Hearts System: 1000 Ways to Tell CEO I Love You-Chapter 41: Rest Well, Leander
The group waited outside the private ward. Luellen saw Leander leaning on the wall, eyes on the floor. It was as if his soul had left his body. Gala hugged his arm and stroked his head as if hushing him. Shirley sat on the bench, fiddling with her thumbs. Houston was steps away, busy with his phone call.
"Mr Wentworth, your wife is here!" The second nurse called out. Luellen didn’t know if the nurse was exacting vengeance. However, her voice surely attracted Gala’s ridiculing laugh.
"Wife? Aren’t you the most ambitious?" Gala huffed and glared at the nurse. "Why is she here? Didn’t I tell you someone will—?"
Luellen ran past the second nurse and got to the window. She couldn’t see anything even from the gap between the curtains. She then turned to Leander, who brought his eyes up at her. The maiden walked up to him.
She reached out to collect his other hand. "Hey... why don’t you sit down? How long have they been resuscitating him?"
"Just a few minutes..." Leander closed his eyes and squeezed Luellen’s hand. "He was supposed to be all right... but he crashed. He didn’t even crash the last time..."
"I’m sorry. His wound must have gotten worse." Luellen stepped closer and only held his hand. "You should sit down. If you fall, I will have to carry you. I’m not that strong."
Leander pulled a corner of his lips. "You pulled Beck out of the water. You’re stronger than me..."
He opened his eyes and moved to sit on the bench. "Where’s Henny? Shouldn’t you be together?"
"She’s at the vet." Luellen glanced at Shirley, who fled the bench in an instant. "Sydney’s condition isn’t as bad, but she needs to be monitored. We can’t bring her to the hospital, either. Leander, why don’t you sleep for now? You’d need strength to watch over Beckett..."
"I don’t want to go to sleep..."
That was what he said, but Leander leaned against Luellen. She only stood before him, so his head rested against her tummy. His hand relaxed and fell, but his fingers were still tightly laced around Luellen’s.
The second nurse watched the scene with a horrified face. She saw Leander ignore the beautiful woman in favor of this maiden. He even held onto her tightly, unlike the limp fingers on Gala. She cleared her throat and looked at Gala, who was as horrified as she once was.
"I’m sorry, but I might have to ask you to leave, miss." The second nurse glared. "Strangers are not allowed to be near the patients at this time. Please wait in the lobby."
"But... she’s not...! They’re not...!" Gala gasped and lost her composure. She wanted to push Luellen away, but that meant making Leander fall to the floor. She stomped her high heel broken before walking away. She grabbed Shirley’s arm and dragged her niece behind her.
Luellen only watched the nurse leave with the unwanted people. She wanted to confront Shirley, but Leander’s well-being was more important. It was all right. She had time.
The maiden ended up sitting down slowly. She guided Leander to lie down and use her lap as a pillow.
She waited until the doctor left the room. He walked up to them and glanced at the sleeping man. He said, "Uhm... are you... family?"
"Yes." Luellen lied for the third time.
"Mr Wentworth’s condition is stable again, but his wound has gotten worse. The pressure of the compression undid the stitches and caused a hematoma." The doctor shook his head. "I’m not saying no one should have performed CPR on him. However, his body barely recovered from his last accident. He might not make it this time."
"Is there no chance for him to recover?" Luellen’s gaze lowered and darkened. "No chance for miracles?"
The doctor shook his head. "His body has gotten too weak. He’s already strong for lasting this long. I’m sorry, Mrs Wentworth. Please prepare for the worst."
Luellen nodded. She then watched everyone else leave. Her gaze moved to the room where Beckett was.
"What should we do?" Houston asked after walking up to her. "I don’t think Leander will fault you for saving him. Still, his wounds have worsened. Whether you saved him or not, Leander was bound to lose Mr Beckett. What should we tell him?"
"Keep him company for a bit..." Luellen supported Leander’s head when she got off the bench. She then entered the room, looking at the poor numbers on the machine’s screen. The maiden sat on the bed and caressed Beckett’s face.
She closed her eyes and opened the Hearts Shop. A bitter smile curled her lips.
’System, can I curse myself and give life to Mr Beckett? I don’t want Mr Leander to feel as helpless as I was before. He can’t lose his brother. Mr Beckett’s the only one he has now...’
[Pro tip! You can combine items from two shops! You have unused Red and Blue Hearts!]
Luellen flinched and checked the shops the system mentioned. Her body trembled upon seeing a special healing spray in the Red Hearts shop. It was more powerful, but it must consume a great deal of vitality. What made it strange was that... it was a Leander-exclusive item.
’Does the system cater to what happens to me in real time?’
Luellen checked the Blue Hearts shop next. The tonics offered were meant to make her stronger in various ways. However, one tonic could rejuvenate her body and cure all her afflictions.
In an instant, she connected the two items. She bought the special spray and the tonic. Even when she was quick to heal herself, Luellen still caught herself coughing up blood on her palm.
’Thanks, System...’
Luellen discreetly applied the spray directly on Beckett’s abdomen. She even noticed the visible changes in his body. The system was too powerful, but the items were indeed expensive. In a short while, she spent 20 Red Hearts and 5 Blue Hearts.
"Don’t worry, Mr Beckett..." Luellen patted the man’s face. "I won’t let you do this to Mr Leander by accident..."
She got off the bed and smiled at the man outside. Luellen made her way back to the bench. "Are we going to let him sleep here longer?"
Houston shook his head. "Mr Beckett’s room has a couch. I will carry Leander to it. Why don’t you fetch water and food from the vending machine downstairs, Ms Piper? In case Leander wakes up."
Luellen cupped her cheeks. "Can I decline? What will I do if Gala and Shirley are in the hospital? Won’t they throw me out?"
"Right... I forgot about them." Houston sighed and only pushed his glasses up. "Help me carry Leander. I’ll do the food run instead."
"I’m so sorry..."
After they put Leander on the couch, Houston left to get food. Luellen only combed her hand through Leander’s hair to make it more presentable. It was just that... she stared at his face for too long. She even had an urge to kiss him.
Luellen only smiled and pressed her lips on Leander’s forehead. "Rest well, Leander..."
"Not right now..."
