Chapter 35: Minor Things

To think about it, it was strange for Beckett’s room to be downstairs, among the three guest rooms. Then again, that was not the most important part of their conversation.

Luellen waved her hands to decline. "Uh, Mr Beckett, I was only here for around four nights. They’re even consecutive! I don’t think I should get a room because of that."

The younger brother’s smile deepened. "Really? Andy can’t sneak into your room anymore if you don’t. That’s sad."

"Huh? W-Why would he do that?" Luellen flinched, trying not to expose herself.

Leander, who also sat at a barstool, glanced at Beckett. He ate slowly. "Stop making things weird for her, Beck.

"Also, you weren’t demoted. You didn’t keep your room on the second floor because you tumbled down the stairs in my absence." Leander huffed, stabbing his food with a fork. "Three times. I had to come home to you like you were a dead body. It was just six in the morning."

"I still hit the walls, so I don’t think there’s much of a difference!" Beckett laughed as if teasing his older brother. However, he could only freeze his smile when Leander glared at him for real.

Luellen’s eyes flickered. She thought Leander only grew paranoid because of what happened to his parents. She seemed to be wrong. Leander had plenty of reasons to worry that Beckett might end up dead one day. That man was too hazardous. She wondered if Leander would end up baby-proofing the house soon.

Her hand flew to her mouth to hide her laugh. She figured Leander had more guests than his secretaries. What would they think if they realized Leander’s house was baby-proofed? Would they assume Leander hid a child from the world?

The CEO glanced at Luellen, whose shoulders were shaking. "What do you find funny, Ms Piper? Look at what you’ve done, Beck."

"Hey, you’re the one doing all the crazy talking." Beck lied and stuck his tongue out. He then turned to the maiden. "Luellen, come with me later. Let’s shop!"

"I can’t, Mr Beckett. I have to go to work."

"Humph, you’re laughing at me in secret?" Leander clicked his tongue and leaned against his chair. "Go and shop with him. I expect you to be in the office in the afternoon instead. That guy might end up in a ditch again. Watch him for me."

Beckett only laughed and shook his head. He leaned his elbows on the kitchen island and smiled at Luellen. "Let’s find a good recipe to cook before you go to work."

...

Heavy clicks echoed in the noontime lobby of Wentworth Towers. Every gaze darted to the person who walked in at that time. Not only did she wear a company badge, but she also carried a big tote bag. The maiden casually walked up to the elevators, ignoring the scorching gaze on her body.

One receptionist chased the maiden to the elevator lobby. She grabbed Luellen’s shoulder and forced a smile. "Miss! I’m sorry! I can’t allow you to bring those things up without an inspection."

"Uhm, the guard has already inspected it." Luellen gasped softly. She protected the tote bag from shaking too much. "Wait, let me open it for you if you like."

"No, we should do the inspection in a more secure spot!" The receptionist gripped the tote bag’s strap tightly. "Please subject yourself to the company policies!"

Luellen didn’t understand what was happening. Wasn’t this too desperate? The last time, she brought a full bag of groceries without intervention. Was it because she walked with Beckett by then?

The maiden didn’t fight the pull and walked back with the receptionist. She watched the thin woman drag her in six-inch heels. Of course, she couldn’t deny the pain on the receptionist’s face. The bag was too heavy. Even Luellen couldn’t bring it around in heels without her Proficiency Skill [Numbing Heels].

"What... is in this?" The receptionist tried to carry the bag onto the back corner of their reception desk. However, she struggled to lift it because of her poor posture.

"Pantry supplies. Mr Wentworth wants to keep the pantry stocked for the office. Constant lunch-outs are affecting our rendered hours, he said." Luellen helped her bring the bag up. "I’m already running late. Mr Wentworth’s food is growing cold."

The receptionist stared at the pretty office lady before her. Luellen’s attire was already passable, but it couldn’t compete with Gala’s and Shirley’s visuals. Not to mention that the maiden would normally hide beneath cardigans and long sleeves. The receptionist squinted at Luellen and huffed.

She stood properly and flipped her disheveled fringe back. "Mr Wentworth’s food? What are you talking about? Don’t use words that you cannot back up."

She glanced inside the bag and grabbed the packed lunch. "Oh, wow, is this the lunch you are talking about? Oh, my, it is hot!"

Luellen didn’t know where the hostility was coming from. However, her entire body shook when the receptionist grabbed the packed lunch... and tossed it to the floor. Luellen would dive to save it, but she was balancing the heavy tote bag on the counter. If she let go, she might as well lose everything she bought before coming here.

The crisp breaking sound of the expensive food box echoed in the lobby. The receptionist hid a smile, while Luellen could only watch it without emotion.

[Loathing detected! You have earned 5 black heart/s!]

’Wow, it grew in number so much. Was it because I held back in cursing Shirley and her aunt? Just because Mr Leander kept saving me didn’t mean things like this would stop. This is already because I say minor things. What more if I talk about how Mr Leander seems interested in me...?’

Luellen’s mind flew as she stared at the mess on the floor. Her hard work lay unmoving in the middle. The receptionist even huffed and puffed as if she did the world a favor. No words even came through as Luellen chose not to listen.

Things only changed when Luellen saw a man stop in front of it. He carefully picked up the box, hoping not to spill more. Luellen looked up and found Mr Ken staring.

"Mr Ken?" Luellen whispered his name, but the receptionists’ greeting overrode her soft sound.

"Good afternoon, Director Lawford!" The three receptionists bowed and greeted the old man. They only glanced at the maiden at the side. The one who stopped Luellen forced a smile. "Please put that down, Mr Kenwood. Let Utility deal with the mess. Uhm, are you going out for lunch? I’m so sorry for the sight."

"We are, but I’m wondering why there is a food box on the floor." Director Lawford chuckled, walking closer to Luellen. He then turned to her. "Ms Piper, why are you staying in the lobby? Did Leander ask you to buy food?"
