
She was eager to know how she had been living these past few years.
Natalie Morgan told her everything truthfully, even revealing that Momo was Theodore Grant’s child.
"Then... does he know he’s a father?"
Natalie Morgan guessed he probably didn’t. "I haven’t told him, and I don’t want to."
"He’ll find out sooner or later." But as his sister, even she wasn’t sure if Theodore Grant would try to take the child. "Have you ever thought about what you’ll do if he finds out and tries to take the baby?"
A bitter smile touched Natalie Morgan’s lips. She didn’t think it was very likely. "Claire, if you think he doesn’t love me, do you really think he’ll love my baby? He has plenty of opportunities to marry a woman he loves and have a child he loves. He won’t care about this one."
Her words seemed to make some sense.
But Claire Grant felt uneasy hearing them.
No matter what, the child was part of the Grant family.
The Grant Family had a responsibility to care for and raise him.
Claire Grant took out a card and handed it to Natalie Morgan. "There’s some money in here. Think of it as a first-meeting gift from me, his aunt, to my nephew."
"Claire, I have money. Please, take the card back." Natalie Morgan hadn’t come for money; she had something more important to discuss. "I actually came today to ask about Felix Finch."
Claire Grant had heard some rumors about Natalie Morgan and Felix Finch.
So when Natalie Morgan asked, the first thing that naturally came to her mind was their relationship.
"You and Felix Finch... are you in a relationship?"
"No. What I want to ask is..." She briefly recounted the incident from a few days ago when her baby had almost fallen down the stairs. "...I just can’t think of any reason why he would harm my baby. Claire, his past with Theodore Grant..."
Felix Finch and Theodore Grant were childhood friends.
They grew up together, went to school together; their relationship should have been very good.
Did something happen between them that she didn’t know about?
She needed to get to the bottom of it.
This reminder made Claire Grant suddenly recall an incident from many years ago.
"Before... it’s true... Felix Finch once had a fiancée. She was a good friend of mine. A few days before the wedding, while pregnant, she jumped from a building and killed herself..."
Natalie Morgan was stunned.
She had never heard of this before.
Felix Finch had never mentioned it, and neither had Theodore Grant.
What kind of woman was she, and what must she have been feeling to do something so foolish?
"Was Theodore Grant... involved somehow?"
Many years had passed, and Claire Grant didn’t want to think about it anymore.
A look of heartache and desolation crossed her face.
"Her name was Rose Yeats. We were good friends. A few days before she jumped, she came to talk to me a few times. She was in great pain. She said she had seen an unbearable side of Felix Finch and couldn’t convince herself to accept a man like that. But she was pregnant and couldn’t bear to get rid of the child. She was completely lost."
"She said she loved him but couldn’t accept his debauchery. She suffered from insomnia night after night..."
In Claire Grant’s eyes, Felix Finch had something of a split personality.
On the surface, he was the heir to the Finch Family, a doctor with mysophobia, a young man with a bright future—gentle as jade, humble, and polite.
But...
Rose Yeats told her that Felix’s private life was incredibly wild.
He often hosted rooms full of men and women for naked parties, orgies, and even many other perverted games.
She was a normal woman; how could she possibly accept any of that?
She had tried reasoning with him, arguing, fighting, and cursing him out, but it was all useless. A dog can’t be taught not to eat shit.
Claire Grant sighed, unable to continue. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
Natalie Morgan could understand a woman’s despair.
Claire Grant picked up her cup, took a sip of water, and continued, "I advised her to look on the bright side, that all she had to do was not marry him. But she got stuck in her own head and ended up jumping. As she killed herself, she shouted, ’Theodore Grant, I love you!’ I guess that’s when Felix Finch started holding a grudge against Theodore."
Natalie Morgan found this strange.
Why would she randomly shout that she loved another man as she was dying?
Could it be...
"She and Theodore Grant..."
"Rose Yeats and Theodore weren’t very close. It’s not that I’m trying to defend Theodore, but as far as I know, there was nothing between them. I think a more reasonable explanation is that she was about to kill herself, and she was delirious and just spouting nonsense."
Natalie Morgan understood.
It was because of what Rose Yeats said that Felix Finch had branded Theodore Grant with his deep-seated hatred.
She seemed to have figured it out. Felix Finch had been biding his time for so many years just to make Theodore Grant experience the same pain he had.
And Momo was his first target.
What was even more terrifying was that this was likely just the beginning. Next, Felix Finch’s merciless gaze would probably turn to her.
At this thought, a chill ran down Natalie Morgan’s spine, seeping straight into her heart.
"It seems I need to find a safer, more private preschool for my baby. I can’t let Felix Finch get near him so easily. I can’t guarantee what he might do to harm him next time."
Claire Grant offered to help. "I have a friend who is in charge of an early childhood center. It’s a joint-venture preschool, so the security is very high. If you’d like, I can help you get in touch."
"That would be wonderful." As long as it was safe, she didn’t care about spending more money. "Claire, thank you."
"So you really don’t plan on telling Theodore the truth about the baby?"
