Chapter 31: The Kind of Mosquito They Have

Luellen rubbed her neck. "Uhm... I might just be exhausted from everything. Shopping with Mr Leander took years off my life with those prices. Shirley also pulled a stunt I couldn’t bring up again. Also..."

The maiden’s body tensed up. How should she make light of what almost happened between her and Leander? Should Luellen just stop talking? No, she already said it.

"Also what?" Summer came back with a rag. Luellen almost snatched it and wiped her floor. "Lue? Oh, no..."

Summer held Luellen’s shoulders and made the maiden look up at her. She gripped Luellen’s shoulders tighter. "Please tell me no one dared to... Did Mr Leander’s brother try something with you? That white dress was too tempting. Did someone walk in on you changing? Tell me... I will kill him!"

A laugh. Luellen responded with a mocking laugh, but it sounded like it was for the two of them. The maiden held her friend’s wrists. "Sue, no... it’s not... I just don’t understand why things are advancing this way. Do you know?"

Luellen smiled at her friend. "Mr Leander wants to sleep with me..."

It went without saying. Summer’s jaw dropped. She then patted Luellen’s shoulders again. "No, no, no! I do not know! Lue! Lue! Lue! Details! Gosh, I knew it!"

"I... I don’t know too much... I mean... It feels like a fever dream." Luellen laughed again. This time, she sounded like a deranged crone. She would only sway at the shakes Summer gave her. "How overwhelming could it get...?"

"Oh, Mrs Wentworth! Don’t hide details from me!" Summer laughed before hugging Luellen tighter. "Come back to earth! Hahaha!"

Buzz! The doorbell rang just long enough for it to punch through Luellen’s trance. The two women scooted in their spots on the living area’s floor. Summer quickly got up and went to the door.

She checked the peephole and chuckled in Luellen’s direction. "Hey, it’s our pizza guy! I was wondering when you’d turn up! Way past twenty minutes. It should be free!"

The guy snorted as Summer opened the door. August walked in and moved the pizza boxes out of Summer’s immediate reach. "It’s free because I bought it for Luellen. Get your mitts off her food."

Summer only laughed and closed the door. "Right...!"

August ditched his shoes before the elevated step. He didn’t even have to bend down; the shoes didn’t look orderly either. He walked to the living area and took the couch, not imposing on Luellen’s space on the floor.

His steely expression mellowed. "Hey, I saw something circulating the Internet. Not only your conglomerate had seen that sight. Sue said his employees thought that was Shirley Hower. It was you, though... right? Are you okay? Did anywhere hurt? No one took advantage of you, right?"

"I’m all good. Mr Leander took care of me." Luellen smiled. Her system made another prompt about considering August as a Love Interest. However, it rejected him again.

"Humph, that guy shouldn’t be bringing you to places and then leaving you alone. What if a creep made a move on you?" August sighed and opened the box. "Here, I brought you your favorite. Have a slice. You haven’t eaten dinner yet, right?"

"Thank you." Luellen scooted and received the pizza slice. She scooted again and ate the pizza in silence.

August stared at the back of Luellen’s head. He even squinted a lot, making Summer nudge him with her knee.

She brought a pitcher of juice and another glass to the center table. The friend glanced at Luellen before squinting at August instead. "So what if she wants to eat pizza with chocolate? Stop staring. You’re now the creep who might make a move on her."

The brother flinched and blushed a little. However, he didn’t forget to furrow his brows and growl at her. "What? I’m not going to do that! You think I’m an animal?"

He glanced at Luellen’s head again. "I just thought I saw something on her neck."

"Sheesh, you’re seeing things." Summer, however, took Luellen’s hair in her hand and spread the strands to cover more of Luellen’s nape. "There’s nothing there. What could be there? Gosh, what a closet pervert...!"

"Then why are you hiding her neck from me?" August huffed before leaning heavily against the couch. "What kind of mosquito does the Wentworths have in their house?"

Summer’s glare sharpened. More when she noticed how Luellen froze. She could only glare at August, who even reflected the same glare in his eyes. The sister huffed. "Well... one that is big enough to pay for a wife’s living expenses. They don’t give birth to those just as naturally these days."

August, instead of getting angry, only massaged his forehead. "Sue, I’m not Mom. Why do you keep defending your job against me? Also... isn’t Luellen working to pay for herself just the same? Why does a mosquito have to make a living for her?"

A smile curled Summer’s lips. "Why not? If he wants her, he has to work hard for it."

"Are we still talking about a real mosquito? Why am I sensing something different about this conversation?" August lifted a brow. "Are you projecting your weird fantasies on Luellen? Please don’t."

"Wait, you think I’m talking about a real mosquito?"

Luellen only stuck to her drink. She closed her eyes and smiled. Yes, loud noises like this were welcome. They distracted her from her thoughts.

...

The conglomerate slept for one night, but it still hadn’t forgotten the wild videos from yesterday. Everyone buzzed about the dark-haired maiden in Leander’s arms that time. However, since the style didn’t fit Luellen’s conservative look, no one overlaid the picture on her. Luellen just didn’t know how Shirley would cope with this.

Cope? That vile woman might even tell stories as if she was the girl who had a lemon slice on her hair.

No matter. Luellen only walked into their building without a worry. It was already Day 8, and the office would be swamped with the end-of-the-month matters. She might not even leave the office past 9 PM again.

"No, I’m telling you... there will be a wedding!"

Luellen caught words coming from another group. The elevator didn’t leave fast enough to avoid a few more ladies. They spoke in hushed voices, only glancing at the lone maiden in the corner. Luellen stepped deeper into the corner when the elevator opened again. It was best to get separated from those ladies who found her annoying.

It was just... a familiar person walked in and stood beside Luellen. She looked up at the woman, who was trying to juggle a handbag, a few folders, a coffee tray, and her phone in that small space she had for herself.

The maiden offered her two vacant hands with a smile. "I can hold something for you, Ms Curtis. Is it urgent?"
