Healing a Fallen S-Rank Beastman: Everyone Fights Over the Little Female-Chapter 66: Reporting
Ares’s arrival didn’t disrupt the atmosphere of the dinner party. In fact, with the addition of delicious food, the gathering went exceptionally smoothly.
Lu Huan sat there, watching Lu Xiao chatting happily with the four females who were much older than her, an unconscious look of envy in her eyes.
She couldn’t help but ask curiously, "Sister, what exactly is your job? I still don’t know."
Upon hearing this, the atmosphere at the dinner table stalled. Teacher Ai Li looked at Lu Xiao. "Dear, you haven’t told your family about your job?"
Lu Xiao maintained a natural smile, not at all embarrassed by Lu Huan’s question.
"That’s right, I haven’t mentioned it." ’It was never important. I don’t need to inform Lu Ge Wei about what I do, and for her part, Lu Ge Wei wouldn’t be bored enough to meddle in my affairs.’
’Besides, working at the Fifth Research Institute isn’t anything to be ashamed of.’
Hearing this, Teacher Sherry smiled at Lu Huan and said, "Your sister is amazing. She’s a full-time therapist at our Fifth Research Institute."
"The Fifth Research Institute... Isn’t that...?" Even if Lu Huan had no idea what a therapist did, she had heard of the Fifth Research Institute. ’Isn’t that where they perform Spiritual Soothing on the males sent to the shelters?’
’I heard those S-Class males are terrifying, like complete madmen.’
’How could Lu Xiao go to a place like that?’
Lu Huan’s eyes were wide with shock. She absolutely couldn’t believe that Lu Xiao actually worked at the Fifth Research Institute.
’Has my sister gone insane?’
Teacher Ai Li wasn’t surprised by Lu Huan’s shock. She even chuckled and teased, "See? Most people have that reaction when they hear we’re therapists from the Fifth Research Institute, as if our workplace is some kind of monster’s den. But how would they know that it’s actually very safe? Otherwise, how could we have worked there for so many years and still be perfectly fine? Little female, don’t be so prejudiced. Your sister is doing something very noble. She’s sure to shock the entire Empire one day."
Hearing such high praise from Teacher Ai Li, Lu Xiao couldn’t help but laugh. "Teacher Ai Li, you’re flattering me too much. Careful, or my head will get too big~"
"Go on and let it. You’ve earned the right."
Lu Huan sat there, her heart still reeling. Listening to Lu Xiao chat with the four women, she felt like she had never truly known her. No, their entire family had never truly known Lu Xiao.
She glanced at Ares, who was sitting beside them with a calm expression. He obviously knew what Lu Xiao did for work, too.
’And he didn’t even try to stop her?’
Lu Huan wondered uncertainly if she should mention this to Lu Ge Wei. But then again, she wasn’t sure if Lu Xiao would want Lu Ge Wei to know. ’If I mess this up, will Lu Xiao still come to my parent-teacher conference?’
With that in mind, Lu Huan decided it was best not to do anything that might test Lu Xiao’s limits. She would just pretend she didn’t know a thing.
The four teachers stayed at Lu Xiao’s place until evening before they left.
When they left, Lu Xiao and Ares personally saw the four of them to the door, watching until each had departed before going back inside.
Meanwhile, Lu Huan was already quietly clearing the dining table.
Seeing the two of them return, Lu Huan spoke very thoughtfully, "Sister, Brother-in-law, you two should rest. I can take care of the cleaning here."
Lu Xiao raised an eyebrow but didn’t do as Lu Huan said. Instead, she and Ares came over to help clean up.
Seeing Lu Xiao’s reaction, Lu Huan pressed her lips together but didn’t say anything more, simply helping them quietly.
That night, Ares investigated and found out what had been happening with Lu Huan at school recently.
Perhaps influenced by the incident with Noah, Lu Huan had indeed stopped going to places like bars ever since she and Lu Xiao parted ways. She had even had a falling out with her old friends because of it.
They said Lu Huan had wimped out and didn’t dare to go out and have fun anymore because she was threatened by Lu Xiao.
Lu Huan had a huge fight with them and proclaimed that she and Lu Xiao had a great relationship. They taunted her, saying that if her relationship with Lu Xiao was really so great, then she should get Lu Xiao to come to her parent-teacher conference.
Backed into a corner, Lu Huan had no choice but to agree.
Ares didn’t need to say what happened next; Lu Xiao already understood.
’So that was Lu Huan’s goal in coming over and trying to get on my good side.’
What did surprise Lu Xiao, however, was that Lu Huan actually seemed to be on a path to changing for the better.
Ares looked at Lu Xiao’s disbelieving expression. "Surprised?"
Lu Xiao didn’t hide her thoughts. "Very surprised. I thought Lu Huan was a lost cause, but I guess she can still be saved. Still, I don’t quite understand this change."
’Thinking back, it seems Lu Huan hasn’t been the same since we left the Earl Huai’an Mansion last time.’
’My gut tells me it was something that was said when she met Noah that day that caused her to change.’
’But for now, this change is a good thing. I just hope this isn’t just a whim on Lu Huan’s part.’
Lu Xiao decided that when she saw Lu Huan the next morning, she would ask her when the parent-teacher conference was.
’Since the kid wants to do better, a guardian naturally shouldn’t pass up such an opportunity.’
’Lu Xiao didn’t really have a savior complex, nor did she see herself as some kind of messiah. It was just that since she’d encountered the situation and could conveniently make a difference, she would.’
’If she hadn’t encountered it, she wouldn’t be bored enough to go around trying to change the world.’
The next day at the breakfast table, when Lu Huan heard Lu Xiao ask when the parent-teacher conference was, she became visibly excited. "It’s at the end of this month! Sister, are you going to go?"
"If I have time at the end of the month, I’ll go. Just send me the specific time and date." Since she had decided to go, Lu Xiao didn’t keep Lu Huan in suspense and gave her the reassurance she was looking for. "So, if there’s nothing else, you can head back to school."
Seeing that Lu Xiao had finally agreed, the great weight on Lu Huan’s heart was lifted. She nodded. "Okay, I’ll head back to school in a bit then. I won’t disturb you and Brother-in-law’s life here."
Lu Xiao raised an eyebrow at the beaming Lu Huan. ’She’s certainly getting a lot more comfortable calling us Sister and Brother-in-law.’
After breakfast, Lu Huan helped clear the table before leaving with a smile.
Watching her leave, Lu Xiao couldn’t help but think, ’It would be a very good thing if Lu Huan changes because of this, even just a little. Still—’
"Ares, I just remembered, I have to go to the S-Class Shelter tomorrow. It’s time to perform Spiritual Soothing for Dean. But don’t worry, Teacher Ai Li and Teacher Sherry will be with me this time, and they’ll be helping out. So you can focus on your own work without any worries."
She didn’t want Ares to worry about her because of the nature of her job.
But clearly, Ares didn’t think the same way. "I’m going with you. I can only be at ease if I see you with my own eyes. Lu Xiao, let me go."
Meeting Ares’s persistent gaze, Lu Xiao felt she couldn’t bring herself to refuse him coldly. "Alright. As long as it doesn’t interfere with your work."
