Chapter 32: No Apologies

"Oh, Ms Piper?" Ms Curtis glanced at her and smiled back. She handed Luellen the folders and the coffee tray. "Sorry, Ken keeps texting me. Director has an early meeting today. It completely slipped out of my mind. Organizing a farewell party is surely taxing. Yeah, your office should have given you your invitation. Are you going?"

"Yes. Hopefully, we can get enough rest before the party." Luellen chuckled at the relieved face of Director Lawford’s second secretary. That woman manned the office while the first secretary tailed the director.

Ms Curtis nodded. "I know right. Everyone’s trying to maximize today’s workday. Tomorrow night, we should shine the brightest. Do you know? Mauve is..."

The chatter was soft, but in a jam-packed elevator, their words were strangely the only noise. The other passengers had quieted down as if listening.

No one in the conglomerate’s social butterflies hadn’t heard about that farewell party. They didn’t care too much about the real person leaving. However, parties like those invited even the highest of their top executives. Particularly, they knew CEO Leander Wentworth would be attending.

With the matter from yesterday, could he turn up with his rumored girlfriend?

Then again, no one knew which offices were involved in the conversation. They didn’t hear anything about Luellen’s office. Still, none would have guessed the truth.

...

Luellen didn’t have to walk Ms Curtis to their office. Ken, the first secretary, was waiting for her in the fifteen floor’s elevator lobby. The maiden only gave him Ms Curtis’s folders and coffee tray to him before saying goodbye.

The chatter in the higher floors sounded different. Luellen caught some employees glancing at her with knowing gazes. It made her speedwalk to their office.

"I’m really trying here...! No... Please help me...!"

Luellen heard Shirley whining from inside. The door was not even done closing on its own, so her voice traveled out. The maiden came to the door and saw Shirley trying to remove a lace front wig off her head. It was black and in the same length as the woman’s hair in the video. Summer was correct to assume Shirley would turn up with a wig.

Shirley’s face distorted from frustration and helplessness. However, she stopped and glared when Luellen walked inside the office. No one else was there, but those who had to arrive early.

"Oh, good morning, Ms Piper." Gala had initially walked to her desk. However, seeing the maiden made her walk back to Shirley’s side. Her smile could even make a baby cry.

"Good morning..." Luellen blinked. Shirley still tugged on the wig’s front lace, but she hid her face behind her hand. The maiden looked at the auntie trying to hide her niece. "She shouldn’t be pulling on it. She will rip her hair off."

Gala glanced behind her and saw the miserable niece. She smiled back at Luellen. "She can make do with it. She doesn’t need your help."

Luellen stared at them. Even if Leander didn’t press charges, he might have mentioned something to Gala. Otherwise, this auntie wouldn’t be punishing her niece. Then again, Luellen didn’t feel like standing there. Even if it was not the best thing to do, she brought her bag down on the couch. She walked to Shirley.

The maiden reached out her hand to the struggling vile woman. "Micellar water and cotton pad. I’ll help you get it off."

"She doesn’t..." Gala would insist, but Shirley quickly fished for those items inside her makeup bag. The niece even almost slapped the items on Luellen’s palm.

"I don’t think any of us will like to see her do that in front of Mr Leander." Luellen didn’t care about this auntie right now. She just thought of how pathetic Shirley looked. This woman was incapable of stealing her spot. Also, this woman shouldn’t make Leander scrunch his face from the sight.

Gala only huffed and sat on the edge of Shirley’s desk. She watched the two interns work on removing the wig. Luellen inevitably had to erase Shirley’s makeup, too. The niece wouldn’t stay still, causing the micellar water to drip on her face.

Madam Henny soon arrived, finding the three women at Shirley’s desk. When she looked over, she found Luellen applying top-tier makeup on Shirley’s face. The old woman’s eyes flickered. Did something happen?

"There. You said I ruined your makeup, so I fixed it. Don’t bother me about this anymore." Luellen sighed as she capped the lip gloss.

"Humph, I’ll probably retouch... Oh, wow...!" Shirley grabbed a mirror to comment on the look. However, her words got caught in her throat. She moved her face and stared at her reflection. A smile even threatened to curl her lips.

Luellen didn’t doubt the reaction. She didn’t realize that her stencil would activate when she was doing someone else’s makeup. Shirley even looked so stunning because of it. It didn’t matter. Luellen would just put down the lip gloss she held. Whether Leander complimented the makeup or not, at least it was her handiwork.

The maiden turned and found Madam Henny. She smiled at the old woman. "Good morning, Madam. I’m about to clean the inner office."

"You do that, please." Madam Henny glanced at Shirley... and that black wig on the side. "Leander’s almost here."

Perhaps no one had to ask what was happening. Madam Henny caught whiff of the same video everyone had. She also figured it was Luellen instead. Then again, Leander kept allowing everyone to slap Shirley’s name on everything.

...

Luellen had just finished polishing the window sill when Leander opened the inner office’s door. She turned to greet him and Houston. However, the first secretary just left a coffee tray and a few more documents inside. When the door closed, the two people remained quiet.

The maiden waited for Leander to speak, but the CEO only walked to his desk and put down his briefcase. He then looked at Luellen, who followed every move he made.

"...is it better if I apologize?" That was all he said.

"If you didn’t mean it to happen, I would take the apology, Mr Leander." Luellen kept her smile on her lips. She also waved her hands. "I knew it couldn’t be serious at all. It might just be from the heat of the moment..."

Leander hummed. He then sat down and attended to his computer. He didn’t even say anything more for Luellen to decipher.

The maiden’s eyes flickered. She could only pick up the files Houston brought and reviewed it briefly. She walked up to Leander’s desk and put the files on the side neatly. "Mr Leander, these are for approval for next month. Should I keep it here, or would you like to attend to them after more urgent documents?"

"I’ll look at them after these." Leander picked up his coffee cup and sipped on it. "Borrow the phone on Houston’s desk. Call Purchases for my expedited order."

"I’m on it." Luellen bowed slightly and walked off to leave. However, before she could open the door, she heard Leander speak.

"You told me to apologize if I didn’t mean it." He gazed at her. "So I won’t."
