Chapter 56: Beyond Corporate Greed

Ed and Carter pulled into the Z1 ranch and parked in front of the main house. As Carter opened his door, he was greeted by a young genman who was playing out front. The young man walked over toward the car and whistled.

"Damn, you talk about a slick car," he said admiringly.

Carter looked at the young man. "Did they allow that kind of talk here?"

Willie’s expression changed immediately. "No sir, I’m sorry sir. I should have not said that. Please don’t tell grandfather Zach—he will skin me alive."

"Your secret’s safe with me," Carter smiled. "You think we could visit your grandfather? We’ve got a lot to talk about. We want to try to help."

"Sure, go to the main house right to the front door. Knock on it, tell Jarvis Willie sent you and you need to talk to grandfather."

Ed and Carter walked to the main door and knocked. A very sharp-dressed young man opened the door.

"Good day, how can I help you sirs?" the young man asked politely.

"My name is Ed Hawthorne and this is my partner Carter. We’re here to talk to Mr. Zach," Ed explained. "Willie said to say he sent us."

Jarvis showed them into the main drawing room and had them take a seat while he went to speak to Mr. Zach.

Jarvis knocked on the office door.

"Come on in, door’s open," Zach called out.

"There are two young men to see you. Their names are Ed and Carter Hawthorne, and they’re waiting out front," Jarvis announced. "Ed’s human, Carter’s genman all the way—pure blood. He thinks he can hide what he is under all that human perfume he wears, but he’s still genman, and I can tell for sure that human has been all over him and in him for years."

"That’s fine, they’re good people," Zach said thoughtfully. "Didn’t know Carter was genman, never met him, but that might explain some of Ed’s contributions and charities. Show them in—I want to see what they’re all about and why they need to talk to me."

Zach pushed a button and Ty answered.

"Come to my office. I want you to be a witness to a meeting. Don’t say nothing, just witness, please."

"Yes, grandfather, I’m on my way."

Ty entered from the side room and was waiting in the office when Jarvis showed Ed and Carter in.

"Thank you for coming by for a visit," Zach said, showing them to their seats. "So, Ed, Carter, how can I help you two?"

"Mr. Zach, I know the Z1 ranch is only 5000 acres and there’s a lot of houses that have to be built to accommodate all of the misfits thanks to the big corporations and what they’ve done, and I want to help," Ed began earnestly. "I own the land next door to you—it’s in Carter’s name. CH Enterprises is the cover name for it due to tax regulations. I made a one-time gift to my lifetime partner. There’s 25,000 acres there I want to develop. I want to help these unfortunate souls."

He continued with growing passion. "I have construction crews at my beck and call. I have 750 temporary housing units that I can have moved in here within three days. Each unit has a bathroom and two sleeping areas—it will accommodate a lot until more permanent housing can be built. I can build a hospital here and a school so that none of these young genman will ever, ever do without."

Zach thought for a minute. "And what’s in it for you? Why now?"

Carter cleared his throat. "It’s because of me. I met Ed in the streets of the city. I had just turned 16, he was 21. I offered myself to him as a sexual service for a hot meal and a place to stay. He took me in and cleaned me up, educated me. When I transitioned, then we made love for the first time—he wouldn’t touch me before then and I was not allowed to touch him."

His voice grew heavy with emotion. "I want to make sure that these young genman never ever have to offer themselves up to anyone and trade their virtues for a meal. They may not be as lucky as I was."

"When I was on the streets for a year, I watched a good friend of mine—his name was JoJo. He let himself be taken, and the man finished off inside," Carter continued, his voice breaking. "I watched him swell, I watched him get big. I watched him trying to birth on the street by a dumpster. He and the child both perished—he was too small to have any child, much less that big man’s child."

"Nothing should ever happen like this. They need a place, they need proper care," he said firmly. "I know the Z1 ranch can do a lot, but together we can do a lot more. You will become a stakeholder in E.C. Hawthorne Ranch."

"Carter, you don’t know the half of it," Zach looked at him gravely. "We have 2250 genman that are between the ages of 16 and 18 pre-transition that are expecting children themselves. The corporate underground has found a way to give Genconmide to pre-transition genman and they are able to conceive a child. We have 2250 infants, 2250 adolescents, and along with that we have another 270 young genman that were brought up in the program and when they turned 18 and transitioned, they were made to breed the other younger genman."

"It is a mess, one caused by greed," he continued. "Think about it—2250 genman leave out of the program every year. A few are used as breeders for future generations, the others we don’t know what became of them. We do know what happened to the ones that didn’t make it through the birthing process—we found the incinerators."

Carter sat there, put his head down and started to cry. "This is not fair. I made it out, I ran away and I found fortune with the kind human who loves me. These kids didn’t have a chance, did they, Mr. Zach?"

"No, they didn’t. Until now they were a product of corporate greed, but we have a chance to rectify the situation and do something positive."

Zach looked up and saw his grandson Ty. "I’ll have my grandson here look over the property next door and see what resources are available. If you two are really committed to the project, we can make it work, but I’m not going to do it by myself—I can’t. We’re going to have to work together as partners and we will need contracts."

"Name it, it’ll be done—contracts, everything," Ed cleared his throat. "There’s no negotiations. It’ll be simple—you will have equal say in how the 25,000 acres next door will be developed. I will build a new home over there for Carter and myself and our family when we have it, but we need to get with your construction manager and just go over the fine details."

"I can have, in one phone call, the 750 units here within hours," Ed continued with enthusiasm. "I can tell my routing manager that I want all units ready to go within the next hour and they will be en route. I own a solar power company—we will build our grid here. It’ll supply both ranches. And as for security, I’ve got top-notch, second to none."

"We need to grow a lot of our own foods because it’s going to get expensive," he went on. "I own one of the top genetics companies. Anything there was on earth, we have the gene—we can create it in the lab. We have milk from cows, we have pork from pigs, we have eggs from chickens. All of them can be done in our labs, grown to a certain point, then brought out here and put into production right here. There are no problems with our genetics at all—they’re all safe, they’re all done responsibly, there are no mistakes."

"We need new ground transportation here," Ed added. "I own the solar buggy company. I saw one of the older versions out in front and that is a nice one, but just wait—I’ve got a better one in production for you right now, right off the drawing board. Makes that one look like a creeper. If you want to go for it, let me know."

"Will this do for a start?" Zach extended his hand. The two men shook hands.

"Young man, we have a special guest out here right now and I think you might want to meet her," Zach smiled at Carter. "She’s tired right now, but I think if we make the visit short, she would like to hear what you two have planned."

"We need to go back to my construction manager’s home. He’s just recovering from his latest birth, but he’s gonna be all over this," Zach explained. "His second in charge Robbie will be all over this as well. Roy who works in the office and their newest addition Frankie—young but a go-getter and very eager to prove himself. He’s learning, he’s getting more education as the days go by. He cannot walk by a book without picking it up and reading it. They will be available to go."

"This Frankie sounds like Carter a few years back," Ed chuckled.

"And I still read every time I get a chance now," Carter smiled.

The meeting was interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Come on in," Zach remarked.
