He Got Engaged to His First Love On the Day I Died-Chapter 9: Let Her Wait Outside
It was close to her home, so the commute would be easy.
The hiring manager watched Natalie Morgan’s impromptu drawing, nodding repeatedly. "Miss Morgan, your artistic skill is truly impressive. You certainly live up to your reputation as a top student from a prestigious art academy. We’re in desperate need of a teacher like you—one with solid fundamentals and first-rate talent."
"Thank you." Natalie Morgan felt a little embarrassed by the praise.
"How about this? You can start on Monday. The monthly salary is four thousand, with performance-based commissions. Our teachers here generally make over ten thousand a month."
The hiring manager’s eyes shone as he looked at Natalie Morgan.
Natalie Morgan was also thrilled. "Okay, I’ll be here on Monday."
The hiring manager excitedly grabbed Natalie Morgan’s hand. "It’s truly a rare find, a teacher as talented as you. You have no idea, but a while back, we had to hire this woman who got the job through connections... She’s a real piece of work. Now that you’re here, we can find an excuse to let her go."
Natalie Morgan was a bit taken aback.
She would feel guilty if her arrival caused another teacher to lose their job. "Is that... really okay?"
"Miss Morgan, don’t worry. We would have found a reason to fire her even if you hadn’t come, really..." The hiring manager shook his head. "...That teacher hasn’t even been to college. All she did was take a few art classes in high school. How can someone like that teach children? If she weren’t disabled, we would’ve..."
The manager shook his head frequently, his dissatisfaction obvious.
"So, Miss Morgan, we’ll be waiting for you on Monday. We can sign the contract then. We offer a full benefits package, so you don’t have to worry about a thing."
The salary wasn’t high, but she was content.
After reaching a verbal agreement with the manager, she politely took her leave. "Well, I’ll be heading back now."
"I’ll see you out."
Just as Natalie Morgan and the manager reached the entrance of the institute,
they saw Wanda Lynch.
She was getting out of Theodore Grant’s car, her white dress swaying in the breeze, her face glowing with blissful happiness.
The manager lowered his voice. "That’s the teacher I was talking about. Looks like she’s latched onto a sugar daddy. Why would she even need to work?"
’So it was her.’
Wanda Lynch saw Natalie Morgan and walked over, leaning on her crutch. "What a coincidence, Natalie. You’re here to..."
The manager, his expression calm, answered for her, "Miss Morgan is here to apply for the art teacher position."
"That’s wonderful! You can do it." Wanda Lynch offered an understanding smile and looked at the manager. "Natalie is a friend of mine. She’s a really good person. You have to give her a chance, okay?"
Natalie Morgan shot her a cool glance.
’I’m here for an interview, and she says I’m a good person. Heh.’
"I’ll be going now, Director."
"Goodbye, Miss Morgan." The manager waved happily.
As she passed Theodore Grant’s car, the man gunned the engine and sped off, the vehicle brushing past her pant leg.
Natalie Morgan had just gotten home
when she received a call from the institute’s manager. "I’m so sorry, Miss Morgan, but you can’t start work on Monday. We... hope you can find another job that you like."
"It’s fine."
She had expected this.
’How could Theodore Grant possibly let me take Wanda Lynch’s job?’
Even without Wanda Lynch in the picture, with a single word from him, no one in Riverden would dare to hire her.
She just hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly.
’Oh well. Finding a job was hard enough already. Time to look for the next one.’
She searched for a job for half a month straight, but still, no one would hire her.
She guessed Theodore Grant must have put the word out.
By now, she could accept it all calmly.
Natalie Morgan used the last of her money to buy an electric scooter. She planned to start working as a delivery driver to make ends meet.
Aside from her eight hours of sleep, she spent sixteen hours a day on the road, delivering food.
"Morgan, there’s an order for a villa in Grandeur Gardens today. They’re having a birthday party tonight and ordered over twenty thousand worth of dishes. The delivery fee is two thousand! Remember to come pick it up at 5 PM."
The person on the phone was the owner of a private kitchen.
In the month Natalie had been working as a delivery driver, the owner had taken good care of her, always saving the big, profitable orders for her.
"Okay, Lana, I’ll be there on time to pick it up."
This was the biggest order she’d gotten since she started delivering food.
For a cash-strapped Natalie Morgan, the two-thousand-yuan delivery fee was a godsend.
At five in the afternoon, Natalie Morgan picked up the carefully packed food from the restaurant.
"Lana, can you give me the contact’s phone number?"
The owner sent the phone number to Natalie Morgan’s phone and handed her a raincoat. "Morgan, the weather looks bad. It’ll probably start pouring soon. Ride carefully, and head straight home after the delivery."
"Got it, Lana."
Natalie Morgan put on her helmet and took the raincoat from the owner. "I’m heading out then, Lana."
"Be careful on the road."
"I will."
The Grandeur Gardens villas were on the outskirts of the city.
The distance was about ten miles.
On an electric scooter, the ride would take over an hour.
Halfway there, a light drizzle began to fall from the sky.
This was nothing to Natalie Morgan. In her month of delivering food, she had encountered all sorts of bad weather. It had gone from being an inconvenience to a habit. As long as she could earn money, she wasn’t afraid of anything.
By the time she reached the entrance of Grandeur Gardens, the rain was already coming down hard.
She called the contact person. "Hello, your food delivery is here. Could you send someone to come get it?"
"Oh, you’re the delivery driver? Just bring it inside. Villa 78."
"Oh, okay."
Natalie Morgan rode her scooter, weaving left and right until she finally found Villa 78.
Afraid the rain would soak the food, she took off her raincoat and draped it over the packed containers.
She called the contact person again. "Hello, I’m here. Can you come out and get the food?"
"Just a minute."
Inside the villa.
From the second-floor balcony, one could see the woman in the yellow vest standing outside the gate.
"Theodore, does that delivery driver... look like Natalie to you?"
The man standing next to Wanda Lynch immediately called out to the person who was going to get the food. "Tell her to wait outside."
"Yes, Mr. Grant."
Wanda Lynch gently shook Theodore Grant’s arm and looked worriedly at the woman standing in the rain outside. "Theodore, it’s raining out there. She’ll get soaked, won’t she?"
"Isn’t that what her job is?"
The man turned and walked back inside. After sitting down, he took out a cigarette and put it to his lips.
From where he sat, he had a clear view of Natalie Morgan’s miserable state.
Wanda Lynch shrugged and said no more. "Well, I’ll go check on how the fruit is being prepared."
The rain fell harder and harder.
When no one came to pick up the delivery, Natalie Morgan called the contact person again. "Hello, when is someone coming to get the food?"
"Sorry about that. Could you please wait a little longer? Everyone’s busy. Someone will be out to get it right away, right away."
"Please hurry. I’m worried the food will get ruined by the rain."
She tucked in the corners of the raincoat again, then took shelter from the rain under the eaves herself.
